I'm fairly confident we'll eventually get "Insurrection" and "Nemesis" since there is so much more for them to release of those. We may have to wait a while though, they've put out TVH, TUC and FC all inside of the last few months... My lingering doubt/question: what of Generations? Some have said that we got it all first time; that there isn't anything in the film not on the score. Anyone verify this?
I think there is at least some material from Star Trek: Generations that didn't make the album. Given the running time of the score (remember, the album also has sound effects), it seems likely, although I can't remember any of it off the top of my head. I do recall somebody mentioning that McCarthy was very unhappy with the way the score was mixed.
I was pretty certain a bootleg of Generations did the rounds, with no missing music there'd be no need of a bootleg But now I'm not so sure. Maybe I was thinking of Final Frontier I always have to turn the volume up on the official CD.
Generations is missing some really great material on the original CD. No boot was ever leaked of that score. I have no doubt it will be coming out before long. The only score I wouldn't completely bank on for a complete treatment is Nemesis. Varese Sarabande owns that one and they tend to put out "expanded" Deluxe Editions, not complete expansions. So we'll see. There is a LOT of great music missing from Nemesis, enough to make one reevaluate the score as a whole. There was also a really top quality boot released, which may also be cause for pause (that would make a good name for a rock band).
Let me try. Music missing from the Album. 1. Distress Signal, the revealing shot of the Nexus and the destruction of the transports. 2. 88 years later (reveal of the Enterprise boat) 3. Bad news, Enterprise-D reveal (FAVORITE!) and searching the station. 4. Data talks Geordi into installing the Emotion Chip. 5. Data and Geordi encounter Soran on the station. 6. The star collapses (Great action piece!) 7. Picard and Guinan talk Soran. 8. Stellar Cartography. 9. Outgunned (Film version with the cut to Picard discovering the hole in the rocks) 10. End Credits. That's a lot of good music that is not present on the album. Did I miss anything?
I would tend to agree. I would LOVE for these guys to give Generations the "right" treatment it deserves. There are most definitely tracks missing from the Generations score release -- in particular, one track I always felt was noticeably missing was the evacuation scene music, when the little girl loses her teddy bear. Too, as others have said, the mix was awful on that original release and like others, I always have to turn the volume up to hear it properly.
I'm sure you're all aware there's lots of (free) software available to boost the gain on your audio extractions. The problem with Generations is the excessively steep dynamic range employed on some of the cues - which will have you rapidly backing down on the volume in certain passages. Of course, this can also be compensated for with the right software.
^I sure would've loved them to put out a better quality mix so's I wouldn't have to go through all the trouble.
I always thought the 'Generations' and 'Insurrection' scores were pretty underrated. 'Generations' was some of McCarthy's best work in a while, and 'Insurrection' has some action material I've always liked.
McCarthy's work for Star Trek: Generations isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it's still one of the weakest scores in the series, if not the weakest. Still, it would be nice to have a complete score out there (along with the excellent liner notes that have accompanied the expanded scores for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 so far). Actually, my biggest gripe with the expanded version of Star Trek: First Contact, which I received on Friday, is that half of the liner notes are only available via PDF. I can understand why the extensive liner notes of the amazing Ron Jones set were PDF-only, but I don't understand why GNP Crescendo was unable to add a few extra pages to the CD booklet.
Where did you order yours from? I ordered mine direct from Crescendo on April 3, but it hasn't shipped yet...
I got my FC album the other day also. I haven't had a chance to listen to all of it yet, but I have loved every second so far. I didn't realize more notes were available online.
Aside from the already mentioned evacuation sequence, I'm also thinking of The first scenes onboard the Enterprise-B where Kirk is introduced to Demora. the first Nexus scene with Kirk ("I gave that clock to Bones"). I also think the version of The Final Fight on the album is not the one we got in the movie with the revised ending. The end credits are the first track on the album ("Overture").
