Confirmed by an insider at blu-ray.com that the Sins of the Father shot is entirely CGI, basically a test to show they can produce the same quality if needed.

Wow, not even 24 hours to catch that... Some true Trek fans here...

I only noticed because I was playing the Blu-ray and the DVD at the same time, side-by-side...

That whole shot is CGI (even the Enterprise), and is actually a great example of how well they can reproduce the look of the models using CGI if they absolutely have to (and I believe this is the only shot that is CGI'd on this set).

Maybe it is the original model but with CGI effects added to it. Not an expert on what can be done with CGI but I assume that can be done.

It's a good theory, but the differences I can see (deflector in one shot, in the other warp pylons, RCS thrusters, maybe lifeboats and Captain's Yacht) seem too complex to be digitally added to a real-life model, and a moving one at that.

I have long been an advocate of sticking to the original footage, but I will turn hypocrite and say that if the 4 footer is gone forever I'll be a happy man.

If they mix and match and only replace some shots of it, I'll be less so. :)

+1

Test PASSED :)

Devastated that it looks like they are ditching the 4ft model, even though it has obvious aesthetic flaws I always prefered it to the ILM model.

I think you are in a minority with that view. There are many shots of the 4ft model that look great but some look like a toy even at SD resolution. We still don't know if it has been ditched completely yet as it would be a huge undertaking to erase it from the show!
Definitely in the minority lol. I agree it is a tremendous task considering Jein's model was used for creating virtually every new model shot of the Enterprise from 'The Defector' onwards.

But if that is the case I hope, like most, they are more advantageous as they were towards the end of TOS R and give us some shots they couldn't pull off during the inital run.

Looks like the impulse engine is sticking out farther on the CGI model.
I don't know if it's actually a geometry change on the model, a result of all the blur in the tape originally used to edit the episode, or a timing thing, because I've noticed the same sort of geometry line up issue with the comparison shots of the ship back when we first saw that bit from the opening credits.

I'm trying to compare what I can see of the impulse engine in the original shot with a shot created for GEN. Is it possible the impulse area was modified for the film?

Well, leaving (or exactly recreating) the star-streaks in what is otherwise a new CG shot, seems to suggest they are being pretty faithful to the original compositions.

Ask Doug about the use of Tobias Richter's finely crafted Enterprise-D mesh in Next-Gen remastered.

I'm speculating radio silence.

You think it's Richter's? I don't recall seeing a Galaxy by him, actually ...

Edit: Nvm, saw it now.

I've only been watching this project out of the corner of my eye with moderate interest. But I must admit that some of these stills are really impressive.

This might actually breathe new life into TNG For me. I haven't watched a whole episode years.

Also, I really like the new BoP it looks way more "predatorial" and menacing than that TSFS model which I never really cared for. I hope they continue to use it in other episodes.

If that's how they use CG models, fine by me. TOS-R was really annoying because they went crazy with camera moves and lighting. But if they simply replace "bad" footage with the same camera angles, camera movement and lighting, that's well done.

I don't think it's been officially confirmed, but I'm 99% sure it's Richter's. He built it last spring/summer for a con-video I believe. It's been altered a little here to better duplicate the early look of the model, works well.

It's the exact same design.
Yeah, they just changed the BoP's angle relative to the Enterprise and the camera.
Yes...but now it looks as if BOP is pointing too high up.

Honestly, the CGI shot of the ship at warp screams CGI. It's the lighting that's the giveaway.
