The original album was one of those lame 'enhanced' CDs as I recall where there was a bunch of CD-ROM content that no one ever cared about. I remember even as a teenager buying that CD I wished there was more music on it instead of a bunch of videos that would muck up my computer when I put the disc in the drive.
Full soundtracks simply aren't as commercially viable. They work better as limited edition collectors' editions for the niche nostalgia market. It took the general soundtrack market a loooong time to shift from soundtracks on CDs having to be of similar lengths as their vinyl LP counterparts.
It wasn't just the specter of the LP; the bigger problem was the large reuse fees that the musicians unions negotiated for recordings. In 2002 the unions renegotiated, cutting their fees in half for soundtrack releases, in exchange for credits for the musicians in the recording. This made longer soundtracks more affordable for record labels (pay the same price and get double the music).
Sure, but it's still rare for regularly-released first-time CDs to be the entire soundtrack. I can't think of any.
Ok, so by my count the only 'full' releases that are not done yet are Star Trek V, Generations, Insurection and Nemesis.
La La Land already released an expanded score for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. It quickly went out of print, though. And although the slightly expanded Star Trek--The Motion Picture score that Columbia put out more than ten years ago is nice, there's still a lot of (great) material from that score waiting to be released.
I am hoping they Columbia does release a more expanded version of TMP. I really want some of the early tracks that were redone by Goldsmith like 'The Enterprise'. I hope the Crescendo mix is better than the original release. I love this soundtrack, but the original mix was poor.
The guys preparing the source material for this album also worked on the recent re-releases of II, III, IV, V, and VI and those all turned out just fine. I have no doubt FC will be just as excellent.
The background music - Magic Carpet Ride etc aren't listed as tracks on the CD, so still need to keep hold of the original CD for those. Though I think one differs (a live version?) from the film anyway.
