Mad Men, Season 5. General Discussion Thread (spoilers welcome)

Ugh, Betty is back. At least we have Megan now to run interference on her bullshit schemes.

I loved that they were reading lines from Dark Shadows! :rommie: Is this supposed to be scary? This woman needs a drink! Who watches this garbage?

Roger and Michael in the same scene was hysterical. Michael's nuttiness just bounces right off Roger. I hope they get more scenes together.

I'm telling you--marijuana dealer with a Volkswagen van. Somebody Don and Betty will loathe with a passion. She'll be a Jimmi Hendrix groupie. Burn her bra.

And so it happens and they actually slip a reference to Star Trek in there. Awesome.

Harry Crane was more of a friend to Paul than the Hari Krishna girlfriend.

And just what exactly does Lane need that eight grand for? I missed that somehow. He's gonna get in awfully deep shit if it's learned that Don "endorsed" a check for something he's not even aware of.

It probably had to do with an expatriot exit tax (for leaving England for the U.S. permanently). It was certainly tax-related.

The irony is that Lane is forging a forged signature. Any investigation could cause as many problems for Don as Lane.

Its ironic I have thought recently how the actors who played Paul and Sal feel about being written out of the show. Little did I know Paul would return tonight and in a totally great and unexpected way!

Hare Krishna....Hare Krishna.....Krishna Krishna...Hari Haaari....:rommie:

Lakshmi was a bit of a headcase. I suspect that Matt Weiner isn't as enamored of eastern religions as some folk are. She was a headcase, but she was sure looking out for the cult. Paul can "close" with potential recruits, eh? A cynical view to say the least, but it was nice of Harry to give Paul that money and "nudge" him out to the west coast even if he didn't like the script in order to get Paul away from the loony tunes. If he hadn't jumped at the opportunity to screw her right there in the office, I might have found it touching. Still....didn't expect good old Paul to return like that. Interesting.

I hope Joan gives some of her Christmas bonus to the receptionist. She was a complete bitch to her. I know you're stressed out, Joanie but god damn, he'd have served the papers eventually. Keep it in check. You're losing it. At least she knew better than to take Don up on his implied offer.

Talk about losing it, I KNEW that Don would become disenchanted with Megan when she left the agency and destroyed his fantasy image of her. He'll be cheating again soon enough. She's tired of the bating him into sex with the angry confrontation routine and he's obviously pissed off at her--you crapped all over advertising more than the play we just saw, dear. Talk about a barb. Rather telling that he got his mojo back when he reverted to being a dick. Don Draper, you are not good husband material. There's someone you sleep with but you don't marry, Don Draper.

I think Lane will end up dying or killing himself when the tax man finds out he forged that check. Maybe he'll take a dive down the elevator shaft. That situation will obviously explode. I didn't realize that Jared Harris was Richard Harris' son. He must favor his mother.

I assume you watched the cast on Inside the Actor's Studio. Because he mentioned his father. I actually learned it around the time he first joined the show.

I would love to see the full seminar the cast gave to the students. I heard it was 6 hours! That show has always been that way. Its condensed to highlights for tv airing. I am curious what else was said. I am sure with a large cast opposed to a single actor a lot great stuff had to be edited out.

Yes, that's where I saw it. I'd love all the Mad Men actors to do one on one intereviews. Man, some of the little Don groupies on my other forum are taking Megan to task for being "psycho." I guess anyone who calls Don on his bullshit is a psycho. The punchline is that they've bitched up until now that her character is too good to be true and it makes them nauseous. She knows his philandering tendencies and she knew he was pissed off about the play and her leaving the agency. I'd have made the same assumption if he hadn't come home and didn't call to tell me he'd be with a client. She's not a doormat like Betty. She's just too young for Don. Different generations, very very different perspectives. The children who grew up during the Depression did NOT understand the baby boomers, though sometimes the years between them weren't so large. Don and Megan are doomed, to be sure, but watching the marriage disintegrate will be fascinating with her being willing to fight back.

"Don Groupies" huh? LOL I find the character fascinating but usually not likable. I use the name for the great irony. Most of use you fake names online and of course that's not his real name either.

I noticed similar reactions to those female groupies(maybe that's a false assumption of gender) from Male fans who see him as role model, a male fantasy. They are disappointed when he is happy and faithful in a relationship. But also bothered by his character flaws. They want him to be a simplistic James Bond clone. While he has created that image its far more complicated than that.

I don't think he knows what he wants or who he is. He tries different things for awhile but eventually gets bored, has conflicting feelings and moves on to the next woman and lifestyle.

What makes this show work is that we're seeing believable people, people like us who look normal on the outside but have all kinds of issues on the inside. None of them is perfect. They all have good qualities and not-so-good qualities that conflict (within and without) mixed in varying degrees.

Called it way up thread!
