Why do you love Lt. Cmdr. Data?

Data is one of my all time favorites!

I can totally see why some people would not feel that way. His lack of development as a character is a little frustrating. But i will say that 9 out of 10 times i laugh aloud while watching TNG its Data. That counts for a lot in my book. Plus watching Spiner act is awesome. Especially the episodes where Data breaks character, like Masks. He's great.

Data is sweet. He has a good heart at his core and struggles to always do the right thing no matter what.

How can you not love that???

Because he is smart but he can't figure a chineese finger trap out, how to use contractions, never understands joke, or slang. So he reminds me of so many people I know who are very smart, but dont have social skills worth shit. So to me he always been jackass in that regard and am pretty sure he's just playing dumb and pretending not to understand these things when he really does. It makes the humans feel more comfortable i recon. Like Lt Cmdr Spock's smile early in the TOS.

I adore both of them. I knew Data first, so I wasn't constantly comparing him to Spock, as I didn't know much about Spock when I was watching TNG. I can see the similarities now, though.

I love his childlike innocence, and his complete lack of understanding human emotion. It's so... cute....O_o

Very intresting points of views.
The prime reason that Dr. Pulaski was added was because of the McCoy/Spock relationship.
When the writers tried to make a Pulaski/Data relationship it failed.
Data had childlike innocence and when Pulaski was doing what McCoy did to Spock, it just made her look like a jerk.
"Green-blooded hob-goblin" might have worked between Spock and McCoy but "cold hand of machinery" went too far.

Meep moop mop.

Funny that you bring up Dr. Pulaski...I've been wondering for a while, am I the only one that prefers her over Dr. Crusher? While I admit that I couldn't stand Pulaski at first (I hate change), as time went on I grew to really like her and was sad to see her go...Anyone else feel the same?

Data is a decent enough character, Brent Spiner knew how to play the part just right. Watching him now on ENT you can see his acting talent goes well beyond that of a certain loveable android.

I have seen TNG before TOS, that's why I don't mind that she was a Bones copy. Crusher is a pretty flat and boring character in my opinion.

I fell in love with Spock when I was about 8 years old. I started watching TNG in middle age and do adore Data. There is an obvious comparison to make, but it is superficial. Spock is psychologically complex. Data is simple, and that is what is so appealing about him. He is simply good, simply trustworthy, simply loyal, simply logical, simply brilliant. It is a pleasure to watch Spiner just hint at an emotional life that Data himself does not comprehend.

Well, I like Data. He's okay and all, but love? I wouldn't say I love him.

I think my favorite moments with Data are just the little ones. Like after he gave those long, complimentary art critiques to the other students in the painting class, and when he saw Picard's just gave him a little nervous look.

Spiner was so good at those, and had such great comic timing.

Stewart was outstanding, but his supporting cast was weak. Spiner was one of the few actors who seemed to belong on the same set as Stewart.

Crosby, Sirtis, and Dorn was clearly pretty weak, but the others I thought held their own well with Stewart.

The problem was most of them were just never given a lot of great material to work with.
