I knew it would happen eventually. The success of nuStarTrek really is what I think pushed the project to the "let's do it" phase. They want to cash in on that success as much as possible.

I don't think there's much overlap between the nuTrek audience and the TNG-R audience. Sure, there's a few new people nuTrek pulled into the franchise and who are now backtracking and watching the older material, but for the most part TNG-R will sell to pre-existing fans.

Got mine from Amazon today. I have to say I'm really impressed with the pictures and the colors. Even little details that I never noticed before, like how the name Enterprise is written on the side of the lower half of the ship.

Stewart's stuntman in Sins of the Father and Spiner's in Encounter at Farpoint are pretty noticeable...don't know if it's always been like that.

I figured I'd pick this one up because at least it would be affordable. Paramount charged an arm and a leg for Star Trek box DVDs in the past and present. Though I know CBS calls the shots now.

My feeling is that they are hoping to catch some of the nuTrek fans by offering them a Hi Def version of the most popular Trek series, because HD is basically a given in today's large screen era. Maybe a bunch of newTrek fans who have only seen older Trek in passing, will now think twice about purchasing the TOS-R, and TNG-R sets (as they come out), because "hey, this Trek movie was pretty good, maybe the shows are worthy of watching".

That would never happen if they didn't have the HD versions at their disposal.

It wasn't that long ago that many people said TNGR would never happen.

It was felt it would be too time and money intensive for them (CBS/Paramount) to want to bother with it as we all knew what the project would involve (putting the episodes back together again from scratch.) We were wrong.

DS9 did horrible in ratings (some valid reasons IMO, some non-valid ones) so, while I feel it will eventually be done, it probably won't be any time soon. IF TNG-R is really successful for them, they will do VOY-R next, and if THAT is successful, then they will probably do DS9-R.

DS9 had better ratings than VOY. I imagine the determining factor will be the TNG Blu Ray sales and also what syndication/streaming deals they can make. If CBS feels they need to remaster DS9/VOY to continue to sell into syndication then they will spend the money. If not then they won't.

I still consider it unlikely we'll get a DS9-R or a Voy-R, but then again, if any genre show from that timeframe is ever going to be remastered, it's going to be those two. I do have a glimmer of hope there.

Voyager, particularly the later seasons looks spectacular! The difference in quality between standard TNG and standard VOY is almost like night and day. VOY-R would not be such a contrast in difference as TNG-R is (and TOS-R even the more so)

Dunno, I actually find the latter seasons of Voyager fairly unremarkable-looking. It has the misfortune of having been done in an era where CGI was more cost-effective than miniature work, yet couldn't really hold up to it in visual quality yet (unlike on later shows like BSG), nor did it embrace the CGI look stylistically to make up for it as Babylon 5 did (not that I'm saying it should have - wouldn't have been what the Trek audience expected).

I think artistically speaking Star Trek peaked with Deep Space Nine, both in terms of live action production design and the space VFX.

That said Voyager did have a bunch of standout visual splendor episodes like Timeless, too.

Edit: TNG OTOH works visually for similar reasons why Babylon 5 works: It embraced the limitations of its means and elevated them to a style. Those undynamic shots you won't cease to lament look stately and like grand gestures to me, and fit the show's tone well overall.

My 2 cents on the series..obviously STNG gets the treatment first as I predicted, then Enterprise, because it'll be quicker and its a shorter series, then back to DS9, since it's ratings were respectable.

"Remastering" Enterprise reminds me of that joke on Family Guy of the guy who's proud of his son going to DeVry:

Man 1: Hey, did I tell you my son got into DeVry?
Man 2: What did he have to do, open the door?
Man 1: You never let me have anything! :(

In this case it would go like this:

Studio: Hey did you know we're going to remaster Enterprise?
Audience: What'd you have to do? Copy it to a BD?
Studio: Ahhh.....yeah pretty much.....

Yeah, ENT doesn't need to be remastered because it was filmed with HD in mind. I think the CGI was rendered at 720p, but that'll probably still look okay on Blu-ray.

I didn't even realize it until now, but the opening credits I posted were the Season 5 opening credits, meaning we got the warping effect on the logo. That was cool.

I really wish they had kept the warping effect on the logo. It was cool back then, and it's cool now.

How it's original run went probably depended on if you local affiliate had an HD version of UPN. If the local station of yours that ran UPN had an HD version you'd get to see Enterprise in HD (as mine did towards the end of Ent's run.) If your local station didn't have an HD channel then you wouldn't have seen it in HD.

Couldn't agree more with this statement. nuTrek is a complete divorce from the TNG era. The amount of people who got into TNG through seeing the new movie must be tiny.

If we're talking about the younger generation, yeah. But TNG was a very big mainstream success, with something like 20 million viewers. There's probably a great many people who watched back then, moved on to other things (the other spinoffs not appealing to them), and then came back for JJ's similarly mainstream Trek.

IDD, Encounter at Farpoint started with 27 million viewers and All Good Things ended with 30 million viewers.

This is truly awesome to have finally. Watched all 3 episodes, great stuff. I can't wait for season one, but season three is the one I'm really looking forward to. Season one will be like a whole new experience based on what we've seen so far.
