Gods of Night

Ezri D

Lieutenant

I really do not read sci-fi books science I was a teenager. Since I am a member of this community. I have thought of reading the book "Gods of Night." I got it yeasterday and I read the whole book. Have to say, with the cover having Captain Ezri Dax, I was really not that impressed with her as a character. With Ezri Dax being the cover girl, I felt she had a very limited role.

The story line is fine, a bit anti-fan with so many characters being killed. Like Admiral Paris being killed, and Admiral Janeway being dead before the book started. Not happy with the talk of having Troi have a abortion against her will.

But, like a car accident you just cannot put look away. In time I will get the other two books and find problems with them as well. Any ideas?

You definitely need to read the other 2. You should have just picked up the Omnibus so you could have all 3. Also, Ezri continues to be developed in Zero Sum Game. I absolutely loved Ezri in Zero Sum Game.

As for so many characters being killed, it's a massive Borg invasion, of course there are massive casualties involving known characters which which impact main characters! As to Troi's possible abortion, keep reading, happy ending.

Wow, David, I bet that made your day. If you like a pick-me-up, just know that it was your trilogy/Typhon Pact that got me back to TrekLit after 10 years away.

It was Destiny that got me back into trek lit as well.

The fact that is was reprinted in Omnibus form shows this one critical opinion is far from the norm.

Imagine watching Star Wars Episode I and then judging the prequels without watching II and III. Wait, wait. . . maybe not the best illustration.

True, I plan to get the Zero Sum Game as well as the other two books.

Gee, thanks for approaching the work with an open mind.

Instead of finding problems, how about you enjoy the books? ;)

Seriously, though, keep reading those books. You've just finished book one and the adventure only gets better with each chapter of books 2 and 3!

Did enjoy the book, if I did not I would not get the other two and the Zero Sum Game. Still, the book would make some fans unhappy. Admiral Janeway being dead, Admiral Paris being killed and his son that had his wife and daughter leave him. Talking about Troi needs to have a abortion as she pose a problem to the ship.

Same here - although, ironically, now that I've caught up I like some of your other Trek stuff more !

Well, that already happened in a TNG novel, "Before Dishonor" and was highlighted and reflected upon in a much-praised VOY novel, "Full Circle".

Admiral Paris being killed and his son that had his wife and daughter leave him.
Tom Paris and B'Elanna's story dates back to the VOY Relaunch as well.

Talking about Troi needs to have a abortion as she pose a problem to the ship.
Star Trek has always discussed real world, controversial issues in the context of an unfolding adventure.

So, did she actually have one, or are you offended that the issue was simply being debated?

Sigh. 2/3 of your problem with Destiny were written about by other others before Destiny! And the abortion thing - controversial topics shouldn't be discussed in Trek lit? Geez, how did you manage to finish most of the episodes? And you don't even know what happens with the abortion.

The frustrating thing for me reading these comments is that Troi's story was not fundamentally about abortion; it was about the emotional trauma of miscarriage on both the mother and the father, a subject I researched quite thoroughly before I started writing the story arc.

^For that we thank you, David. That's something that is usually treated wrong in fiction. If it's never happened to you, you can't truly know it, but like a lot of life experiences, authors must do their best to approximate how their characters would feel. It's appreciated.

C'mon, try to read Mere Mortals and not be moved by Erika Hernandez' story arc. Try to read Chapter 9 and not be moved to tears. That is beautiful writing.

(even if I got the chapter number wrong)

Agreed David. I thought your entire arc on the story was compelling, emotional, handled very maturely, and so on. Having been around situations involving miscarriage as a necessity for the mother's health, it was an important read. I don't understand the OP's constant referencing it as a problem.
