What do you miss about TNG?

It's a pretty basic question but what do you miss the most about TNG? Was it the stories, the characters, the concept, etc?


For me I enjoyed the concept of TNG. Explorers working to "better" themselves and also actively involved in helping others. I found the personal relationships on the ship to be interesting.

But for what I miss the most, really, is the artwork. The ships, the planets, the costumes. I loved in particular seeing the Enterprise E on screen. There is nothing like seeing that ship on a huge ass screen in all it's wonderfulness (is that even a word?)

For me it's mainly the characters. Which is why I still find enjoyment from watching movies like Insurrection or Nemesis. Even if the stories suck, it's still fun watching these guys interact and do their thing one more time.

Voyager was cool, at least it wasn't horrible. Now if we could have got 7 more years of TNG or DS9 instead of Enterprise I would have been happy. What a way to end the Trek franchise, with that crap. I'll never forgive that. NEVER!

I miss being able to see innovative and entertaining episodes. I liked the feeling of every Saturday at 6 gathering around the TV with my little brother and dad and watching the Enterprise puzzle out some problem. Didn't often use violence, and the characters were people I cared about.

I suppose "everything" isn't really an answer, but...everything!

As much as I like DS9, to me, TNG is the definitive Trek. It's "My" Trek. As others have said, the exploration nature of it, the cast were great, the stories were 90% excellent, the pacing, the effort and care everyone involved - from Berman down to the tea boy - seemed to have put into making it as good as it could possibly be...

I think people have also forgotten just how popular TNG was. It was the most mainstream Trek ever got, and I miss that about it as well. People I would never have dreamed of liking sci-fi or other Trek, just enjoyed TNG; merchandise was everywhere, probably reaching its peak in 1994/95 with Generations.

I just miss seeing their adventures every week.

The cast had great chemistry and really made you believe this was a group of people who liked their work and each other. Watching them work through new problems and challenges every week on that great ship of theirs was always entertaining for me.

I miss the Enterprise. To me is was the greatest of all known Enterprises. Too bad the series never lived up to its potential.

I miss the character interactions. I continually looked forward, each week, to see what 'these guys' would be up against next. Sure, there were some clunkers in there, but on the whole it was seven years of great story telling and character interactions.

the open-ness of the stories. DS9 was limited by its setting and format, as was Voyager. ENT was limited by its timeframe and need to preserve continuity. TNG, like TOS, was the most open of the Trek series, in the sense that the stories could be about almost anything.

Agreed. They were just a lot of fun to hang out with.

DS9 may have had the better storytelling, and the more developed characters, but it just wasn't nearly as warm and inviting a place as TNG was.

Maybe this has more to do with where it took place and it being a 90s show (When Star Trek was at it's high point) but I just miss that era. I miss the 24th century and want to go back there. As for the series, I thought TNG had the best cast with the best actor in the lead role. They were all very likable.

I'm honestly not sure what the fascination is with going back to Kirk and Spock and maybe bringing Khan back. I would much rather go back to the 24th century and have a movie based after the Dominion War, but that's not going to happen.

TNG is comfort TV, similar to something like Friends. The cast have a warm & pleasant on-screen interaction that's very easy to watch. Not many shows do that these days; there's more focus on inter-character tension or complicated ongoing plotlines.

There's a lot to be said for having a warm, fuzzy and satisfied feeling after watching a show.

Yeah, I know the writers were constantly frustrated at the lack of internal conflict among the main characters, but in retrospect I think Gene was right to downplay that for this series.

Not only did it strongly reinforce that "family" feeling, but it really did make the characters seem like they were from a more evolved 24th Century. And it made the show stand out among all the OTHER dramas and scifi shows where the characters constantly bicker and get on each other's nerves.
