After giving up on Enterprise when it first aired, I have decided to give it another try on Netflix, especially after hearing how much better the show gets in its later seasons. I skipped most of Season 1, having already seen them when the show first aired. I have finally gotten into Season 2, and I have to say that I am enjoying the show a lot more than I thought I would. My biggest problem originally was (and still is) the characters. They're just so damn bland. However, I am finding the stories to be fairly entertaining.

    And..?

Did you not love that zoological lesson from Archer? It just shows you how isolated the Vulcans were in their Vulcan compound in San Francisco, having to be instructed about quadruped versus biped milestones on Earth. I guess those Vulcan babies are completely different, they must spring from the womb and bound over the red Vulcan plains. And so too, the stars..

It's stirring stuff I tell you.

When I was in my late teens, every Wednesday night I watched Star Trek: Enterprise. It was a little disappointing at first. Within two seasons the show became pretty fun. A few more episodes and it was genuinely entertaining and, before I knew it, it was right there alongside its predecessors, becoming a show worth watching. Most Star Trek shows are like that, RoJoHen. They may have had some different writers, but most of them are pretty much crap in the beginning. It takes about two years before most of them become good. Almost three before they become great. Enterprise isn't much different. It's going to stumble, have some bad episodes--I'm sure more than a few--before it finds its footing. But it's going to learn from those mistakes. That's what being a Star Trek series is all about. I hope you'll eventually see that.

Perhaps Data is actually looking back at one of the most cringe-worthy moments, IMO, in Trek history where Riker catches him attempting to whistle on the holodeck and finishes "Pop Goes the Weasel" for him. How Data dreamily 'marvels' at the 'ease' with which humans whistle.... YECHH! What a horrible scene. Then there is his "Tiny Little Life Forms" Song.....

Reminds me of Hymie the Robot on Get Smart. Hymie could out-think the world's faster computer, reprogram a nuclear war head, yet he was unable to set up a lawn chair. At least with Hymie it was supposed to be funny...

    AND of course:

"Very Well! Then you shall have no treaty, no vaccine, and no Lieutenant Yar!" and

"No more BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!" and

SPOCK: "If you will finish reconnecting my speech centre, I might be able to help."

I like "Enterprise" and I like Archer. Maybe that is why I don't mind this speech and never saw a real problem with it, just as don't hold the "Ee'd Plebnista Speech" against James T. Kirk. Archer was not instructing Vulcans on earth biology, he was using an analogy in his speech to make a point. Trek is full of these dramatic speeches that border on silliness in their intended intensity. Best not to dwell on them, I think, or let them poison the rest of a series.

....P.S. I also DO like Data!

To be honest, I think it has been overhyped. I actually kind of liked the analogy.

I loved Hymie! I thought he was a scream. Classic Mel Brooks funny.

    MAX: Kill the light, Hymie.
    HYMIE: Yes, Max.
    *gunshot*

Hee hee, good point. I never had a problem with the gazelle speech either. I didn't know it was such a "kick me" target until I saw discussion online.

Aw, c'mon. It's so much better than "Bambi Meets Godzilla." In color and everything.

I loved Hymie, too! My favorite Hymie line came when he was trying to blend in at some social or business function and some fellow tries to engage him in conversation....

MAN: So... are you in electronics?
HYMIE: No. Electronics are in me.

Skipped a fair chunk of Season 2 after reading episode descriptions and realizing I'd seen some of them before. I just got done with "The Expanse" and enjoyed it as a season finale. It wasn't your typical Trek cliffhanger but more of a transitional episode into what will clearly be a longer arc in Season 3. I'm also starting to appreciate T'Pol a lot more now that she is starting to show the occasional emotion. She sounds a lot less like a robot when she speaks.

With the exception of Season 4 Enterprise had some of the stinkiest speeches in all of Trek. Wait till you get to the Xindi Turtle soup speech.

I thought this stuff was decent, the Vulcan stuff, the Andoran stuff, Archer .. the characters, all, good. Temporal Cold War, Super Weapon (season 3)? Zzzzzz.

Great character business in season 3, but the point of their mission and the Xindi and all that I hate it.

Never understood all the Gazelle hate. Yeah, humans are gonna make mistakes and as T'Pol pointed out, so did the Vulcans.

I'm not sure that there's "Gaze Speech Hate" per se... it's just such a perfect anecdote how pedantic and bland the writing, directing, acting and indeed entire feel of the series, at least in its first half, was. At least when the Shat had similar moments, there was that partly-mad gleam in his eye, like there was always still a little boy inside who thought everything around him was mind-blowingly cool. As for Stewart... well, he could read a menu with enough gravitas to stun a clown.

But when it's turn for Archer to give his big speech... he looks and sounds like a sitcom high school counselor. It wasn't Bakula's fault, and the result wasn't even awful... it was just dull, dull, dull. This was the conclusion of the second-season premiere, a chance to go big, do a gripping cliffhanger, gain or lose a cast member, shake up the status quo, promise wild adventures in the year ahead, anything. And what did we get? Chicken Soup for the Trekkie Soul.

Smallville's second-season premiere, for comparison, ended with Lex's first-ever intentional killing of a man. And it was awesome, because it was justified. We got a major step towards his becoming the villain, and we cheered him on for it. That felt fresh. That was exciting.
