The next companion should be...

I wouldn't be surprised. Go with some timey-wimey fairy tale explanation of how The Eleventh Doctor met with her before she died.

Or she could simply be playing an original character. Remember that Karen Gillan had a bit part in "The Fires of Pompeii" before being cast as Amelia Pond.

And Freema Agyeman played a minor role in "Army of Ghosts" before being cast as Martha Jones.

Hmm...Sophia Myles as the next companion? :vulcan: Nah, likely not, but I certainly wouldn't complain if she was. :D

Yeah, but in both cases, those were minor roles before the highlighted roles. Sophia Myles already had her big role. Unless they go with her being the descendant of Madame De Pompedour a la Verity Newman in "The End of Time."

Lalla Ward played a major role in "The Armageddon Factor" before being cast as the second incarnation of Romana in the very next storyline (although that was handwaved as Romana deliberately modelling her new appearance on Ward's character from the previous story). Jean Marsh had a prominent role as King Richard's sister in "The Crusade" before being cast as short-term companion Sara Kingdom in "The Daleks' Master Plan" -- and Nicholas Courtney had a prominent role as Sara's brother in the first few episodes of "Master Plan" before coming back several years later as the Brigadier. And Colin Baker played a fairly prominent antagonist in "The Arc of Infinity" before getting cast as the Sixth Doctor less than two years later.

In the new franchise, Eve Myles (no relation to Sophia, apparently) played the prominent character Gwyneth in "The Unquiet Dead" before being cast as Gwen Cooper in Torchwood. (And Naoko Mori was in a smaller role in DW before getting TW, but that was retconned as the same character.)

The next companion should be...

an alien...

i'm sick to death of human companions from the current time period... bored, bored, bored...

get an interesting companion again... alien, cyborg, human from the distant past, kidnap Shakespear or cleopatra for a season or two of madness...

need an interesting companion to challenge the doctor again

I've been wondering that very thing for a few weeks, ever since Myles asked Moffat on Twitter for a lunch meeting after the New Year.

Myles has also been retweeting fans' ideas for how to bring the Madame de Pompedour back in Doctor Who the past few days.

If, somehow, the eleventh Doctor were to travel with Reinette, I think it would have to come in that period between Rose's visit to France in 1754 and the tenth Doctor's appearance on horseback in 1759, which could explain why she was so certain that the Doctor would come for her when the Clockwork Men appeared and keeps intact the fact that she never saw the Doctor again after 1759. It would also explain why she was so willing to go with the tenth Doctor, because she'd already traveled with the eleventh and had an idea of what to expect.

Y'know, this sounds totally like the eighth Doctor/sixth Doctor/Charlie thing. ;)

The more I think about this, the more I want to see Reinette and River sharing the screen.

Problem is that Sophia played an established historical characters whose death played a major part in the character development of the Tenth Doctor. I don't see her playing the same character - but there is certainly no law against her coming back in another role.

However as comments below that Zap2It item correctly point out, remember that Steven Moffat is also in charge of another TV series, and Sophia could just as well be lining up to appear in Sherlock. That said, Sophia does mention the fireplace, and she tends to use that sort of language when addressing Who fans, so...

Of course, maybe she never saw the "Doctor" again when she went off with the mysterious "Traveller". :p

Alex, I'm not seeing the problem. :)

The eleventh Doctor picking up Reinette and traveling with her for a season doesn't negate the tenth Doctor's two-hundred-years-earlier character development one iota. If anything, it would be an interesting character development for the Doctor, because he would have a second chance to know someone that he knew briefly, but intensely, when he was much younger. It would also be interesting to see how the Eleven/Reinette relationship plays out; would there be the (U)ST between them the way there was between the tenth Doctor and Reinette, or would they just be good buddies in a replay of the tenth Doctor and Donna? Or would the eleventh Doctor, Reinette, and River have mad threesomes? The possibilities are endless! :)

Now, if you had said "Problem is that Sophia played an established historical character and we know how her story turns out which removes potential character drama," that I could agree with. Moffat couldn't kill Reinette the way he keeps killing Rory, after all. :)

I just checked Sophia's Twitter feed and she's asking fans to send her ideas for a Reinette spin-off series. I ASSUME that's just a joke, however!

Allyn's idea of the Doctor travelling with Reinette somehow in the middle of her encounters with the Tenth Doctor is a good one. Unfortunately, though, I think it cuts too close to what Moffat has already done with River Song (never mind the fact that the Doctor being married to River is something the show still needs to resolve).

Unless the speculation that they're actually talking about Sherlock is true, my guess is Sophia will appear as a new character - maybe a relation to Reinette. History shows Reinette had a daughter who according to the Wikipedia article was nicknamed "Fanfan". It's a bit of a cliche to have the daughter look like the mother, true, but we already had the "lookalike cousin" barrier broken with Martha Jones.

Alex

PS. Ahhh... just found out "Fanfan" died at the age of 9 so that wouldn't work. Though considering Reinette was a mistress there is room for an "unknown" offspring.

I dunno. I've said for several years now that there should be a Masterpiece Theater-styled costume drama about the Madame de Pompedour, written (or overseen) by Moffat and starring Myles as a spin-off from Doctor Who but done completely straight. :)

Oooh! I got it!

Reinette was pregnant twice by Louis XV, but both of her pregnancies ended in miscarriage. But what if one of them didn't, and to save one of them from the Clockwork Men the Doctor had to take one away to be raised by someone else?

Oh, wait. That's River's story. :-/

Dr Who would have been better had we not had the River Song story crammed into it. I myself have nothing against Myles coming back as Reinette or a new character, and travelling with the Doctor, however.

First, is the Doctor really married to River or she married to the Tesselecta?
Second, 11 could pick her up after 10 rescued her but before her death. She never saw 10 after the rescue and he came back when she died. 11 could come anywhen in between and take her on a year or two adventure(s) and plop her back right after she left. Maybe even her (early) death a result of her last adventure.

There's a precedent for actors who have guest-starred in previous Doctor Who stories to return in a new role. Heck, one of those guest stars wound up eventually playing the Doctor years later...

The Doctor was inside the Teselecta, controlling it, and speaking through it. If you married someone who was, say, sitting on a bicycle at the time, you wouldn't be married to the bicycle, you'd be married to the person operating it.

A more pertinent question is, since the wedding occurred in an alternate timeline that was then unmade, does it legally count?

Based on "Night and the Doctor," I would say they are married (by convention if not legality), since in it we see several Doctors and Rivers doing date-y mate-y kinds of things. :)

It's amazing how much we know from Twitter.

There's also a suggesting that Moffat just wanted to pass the word along that Sophia was on twitter now

"Hey Sophia is on twitter now. Follow her into the fireplace."

Or like John Simms

"Hey Simms is on twitter. Follow the master"

I liked the episode but I try and forget Myles was supposed to be De Pompedour since the character was paper thin and bland compared to how she comes across in the historical record. A limit to what you can do in 45 minutes though I guess, certainly Moffat never made the historical setting come alive. No problems with the actress coming back as another character though.
