What should I watch next?

O'Dib

Commodore

Most recently I had marathons of catching up with Curb Your Enthusiasm and Mad Men. Tastekid.com doesn't seem too intuitive about what I might like next. I mean, Party Down's OK one episode in, but not really marathon-worthy if you ask me.

So I come back to the well that so rarely disappoints. What does everyone else think I might really really like given the fact I've also gone on Archer, Arrested Development, Extras, Breaking Bad, Spaced, Bored to Death etc binges. Without listing too many let's just say I've exhausted the mainstream and am looking for more hidden gems.

ETA: meant this for TV & Media.

Is there a particular genre you're interested in? Do you just want to see relatively new programs, or are you interested in older television as well?

Old is good too. In fact, I prefer canceled shows. That way it's a complete work that stands as is, without potential to be ruined by new blood or stale ideas, and no stressing over renewal. In the broadest sense, I'm looking for quality. But I guess I mostly enjoy comedies. Or twisted, funny dramas. In the new season I've really gotten into Veep and Girls.

ETA: Party down is picking up nicely.

Give Corner Gas a try. It's a Canadian single-camera sitcom that was hugely successful. It's already completed its 6 season run, and it's one of my favourites. The easiest thing to compare to would be to say that it's like a Canadian Seinfeld, but with more of a british feel to it. Some of it is corny, sure, but that's part of the charm. The characters are pretty interesting too.

Here's a sample synopsis of an episode:

That actually looks good!

Yeah, it's quite brilliant. Great writing, great characters. I've seen it recommended to people who had never heard of it who ended up loving it. You'd be able to find the DVDs on Amazon.

Here are a few more of my favourite scenes:

I see you listed Extras - if you've not already seen it, then you should check out the original version of The Office.

Okay, matching up the ones you already like with ones you might like...

Archer - try Ugly Americans

Breaking Bad - try Sons of Anarchy

(Neither series is cancelled, but they're the closest I can think of.)

If you like comedies I'd say go old school to The Bob Newhart Show. It's still one of my favorites and has aged well.

^I second that suggestion of Justified. It's a Western/Cop Drama/Comedy all rolled into one. It's like a modern-day version of Deadwood (hell, it even has Timothy Olyphant as The Lawman), with slightly less blood shed and a lot less swearing.

In the internet age it's hard to find hidden gems as anything even half-decent is usually found by some cult following or another

so to list some lesser well-known shows:

- Invasion was a pretty good sci-fi show from a few years ago, cancelled after a season, i enjoyed it and i'm usually quite a tough critic

- persons unknown is another one season wonder and it certainly intrigued me as a group of people are basically marooned in a town, i like those claustraphobic type shows which leads me on to

- the prisoner recently remade but you should watch the original, an oldie but a goodie

and finally if you just want some non-pc laughs then southbound & down is genuinely funny

Isn't it Eastbound & Down?

I don't know if the OP has seen Louie, but it's brilliant. Worth seeing if one hasn't.

If it was on DVD I'd recommend Terriers. While it's about these two scruffy private investigators, one is an ex-cop and the other a former breaking and enerting thief it's mainly a character driven drama. It only lasted one season on FX and is serialized but the main arc of the show gets resolved in the final episode. It's really well written and acted but no one watched it sadly.
