Similarities between reboot and Nemesis?

Did anyone come away from seeing the reboot with the feeling that there was some kind of an odd connection to Nemesis?

I was prepared to absolutely hate the reboot, but I ended up enjoying it a great deal....not in every single aspect, but much more than I ever thought I would. I really enjoyed the performances of the new cast.

Anyhow, the story, the lighting, Shinzon's ship and Nero's ship, etc....on one nagging level in the back of my mind the reboot seemed like a remake of Nemesis.

One was about the last voyage of an old crew, and nature vs. nurture in Shinzon/Picard and Data/B4. The other was about the first voyage of a young crew, about Kirk fulfilling his destiny and Spock making peace with his duel nature.

Otherwise, they both had bald baddies in big, pointy, dark ships?

I do remember thinking that the scene where Spock flew old Spock's shuttle through Nero's ship was a bit like the scene where Picard flew a shuttle through Shinzon's ship. But other than that, no I don't really think they were very alike.

Agree, and that is why I did not like those overdone ships.

I remember when the first images of Nero were released he was described by many as an "uglier Shinzon."

Barely even that, considering Shinzon was actually a human. The Romulans ended up being the good guys in "Nemesis."

I wasn't aware that F. Murray Abraham was forced at gunpoint to star in a film that he never wanted to be in.

And I'm pretty sure his role in "Last Action Hero" was far more hurtful to him than Ru'afo.

The main similarity between these movies is that they tried to emulate TWOK and totally failed at it.
The motivations of Shinzon and Nero are fuzzy at best and their 'villains two twirl their mustaches' aspects neatly illustrate the contemporary dumbing down of Trek.

I completely agree with you that neither adversary had particularly good motivation, nor was really all that believable.

However, neither did Kahn, especially given that 90% of the audience never saw Space Seed. The only reason that it worked in TWOK was because of a great script and a great actor. (Nobody remembers a scene like this in the newer movies, do they?)

Still, ST09 was able to overcome the rather weak villain simply because of the sheer spectacle of the whole thing. That's what Nemesis missed -- they tried to bolt some uncompelling action onto a rather blah decade-old TNG setup. There wasn't really any hook to get you into the movie.

I agree, Nero didn't seriously harm ST09 as he did not have as much spotlight as Shinzon. Disagree on Khan, he did have a clear motivation. Sure, he said that in Space Seed that he wanted to be the ruler of his own world but it was his prison so Starfleet was responsible for having an eye on him, for the sake of the safety of the citizens of the Federation as well as the safety of the prisoners.
