At what age do you think girls should

Miss Chicken

stop playing with dolls?

I missed the word think from my title :(

I didn't know it was an issue until I read the question, and some answers, on another site.

It made me wonder as my mother gave away all my Barbie dolls and their clothes when I was 11. She didn't ask me if I still wanted them. I know I was angry at the time because I was still playing with them. I would have been in grade 6 at the time.

None, any concern should be based on the type of interaction with the toys over time rather than the use or presence.

Don´t think there is specific age, its individual. Some play with them longer than others. If a child has enough experiences with something it will move on to new experiences. By the way I would also not stop a boy playing with dolls when he wants it.

Whenever they want.

The world would be better if more people spent more time playing.

Re: At what age to you girls should

Oprah still plays with dolls.

On second thought, that may not be the best example.

Re: At what age to you girls should

Sorry, Miss Chicken, not a girl, so I hope you don't mind if I still respond; I think you should play with dolls (er, action figures) for as long as you want. Be 90 and own a teddy bear, and keep it with you when you sleep, I would have no problem with it. I'm tempted to do that myself sometimes. If it makes you happy, and it harms no one, feel free. :)

Re: At what age to you girls should

Dolls are awesome. More people need to own them.

Re: At what age to you girls should

There is no particular age to stop playing with dolls. And even if a child has stopped playing with a toy, especially a beloved toy like a doll, that child may not be ready to get rid of the toy for many years, if ever. I still have my Barbie Dolls, haven't played with them in years, but I still have them. Maybe I'll give them to my daughter to play with :)

Re: At what age to you girls should

The odd thing is, when I mentioned to my older sisters about how Mum didn't ask me if she could give the dolls away, my eldest sister told me that Mum had asked for her permission. My sister who was about 14 at the time said 'yes' adding that she was too old for dolls. My other sister who was 13 at the time has no memory of being asked, while I am 100% certain that I wasn't asked and I was quite devastated to come home from school and find the dolls were gone. There were six dolls in all, my sisters and I each had a Barbie and a Sindy, and all 6 dolls were stored in big tin tub in my room. My sisters had lent me their dolls sometime during the previous year.

I cannot understand why my mother would ask permission from the eldest girl but not the younger child who was still playing with them and in whose room all six dolls were kept.

Yeah, your mom really should have asked all you girls about getting rid of the dolls. You know if you're still upset over this, you could probably find the dolls on ebay or craig's list. It's not the same, but it might be nice.

No, I don't want Barbies any more.

After my mother's death six months ago, my sisters and I talked about a lot of things and this was just one thing that popped up. Reading the question on another site made me think about it again.

Hell, some adults still play with Barbie and Ken dolls. Of course, that’s more in the nature of a fetish.

Re: At what age to you girls should

I will start to collect Barbie and Ken dolls when antomically correct ones are on the market - which I doubt will be in my lifetime.

Re: At what age to you girls should

We have numerous fully grown men here who play with dolls.

Nevertheless, the answer is 10.

Re: At what age to you girls should

o uhh... play with?

Nope. Just my bit to honour the memory of the late Ken Handler. The dolls' creator named them after her own son and daughter and the real Ken hated the fact. That wasn't just because the doll Ken was missing parts that the real Ken had, but also because the doll Ken was a surfer and sportsman while the real Ken liked to play the piano.

Did he ever get an inheritance? He died several years before his parents did.

I don't know, you seem to know a lot about them so I'll let you tell me :rommie:

Just struck me as ridiculous to be whining that a doll named after you had different hobbies than you did. I'm sure the real Ken lived quite well off the back of the plastic Ken.
