Does the Matrix series have only one good movie?

Do people here think Return of the Jedi was a way better movie than The Matrix Revolutions? Maybe if Revolutions had been better made, the whole franchise might have been remembered more fondly.

I DO think Return of the Jedi is a way better movie. (Well, maybe not WAY). But, unlike Revolutions, I wasn't cheering for the Empire to win by the end of Jedi.

I pretty much LOATHED the characters in Revolutions... that General guy and that whiny kid... HATED them. Most of the characters in Zion, I hated. I was wanted the machines to wipe them out, all of them.

I didn't feel that way in Jedi.

People will overlook a weak middle act as long as the beginning and ending acts are great.

I actually don't think the Matrix movies suffered from a weak middle act. Reloaded wasn't that bad... it expanded the universe. Clearly, it's not as good as Empire... but it's not a bad movie. I think it suffered because of expectations.

But Revolutions: it stank. Basically, because it was so bad, I won't buy Reloaded on DVD...

There can be only one... movie.

Sorry what I meant to say was Neo trying to think his way out. It's just the look on his face when he sits down after realising he can't get away :)

That's his "I'm fucked" face, but don't worry about not getting it, it's the same as every other expression he has.

It suffered because the W's had nothing new to add, and thought the only reason the first film did well was because of the action and special effects. So instead of writing a compelling story, they loaded it with as much action and effects as possible.

There is no reason why the story couldn't have been better. Hell, they could have bought a better story off someone and concentrated on directing and the effects.

I disagree they had nothing to add. They expanded the universe. The idea of what ghosts really are. There were other programs with other motivations. More philosophy. What Zion is like. Smith escaping into the "real world."

The problem: they had NO idea what to do with the new ideas and pieces. And that's why it all falls apart in Part 3

I always preferred The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions over the original Matrix. I enjoyed the revelation that "the One," the resistance's idea of a messiah figure, was just another system of control (as are all would-be messiah figures in all systems), and that things weren't so simple as "Humans good, Machines bad."

I also really enjoyed the fact that the Wachowski brothers made it a point to depict the Human community of Zion as being much more ethnically and racially diverse than most films of the future. Often times, watching sci-fi set in the future, one gets the impression that society is still dominated by whites, but the Wachowski brothers bring to life a vision of a truly racially egalitarian society. I really appreciated that.

And I just really enjoy Hugo Weaving's portrayals of the Agents Smith. Yeah, it's hamtastic, but I ate it all up. :)

In my opinion, it has two. I liked The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded a lot, but I didn't care for how Revelations concluded the trilogy.

If we go with the official versions, then yes, only one good movie. I have seen a fan edit of the two sequels though that drastically improves both movies (even if the new ending is a bit sloppily and obviously spliced together).

It cuts out Jar Jar, doesn't feature kids acting like kids, and ignores The Last Stand. Automatic win.
