I think you might see Enterprise Blu-ray releases tucked between TNG-R releases starting in 2013.

Honestly I think with TrekXII at the cinema and getting a Blu-ray release that year they don't want to oversaturate the market and spread out the Trek property and have product to release every year. Do you have any rumors or sources for thinking within 12-18 months there will be a ENT Blu-ray release since ENT is already in HD on Netflix. It is mostly the same Trek fans shelling out $80. for a Blu-ray season of TNG. No all ENT fans are not TNG fans and vice versa but you get the point.

Just a gut feeling. If they're going to put Enterprise on physical HD media, it'll have to be sooner rather than late. In 2015, Blu-ray will be nearly a decade old and probably on its way out, being replaced by streaming.

I never realized it before, but the "hope we can be friends" scene between Picard and Crusher is placed in a really odd spot in the episode.

Yeah! That's exactly what I thought when I watched it last night. Just as Riker and the away team are about the beam onto the mysterious and potentially hostile alien craft, Picard pops down to sickbay for a natter.

I think it was probably one of the scenes added late to pad out the episode as it was running short. The scene with Crusher examining Geordi's eyes was one certainly.

That's something that's bugging me as well. If they intend to spend until the end of 2015 on this project my hopes for DS9 and Voyager are going down. By then HD will surely be the norm for any kind of streaming and broadcasting and 4k will probably be starting to see the light of day. Which means that those two shows will be off the air and the internet by then, slowly to be forgotten by anyone who isn't a die-hard Star Trek fan.

I doubt ENT will get a bluray release. I suspect that they'll just make an "official" download pack at some point. In fact, there's a good chance that they won't finish with the TNG blurays and just do the same.

As the switch to downloadable media becomes more and more ubiquitous, I don't know how long CBS can justify the production costs of physical media (packaging).

On thing though, I think that bodes a little better for DS9/Voy because they can squeeze a bit more milk from the cow when it comes to charging for downloads.

I'd suspect we'll get all of TNG on Blu-Ray, only doing part of it wouldn't be fair and a bit of a gyp to the fans.

I'm also dubious that streaming will be the "norm" and physical media will be gone by 2015. Streaming High-Definition material is barely around now I don't think that will change greatly in three years, keep in mind there's still plenty if not millions of people out there either without the internet, dial-up or have only basic cable. How many times was the conversion for broadcast TV to go HD pushed back?

Will DS9 and Voyager get physical media? Perhaps not and will go straight to streaming but I suspect TNG will go all the way.

And, well, I doubt physical media will ever "really" die at least not any time in the near future. People still use video tapes and still buy CDs.

It took 40+ years to go from color NTSC to ATSC in the US (and another 20 years for NTSC to be obsoleted). I have a hard time believing that we'll already have 4K broadcasts only 20 years after ATSC debuted, and only six years after it became the default.

Oh, I think it's definitely a relevant question - and it's got no solid answer. The TNG blu-rays will undoubtedly be the highest selling out of the latter-day series. Not sure about comparing them to the TOS ones though.

Here is what to expect:
Ultra High Definition Television (or UHDTV, - NHK advocates this video format as Super Hi-Vision.

The final goal is for UHDTV to be available in domestic homes, though the timeframe for this happening varies between 2016 to 2020 (mainly based on technical reasons concerning storage and broadcast distribution of content).

which means 2020-2025.

Blu-rays will be around until 2020. It will still be fine for releases as consumers won't get 4K TVs anytime soon.
I think consumers will embrace a higher resolution in 2020 rather than 3-D or holographic in-the-round television.

I do not think physical media will die. In fact I know more people who want to own a movie on a disc rather than to download it on their harddrive.

You have something physical, you have a collection... you can show off.

You can'd do this with a USB harddrive.

Btw... do not forget the Special Editions and gimics they add to those releases.

Yeah I've been re-reading the TNG Companion, and they readily admit that the editing was a lot clunkier than they wanted it to be-- just because they had so much freakin time to fill. Even with all the added Q stuff, the episode ran really short, so scenes had to drag on a lot longer than normal.

It would defintiely be interesting to see what a crisper, more tightly-edited version of Farpoint might look like someday.
