Well, if they can't do more Harry Potters they can always start up a TIM HUNTER/BOOKS OF MAGIC series. All they need to do is intro Tim's friends Harmony and Don.

I do wonder why there are not more film franchises that go the James Bond route and just continue making sequels without bothering too much about what came before. I'd think comic films would be perfectly suited for that (especially the more famous heroes, where everyone knows the backstory anyway).
Finding out that the whole series was getting yet another bloody reboot after this film killed any anticipation for me. It'll all be superseded again. Bats 4 could have easily started to tie in to the rest of the DC Universe...
And the next Superman movie should have been Superman VI with Brandon Routh.

Actually Superman IV considering Singer's movie was ignoring Superman III and IV and just continuing the Donner movies ("counting" Superman II as a Donner movie.) And it's too soon to say the next Batman movie will be a complete "reboot" sure it'll have a new director, cast and such but we don't know yet if it'll completely ignore the events of the Nolan movies.
The Bond films tend to follow a continuity now because less people would be forgiving with the forgetting a previous films.
Though it clearly references, in some form, certain events from Superman II, Singer's film doesn't match up with other elements from the earlier film. It seems as though it follows what we might call an "alternate" version of Superman II. It does match up more closely with the original film, however.
Superman Returns is loosly based on the Christopher Reeve films and uses them as a vague backstory. It's not supposed to be a sequel to II that ignores III and IV. That's just what circulates among fandom.
Er, actually the film gives that impression itself. It treats the movie as a sequel that picks up five years after the events of Superman II, with Luthor having gone to trial and knowing about the Fortress, the kid as a result of Clark and Lois's relationship, etc. It's hardly something that "fandom" pulled out of their collective asses.
^ Singer himself has called the Reeve movies "a vague backstory" and someone else involved with the production, can't remember who, also said the same thing. It's kind of it's own thing, but it borrows a lot from the Reeve movies. A lot of fans have a penchant for wanting things ignored if they don't like them, so as I see it, the belief that Returns is a sequel to the second movie and ignores III and IV is wishful thinking that just happens to fit.
Why would have there needed to be any references to III and IV in SR? Usually sequels don't reference the plots to previous films. The Bond films almost never mention the earlier films. Even those with the same actor.
^ It's not simply that there's no reference to them. The main reason why SR is difficult to see as a sequel to III or IV is that Clark's mother had died in either III or IV but was still alive in Returns.
Oh that's not true - it may have been a bit light on action and excitement, but the character pieces were great, the cast were excellent and it looked good too. Rouths take on the Reeve part was superb...
But her death got only got a minor mention as being off camera. After Clark left the farm she is never seen again. She never appeared in II either. She had no role in his life after the first film so her absence, whether not explained or killed off camera, had no affect on the events of actual plot lines.
SR is often criticized for being too tied into Donner's films. But Martha Kent appearing was bridging the old films to the post Crisis comics. Where she was very much alive. Not just a throwaway reference, that he needs part of his pay checks sent to her or that she dies off camera. No that Clark is still close to her after he became Superman.
That is exactly what it is though. The use of "vague" and "loosely" just mean you don't have to have seen those movies to understand the plot.
I can't wait for July 17. Hans has outdone himself this time. Gotham's Reckoning is probably my favorite track so far. As JacksonArcher pointed out in a discussion on his facebook page, it sounds like music from the prologue.

It was slow and boring, and Luthor's "plot" was a rehash from the first Superman movie. It's mostly two hours of Superman brooding.
