Star Trek IV: TVH expanded score is out!

If they end up releasing an expanded score for Star Trek VI, (which I really hope they do) I pray they include Cliff Eidelman's score that was used in the second trailer for that film. It had a fantastic version of the fanfare when the title logo comes on.

I think the trailer department just took his score and edited it themselves when they made the second trailer. If the expanded release was done, you should have all the content you need to recreate the music as heard in the trailer.

Unless for some reason I forgot that there was music in the trailer that wasn't used in the film...

Nope, it was music he specifically composed for the trailer. I wish I had the interview to reference it (I think it was in a Starlog or a Film Score Monthly of the time), but I remember it well. And there are some bits on the trailer not found in the complete score floating around out there.

Yep, the score is unique to that trailer. Some of it is very similar to the final versions used in the film (the Holst inspired overture) but the Courage fanfare used at the end when "STAR TREK VI" appears is only heard in the trailer. It could be an earlier version of the "Sign Off" cue - either way it's great and I've always wanted that on a recording.

^Wasn't there some profanity in the song that young Jimmy Kirk played on the stolen sportscar's radio in the 2009 movie? Although I guess that wasn't included on the soundtrack album... was it?

I don't know. And no, it wasn't included on the soundtrack album (it probably would've cost too much).

It was "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys, and yeah there's profanity in it. Though I wonder how much a difference it would have been, cost-wise to include that song on the album? They already had it in the movie; then again, the album itself was marketed as the "score" so that probably had something to do with it.

The Beastie Boys song likely owned by different label than the label doing the film's soundtrack. The song could be licensed for the film, but not to re-release on another label. The cost likely wasn't worth it.

Although, to be fair, if the song was included, that probably would mean less of Michael Giacchino's fantastic score.

I just received this email:

Thank you for shopping at Intrada.
Your order has been fulfilled.
STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME Qty 1

Woo hoo!

I was out for the weekend but I came home to see this CD waiting for me. I'm not quite done listening to it but I'm enjoying the hell out of it! I was never the biggest fan of this score but I don't think I'm the only one who might be changing their opinion.

The music sounds great, the liner notes are great (writer Jeff Bond even interviewed Leonard Nimoy for this release), and I'm enjoying the alternate versions of the main title and The Whaler (which is where some of the European prologue music was sourced from).

There is also an interesting track titled "In San Francisco" - Leonard Rosenman had written some brief semi-comical cues for the crew's interactions, none of which made it into the film.

Mine says it has shipped; hopefully it will be here tomorrow or Tuesday.

Not that I need new music to listen to, as I got the Ron Jones TNG Box Set for Xmas, as well as the scores to Robinson Crusoe on Mars and The Thing from Another World through FSM...

Got mine in the mail today. Just opened it. Listening to it now. And... loving it.

Well done to all at Intrada and all those who made this album possible. :techman:

Just got it yesterday. It's by far the best of all the recent Star Trek complete soundtrack releases. And I'm not saying the others are bad. The addition of all the alternate tracks is great. I hope Intrada gets to release TMP with all its alternate tracks.

Looking forward to TUC, FC and GEN.

Its not a complete album. Those in the biz loathe it when something is officially or not labeled as "complete" because it just gives the really nitpicky nerds something else to bitch about.

Expanded is a better, industry-friendly term :)

That said, yes absolutely this album is fantastic. I've been enjoying it very much since getting it on Monday!

It's an excellent release, and it sounds great -- better than I remember the score sounding previously.

It was too bad the San Francisco clips weren't included in the movie. I was laughing through that track.

This was never one of my favorite Trek scores (or films for that matter) - actually it was my least favorite by a wide margin. As great as it is to have the remaining cues and alternates, my opinion hasn't really changed. The smaller bits are sometimes really good, other times not. It feels like TV scoring, with small cues to bridge scene changes or to underscore a quick dramatic line of dialog. I do very much like the more serious and adventurous material. However, I am not a fan of comedy music and there is a lot of it here. I never felt comedy needed obvious underscoring, but Rosenman does it here. He seems to be saying "this is FUNNY!" during the Hospital Chase or Chekov's Run. You could argue that "Run" isn't comedic as much as it is just character music, but an obvious Russian theme just stands out badly. It's much like the newly released music "In San Francisco," which is actually eye-rollingly on the nose as he gives Scotty a "Scottish theme" and Sulu an "Asian" theme - at the same time.

The spoofy martial drums during Kirk and Spock's antics are unnecessary. Obviously Nimoy agreed since none of this music made it to the final cut. Although I'm glad Rosenman overruled Nimoy's suggestion to use Gershwin in the street scenes; Nimoy's old fashioned take on the music probably would have been laughable (he seemed to forget many Trek fans were younger than he). The contemporary Jazz fusion of The Yellowjackets was more appropriate for the period.

Rosenman's version of the Alexander Courage Star Trek Theme for the unused opening titles is lacking punch and energy. It just sorta lies there. A wise cut.

"I Hate You" is hysterical and I am thrilled it's on the CD.

This was one of these times, since he scored so little of the film itself, that the original album was really good enough. However, the first two tracks of unreleased short cues, and the glissando over the Paramount logo make this one well worth the purchase for me. It's not "bad" music and you could say it works very well on album, but as "Star Trek" type scoring, it's odd-ball. I'm thrilled Nimoy was overruled for Trek III and Shatner got Goldsmith for V.

I've been in the minority for a long time. The Voyage Home was always my favorite score. My copy arrived yesterday afternoon and I'm really enjoying it. I like hearing the alternate cues to the opening and closing titles, plus hearing some music that never made it into the final cut. What I find interesting is some of the alternate versions of the music on the CD are played over Star Trek IV's prologue scene at the start of the movie.
