Space: 1999 revival

who's to say that the Eagles didn't have antigravity fields?

They did.

Which presented a problem as they tended to float off the stage during concerts. :D

And lest anyone accuse the show of having a lock on silly science: not only would the LACK of a moon cause severe problems, the presence of an extra one also would. Anyone who's seen the ending of The Fifth Element knows what I mean.

A reboot would be acceptable to me as long as the basis was sound(ish) science - along the lines of Star Cops and Planetes. Perhaps the Moon could be phase shifted into a parallel universe rather than out of orbit.

I'm no scientist or even passing pop science familiar person but isn't that also completely impossible in that any hypothetical travel between universes is at a quantum level (or lower)?

More important than Space: 2099 having good science - which, obviously, would need retooling of the basic premise - is that it's good television. Give me a fun space opera show about a lost moon colony and the things they get up to and I'm happy - especially if a lot of that sleek, clean aesthetic is kept. Space: 1999 is visually speaking still one of my favourite sci-fi shows.

What's wrong with Eagles flying through the atmosphere? Moonbase Alpha had Earth-normal gravity. If they could do that, who's to say that the Eagles didn't have antigravity fields? They also had thrusters. Starfleet shuttlecraft aren't very aerodynamic but they fly through an atmosphere.

No they don't - they're fictional as well. :p

My suggestion is kind of ripped from Stephen Baxter's Origin. It's a lot more zeitgeisty than propelling the Moon out of orbit by blowing up a bunch of nuclear waste.

Amen to that.

Ditto.

Preferably not.

I mean I can live with changes if I happen to like them, but I also like the old look just fine.

I've seen what those uniforms looked like. I don't see any current series putting its characters in getups like that. Those unis just scream 70's. I would not be at all surprised if they changed 'em.

You're almost certainly right, but that doesn't mean I want them to change the unis, eh?

I'm quite aware that Space: 2099 if it makes it to air may look absolutely nothing like the original and at bare minimum will have significant stylistic differences, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'd prefer that.

^ I suppose so. I'm sure they won't put the characters in actual military uniforms (how many of S1999's characters were even *in* the military? Titles like 'commander' notwithstanding - that's a bit generic, doesn't have to imply actual service), but they can always find something that looks colorful.

That being said: Now that there'll be a Space: 2099, can we hope for a UFO revival? :) (Speaking of which, wasn't Space: 1999 originally planned as a second season of UFO?)

I like that Space: 1999's visual aesthetic owes a great debt to 2001: A Space Odyssey. I've seen five episodes so far, and only liked one of them, but those visuals have kept me watching. Hopefully a remake would remember that.

I'd be happy to see the uniforms change, though. The look of the costumes (save the space suits, which are practically copies of the ones from Kubrick's movie) makes me happy that live action Trek wasn't on TV at the time. The 70s. Ugh.

AFAIK, the ST:Phase II would have simply used the same uniform styles from TOS.

In order: Sure why not, and yes it was.

They should get Neal McDonough on the phone then! Don't tell me he wouldn't make a great Ed Straker.

As for Space: 2099 casting? I have no idea. Who looks enough like Martin Landau... hmm, how about Jeremy Sisto? He was great on Law & Order.

^
Casting eh? I'm thinking... uh... Jamie Bamber for Alan Carter?

Not good at these.

Essentially. Politely speaking the kind of serious-space-technorat tone that Space: 1999 had in its first year (and not to mention the title) seems to owe a fair bit to Kubrick's film.

This said, I'd always figured if they ever remade the show they should have just called it Moonbase Alpha, but I guess that wouldn't have the same sort-of name recognition this has.

On the other hand I also really like Star Trek: The Motion Picture's look, including the often reviled uniforms.

The Admirals unifrom in TMP was decent enough looking, not to keen on the others. Though lets hope they keep any new series more in tune with the original (though updated for the 21st century) than they did with the Thunderbirds movie a few years back.

It'll be interesting to see how the CGI Thunderbirds show looks. WHenever it sees the light of day.

As to Uniforms, keep the sleeves adding matching collars, ditch the bell bottoms and the beige boots....and don't go with the 2nd season uniform changes..except maybe the ID badges..

as to the Eagles, no major changes to the exterior, interior changes (esp. the cockpit arrangement/instruments) are welcome..

No forehead aliens...either humanoid (as befitting the 1st season story arc), or totally alien forms would be good..

And bring Maya into the show early on...she was the only bright spot in the dismal 2nd season..

I just hope any remake isn't "dark and edgy".

Already seen that mindset poison certain other remakes and spin-offs, and (IMO) they were ####.

Amen to that as well. Although dark and edgy was okay by me in times of plenty, I think the opposite would be more palatable in times of austerity.

As for flared trousers (bell-bottom pants) and beige boots, what goes around comes around. I'd draw the line at Elizabethan neck ruffs though.
