As pointed out, one of those (the other link gives me an error) is a CG repro of the six-footer, so you'll need better evidence of the four-footer's worth.
It looks to me like the original did the same thing. I'd have to check it in motion, but the still frame at least shows a duplicated, rotated explosion for both old and new versions.Unless this is just rough footage it looks like they've gotten rid of the really nice, fluffy trademark orange and pink TNG explosions for something rougher and more yellow and harsh. I don't really care for it. So the sploddies weren't captured on film? That seems odd. Interesting to see that even when scaled to the same size the crappy Amazon video is sharper and more detailed than the DVD screen cap.
Thats highly unfortunate because the replacement cg explosion sucks!
If you take a closer look you will see, that they used the same explosion twice on this model. They did not even change the timing!!!
The right explosion is a smaller version rotated by 90° counterclock wise of the big explosion on the left...
Come on producers, you can do better than that!
So isn't this a case where you should praise them for sticking to the original intent?
I love how the original version has some real obvious 'cloning brush' areas, and the new shot does too, but in different places. (Check out the foreground dirt to Picard's right.)
Please, to the average person the differences between the two models would appear INCREDIBLY minor. Hell, even most TNG fans probably couldn't tell much, except perhaps that one was slightly more detailed than the other.
To suggest that one model was horribly inferior to the other would just seem laughable to them.
Well the CG ships on DS9 were usually pretty obvious (like the very fake CG Defiant). This ship looks a lot more solid than any of those. At least to my eye.
But then again, it's been awhile since I've seen the episode.
Back then CGI effects were very much dependent on the "source material." It was much more common to "scan in" a physical object than it was to create one entirely from scratch. The Galaxy classes we see in DS9 were 3D scans of the 6-foot model (and then touched up/changed in the computer most notably by removing the registry number.)
There was a physical Defiant model as well but maybe some of the CGI shots were done with a scratch-built CGI model in an attempt to get more detail or features the physical model didn't have? Anyway, I remember always being very impressed with the CGI work being done on DS9 back then especially when it was compared to the CGI work being done on B5 during the same time.
This SITE very nicely shows how very different the two models were and how the 4-foot model had much harsher and bolder lines on it which damaged the "grace" of the ship. Even when watching it when I was young I could tell the difference between the various shots and always wondered why the ship sometimes looked like crap and why it sometimes looked elegant and beautiful. (This was before I knew of the different models they had.)

Yeah I guess it's possible they were using the high-quality Generations model for that sequence. It didn't look all that great on the big screen, but it would have been more than adequate for TV.
In any case, that was certainly the 4-footer at the end of The Jem'Hadar, and I thought it looked freakin fantastic. So there.

Irrelevant. They could never have done those massive space battle sequences without CG- it's been stated repeatedly that they are all Foundation Imaging CG-generated battles. It's not a physical model, no matter how much we think it might look like one.
Hmm, not sure if it's been brought up already, but I wonder if they'll replace that painting of the docked Enterprise in 110011001. It was pretty cool for the time, but I imagine it would look even more obviously like a painting in HD.
I know there are a lot of purists out there who would prefer to keep it, but personally I'm kinda hoping for an updated version.

I'd like to thank all those who have taken the time and made the effort to post screenshot comparisons. It's such a great way to examine the changes going on and make some real determination as to their value. I was really hoping someone might post a shot of the village from 'The Inner Light' because that is one of the big 'effect' shots from that episode. Cheers gaghyogi49. I'll wait until I see the shot on the actual blu-ray and post comments in the other thread, but I think it's pretty good what they've done. It's interesting that they didn't follow what was there precisely. For the most part, I actually think that's a good thing because little things like that may breath new life into each and every episode. At the very least, they will make for interesting discussion.
Edit: personally, I think the ship explosion from the German trailer looks HORRIBLE. I think the lens flare effect Tosk created made the shot thousands of times better.

Yout first picture is not the 4 foot model, but the CG model from GENERARIONS based on the 6 foot model... there you go...

That is really quite funny. They put in all that time and that effort to recreate the village and valley background and then they drop the ball by not taking more than 10 mins to create the foreground!
I suspect so, we've already seen they've replaced the matte of the village in "The Inner Light" and, as you say, it'd probably look "even more like a painting" in HD.
Well my amazon status updated to "Shipping Soon," it's kind of irritating that I've had this preordered since November just to have my shipment delayed 2 more days.
What shipping method do you have selected?
Mine arrived from Amazon UK this morning. Just skimmed it so far, my wife would be most offended if we didn't watch it together, but it looks great to me. I really can't wait for seasons 2 and 3, which have always been my favourites.
I pre-ordered the disc on jan 24th and it still hasn't even shipped from Amazon.uk.
