Mad Men, Season 5. General Discussion Thread (spoilers welcome)

Oh, I know. Just a joke. Obviously his script was never used for the show. But maybe in couple years he got it someone on the show and elements of it popped up in actual episodes...

Seriously though I think there were a lot of details on this fictional script's cover, including a made up title. A freeze frame of it would make it clearer to read.

Megan could have stopped stop Don in his tracks when he got his dig in on her by saying, "Didn't you tell me I should do this?", which, in fact, he did.

The Negron Complex

Yeah, as Harry explained to Peggy in the episode, it was about an alien race called "the Negrons" (portrayed by white actors) who were enslaved by another race called "the Caucasons" or something (portrayed by black actors).

If you ask me, sounds more like a 3rd season script. :p It even has shades of "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" (maybe Paul's script was later reworked into LTBYLB?).

The Negrons! Who are white! "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" was actually reworked from something that was rejected earlier... The "Negrons" sounds just as bad as the "Yangs" and the "Coms" from "The Omega Glory".

Paul was always portrayed as mediocre, so I'm a bit surprised about his spiral downward.

He was a huge fan of The Twilight Zone as mentioned in an early episode of the first season. At that point, I knew Paul would be a future Star Trek fan.

I thought he'd be a long-haired hippie, not a shaved-headed Buddhist. There's still a chance for the former to happen now that he's in California. I bet he moves into a commune after he gets nowhere as a screenwriter.

Last week: There was some real irony when Betty wondered about why the harpooned whale would be smiling in Bobby's photo. At the end of the episode, Betty, who couldn't barely conceal her jealousy of Megan (and Don) said she was thankful that no one has it better than her. She was the "harpooned whale" who was smiling.

It's possible Don and Betty might try to hook up with each other agan but I don't think it's happening in this season. I'd be very surprised.

Back to this week: With the way things are going, I think Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce will be changing its name for sure.

I'm glad they're not going for the obvious Roger/Joan pairing, at least from what I can tell. She can do better. She should do better. She can even do it on her own.

Anyone know what the actress's name was who played "Mother Lakshmi"? My googling was unsuccessul, and I want to know because she's gorgeous. ;)

Sterling Cooper Draper Campbell?

I think so.

All the rumors/speculation that Pete's going to die are a red herring... but the fact that Roger jokingly said "Sterling Campbell Draper Pryce" in one scene means that's probably not going to become the new name. Nevertheless, Pete has the lion's shares of accounts. So, without him, what we now call SCDP is dead.

Not only that but I agree that after Lane is caught and ousted, Pete's name will be added. Joan will then be promoted to partner, but not have her name added to the company's, and she'll take over Lane's duties. That'll help her to be able to take care of Kevin.

Mad Men is notorious for its teases. There might be a death as has been alluded to all season but I don't think it'll be any of the regulars. I think they'll go for the most obvious choice because we all think it's too obvious so we expect them to avoid it. The character who'll die will be Greg in Vietnam.

I wonder how much of this post I'm going to eat three weeks from now?

I thought Lakshmi was Juliette Lewis until I finally looked it up. Bert Cooper, God love him, (and Robert Morse in the role) is getting up there in years. His death, though I'm not rooting for it, wouldn't be totally unexpected or "shocking." The C could be changed from Cooper to Campbell. Sterling Campbell Draper Pryce. I just can't fathom how Lane is going to be able to stay with the company once they find out he forged the check with Don's name. That could lead to a public discovery of Don's real identity. Don's a deserter from the US army--not a good thing to be at any time, much less during a war. Hint hint....

I'm not sure how the forgery neccessarily puts Don's real identity at risk.

First, they have to decide to prosecute Pryce. They could just 'fire' him. They would hardly be the first company to avoid bad publicity by handling a potential criminal matter internally.

Second, in order to prosecute someone for forgery in NY the investigation would consist largely of Don saying "that's not my signature" under oath and the police comparing it to recent, authenticated, signatures. Recent would be used because people's handwriting changes over the years sometimes. Similalry, Don has been signing 'his' name on a papers for well over a decade at this point. Why the police go to all the trouble of finding pre-Korean War examples of Don's signature for comparison when they have tons of easily obtained recent documents to use? Checks, divorce papers with Betty, marriage license with Megan, real estate transaction documents...all recent and all easily authenticated.

Finally, there is the fact that, with two more seasons to go, Weiner is unlikely to have Draper found out by the government this early in the show.

Roddenberry found that script and dusted it off for that embarrassing TNG epsiode - Code of Honor.

I think Paul does end up writing for Trek - he's responsible for The Way to Eden! :rommie:

Good thing I've started watching Game Of Thrones and have another season of Boardwalk Empire to look forward to.

This had me rolling! A similar episode was considered! Poor Paul...

The World of Star Trek revealed a story premise that DeForest Kelley had always wanted to see, featuring himself and Nichelle Nichols, described as "something where the two of us were thrown onto a planet where there was a great racial problem, only reversed. The fact that I am a Southerner and she is black, and that we're trapped on this planet together."
Stephen Kandel described the story as "a show with a very militaristic planet being discovered, and the inhabitants were black. The only one they would talk to was Uhura, and they regarded the others as nothing." (Starlog issue #117, p. 44)

In The World of Star Trek, David Gerrold added a footnote to DeForest Kelley's premise, stating, "As a matter of fact, the idea was one that very definitely had been considered. A script version had even been written. And rewritten. And rewritten. The story involved a planet where blacks were the masters and whites were the slaves, but either the premise was too touchy for television or nobody could quite make it work. The script never reached a form where Roddenberry or Coon wanted to put it into production."

The basis of this episode was probably a story premise in Roddenberry's 1964 proposal Star Trek is..., entitled Kongo, about a planet with the "Ole Plantation days" with reversed roles of blacks and whites.

Stephen Kandel referred to the fact that the story was not given the go-ahead as "unfortunate" and went on to say, "I would love to have done it." (Starlog issue #117, p. 44)

While I'm sure there are shipper groups forming already, watching Don and Joan in the bar was anyone reminded a bit of Don and Anna? It felt like Don, knowing Joan had always been 'off limits,' had more of an honest relationship with her than anyone, including Megan.

A more honest relationship in feelings but not details. It helps that they'll never cross over into romance. Joan accepts Don as Don and what goes along with it. Would she accept Don as Dick? I'm not so sure. Tolerate, maybe.
