Spider-Man movie (casting, rumors, pix till release)

It looks fun. It's nice to see a wisecracking Spidey and a Peter Parker who doesn't look and sound like he's going to start sobbing at any moment.

I kind of hope the plotline about Peter's parents is exaggerated in the trailer, though. As a story, I just don't find it all that interesting.

I saw the latest trailer and my opinion hasn't changed. I think this is an absoultely stunning looking movie as well, which I expected from Marc Webb. I can't wait to see this.

If anything, I get the impression they de-emphasized it quite a bit here to not scare people off. From interviews, Webb seemed to suggest that this was a major storyline (possibly even covering multiple movies).

I'm curious, was this ever an issue or plotline in the comics? I'm not a hardcore fan, but I got the impression Aunt May and Uncle Ben were the only ones we ever saw or heard much about.

If I recall correctly, his parents were S.H.I.E.L.D agents who were killed spying on the Red Skull. I think later on Harry Osborn and the Chameleon brought them back as robots, to mess up Peter's head.

in the Ultimate universe, Peter's father was a scientist who worked for SHIELD as part of the attempt to recreate the super-soldier serum as well as working with Eddie Brock Sr. on creating a 'suit' to cure cancer, which became the Venom suit. (Despite Bendis writing both USM and Ultimate Origins, he contradicts/retcons/screws up the storyline with first the Venom suit storyline and Pete's parents dying in a plane crash and then brings in the SHIELD thing and has Pete's parents killed by Banner's first Hulk-out.)

oh dear god. Can't anything in Marvel stand on its own anymore? Do they really need to bootstrap all this stuff together? It just reeks of amateurish fanboy wankism.

Parker's parents being spies dates back to 1968 - spies in the Marvel Universe usually means S.H.I.E.L.D.

the whole idea of the Ultimate Universe, besides luring in newer readers with new continuity and no 40-odd years of history to bog things down, was to make it more connected. everything's connected, SHIELD, mutants, super-soldiers, Fantastic 4, the works. half of the super-beings in UMU have powers owing to the US government's attempts to recreate the super-soldier serum and that's where mutants came from. Wolverine was mutant #1 and the mutant gene went viral.

Really? I must've missed (or forgotten) that.
