Things I never noticed before.

The automatic doors were absolutely done intentionally. Why didn't Kirk and Spock notice them? Consider that they come from a society that has automatic doors so commonplace that they never notice their own. It's not an obvious thing, really, so it escaped their notice because they are used to it, even in so primitive a setting. Shortly thereafter, things got hectic and everything was turning weird.

As a kid, it slipped my notice, so think about it A.V.I.A.F. You just noticed it, also. :-)

The only lever-opened door we've seen in a 23th century environment was at Captain Pike's hospital room in The Menagerie.

Not true. Captain Kirk exits Dr. Tom Leighton's 23rd century home at the beginning of "Conscience of the King" by pulling open the 20th century-style lever door handle.

You are right. But rare lever-opened door at the room of a man, who cannot move his arms, is quite an ironic thing anyway.

...Or then sensible medical thinking. Keeps the poor thing from wandering away.

In the 24th century, Wesley's room at Starfleet Academy had a pull open handle door, IIRC.

I assumed Organians were imitating a stagnant society of the future and just decided that automated doors were commonplace in the past, so why not.

The only door handle in all of TOS was on Injured Pike's quarters on a starbase. They didn't want that man escaping! So cruel.

Hmmm? Here's a few more doorhandles in TOS (but not all, by any means):

HOTLINKING TO OTHER SITES IS NOT PERMITTED BY BOARD RULES.

Throughout Errand of Mercy, everyone mistaknely believes that Organia is a stagnant society that has undergone no change for thousands of years. In fact, Spock reports these findings to Kirk early on in the show shortly after they have landed....after he has walked through the automated doors that lead to the council chamber where Kirk is waiting.

Why is it then that no one happens to notice these automated doors to the elder's council chamber? People are walking through these doors constantly and yet no one thinks to ask how it is that such a primitive society has managed to develop sensor operated doors.

Maybe the Organian Council chamber doors are like the "automatic" doors on the Star Trek set.

Meaning they have two guys sitting back there with ropes to open the doors on cue.

What happened? I thought I used the URL tag.

I just checked the edit; no IMG tags used.

Please see my reply to your PM. I have also cc'd T'Bonz to see if I correctly understand the rule. If I blew it, she'll advise us and you can put them back. Otherwise, copy the images into a Photobucket or similar account of your own for use here on the board.

We see door handles, of course, on old buildings--like in "Miri" and "Return of the Archons," "Tomorrow Is Yesterday," "Catspaw," and so on.

But from a 23rd Century standpoint, not only do we see a door handle on Captain Pike's hospital room door:

...but we also see that Tom Leighton has a door handle in his 23rd Century home:

...and we see that the hinged door to the court room on Starbase 11 pulls open in "Court Martial:"

...and we see that George Kirk's lab on 23rd Century Deneva also has a door with a handle:

Here's the list of episodes I found, some of those in which door handles occurred on screen in TOS.

Miri
The Menagerie, Part II
The Squire of Gothos
Tomorrow Is Yesterday
The Return of the Archons
The City on the Edge of Forever
Catspaw
Assignment: Earth
Spectre of the Gun
Requiem for Methuselah

Of those, the handles in Miri, The Menagerie, Part II and The Return of the Archons are presumably all alien and not facsimiles of Earth structures (assuming the one on Rigel VII was accurate and not just made up for the illusion; and unless Miri's planet was really a total copy of Earth).

Requiem for Methuselah counts as having a door handle in a 23rd Century human dwelling.

URL links are fine. It's using the IMG tags and having the picture show on our site that makes for a problem.

Glad to have that clarified. Sorry about the mistake, CC. Now I know the difference.

Not a problem. Thanks Mutai Sho-Rin and T'Bonz for clarifying, and so promptly. :techman:

As has been observed in elsewhere on the board, URLs to TrekCore images sometimes show up as FORBIDDEN, even if they have been tested before and found to work. If this happens, you can simply copy and paste the link into the address field of a fresh browser window, and it should open in there.

There are actually quite a lot of door handles in TOS. As has been mentioned by GSchnitzer, most of them appear in "old buildings" as it were, or perhaps more specifically and inclusively, buildings for whatever real-world or in-universe reason are built according to contemporary or old Earth architecture. I've added three more episodes to my part of the list, now bringing it to 13 episodes:

All Our Yesterdays - http://tos.trekcore.com/hd/albums/3x23hd/allouryesterdayshd0293.jpg

The door handles in All Our Yesterdays also count as (presumably) strictly alien and not facsimiles of Earth structures (at least not in-universe ;)), with those in Miri, The Menagerie, Part II, and The Return of the Archons (assuming the one on Rigel VII was accurate, alien, and not just made up for the illusion; and unless Miri's planet was really a total copy of Earth).

The above examples are not intended to be exhaustive, even within each episode, and at this point I'm posting it mainly just to supplement the examples that GSchnitzer gave just above, to move ever towards nerdy completeness. In that vein, the example in Requiem for Methuselah, a door handle in a 23rd Century human dwelling, is interesting enough that I've made a scaled down version of it available as an inline image for your convenience.

There are a lot of door handles in TOS! With GSchnitzer's four episodes and my 13, that brings the total to at least 17 episodes in which door handles occur. Although I'm not sure, it wouldn't surprise me if there were at least one or two more.

Still all "forbidden" links here, Corporal. Trekcore probably doesn't want direct links to the JPGs.
