pets on star ships?

In The Child, Deanna's son spoke of a litter of puppies being in the class room. When Uhura brough her tribble on board the Enterprise, no one (initally) though there was anything wrong with doing so.

And there's Picard's fish.

:)

... And Alexander had a "Hissing Beetle". Deanna was tasked to feed it while he was visiting the grandparents during "Parallels'.

^Don't forget the flying horse at the end!

Targs resemble boars. Kruge's pet was totally different.

Chihuahuas are totally different to Great Danes, they're just different breeds of the same thing.

Just a different type of Targ.

No. Great Danes and Chihuahuas are way more like than Targs and that thing. You need a lesson in taxonomy if you think they might be different breeds.

The CGI artists made a real effort to give their ENT beasts the porcine appearance of the TNG original (or the cute DS9 fluffy toy), so we don't have to believe that Klingons would be interested in creating exotic-looking breeds of targ.

Sure, they once wanted to create exotic breeds of themselves, but when those came combined with exotic looks, they dropped the idea in disgust, and suffered in shame for a century...

On the issue of pets aboard Picard's ship, we should remember that the ship could comfortably house a pack of roaming wolves and a hefty number of horses. They could be given a spare deck or three, even. A thousand people fill barely a tiny corner of the immense saucer hull, and if a crew member wants to accommodate a largish pet, the least the Quartermaster can do for him or her is allocate spare quarters of "Relics" ilk for the purpose.

... And maybe provide a shovel or two as well - for when the inevitable happens.

According to the old TNG Technical Manual, weren't there dolphins on the Enterprise-D? And didn't one of them (an intelligent, alien dolphin.... which I guess wouldn't be a pet!) star in the novel "Dark Mirror"?

You're calling it a Targ just because it's Klingon. Not every Klingon animal is a Targ, not every Klingon drink is Bloodwine, not every Klingon meal is Gagh.

It would have been nice if the Enterprise would beam down all the dogs and cats down to a class m planet every now and then, let them stretch their legs and get some fresh air. Obviously it would have to be a federation planet so we don't contaminate another world.

Besides, "Targ" was coined in 1987 on TNG, a full 3 years after TSFS' premiere. Going back and fannishly retconning Kruge's pet into a Targ doesn't make it such to anyone but the person doing the retconning. I used to call it Kruge's Dino Dog, but I never insisted that was the real name of it. We don't know WHAT it is other than "Kruge's Pet."

Definitely just a fancy Targ.

Ohh okay..

First of all, the teeth of Kruge's pet clearly is of that a carnivore, while the targ teeth in that picture appears to be of an omnivore. Teeth don't vary that much in dogs beyond size (sometimes number of teeth due to compressed muzzle).

I'm calling it a Targ because it's a Targ. I don't call raktajino Bloodwine because it isn't Bloodwine.

But I do call Targs Targs.

I always carry my bijon into the worst neighborhoods, because who is gonna attack a cute little (loud) bijon. He's better than a pit bull in that regard. He's also a portable heater and a chick magnet (well, not really), but if Archer had encountered the evil Ruffians, he might have had to put Porthos in the command chair and hope for the best.
I'm sure my parrot is gonna appear as a character witness at my trial in the end and it's not gonna be pretty.

You're calling it a Targ because it's a Klingon animal and the only Klingon animal name we've ever been given is "Targ". Thus, you've decided every single Klingon animal is called a targ, no matter that it looks nothing like the targs we've actually seen.

Open your mind. My cat is not a dog. My cat has more in common with a dog than Kruge's pet has with a targ. It is still not a dog.

In the 'Official' blueprints for Enterprise-D (at least, the edition I have), there is quite a water maze within the ship specifically for its dolphin population.

And to the second, yes. As I recall, his name was Hwii, he was a respected scientist and held the Star Fleet Reserve rank of Commander. No mention of the above conditions on board, though - he came aboard for a short-term visit, was the only dolphin there, and Geordi had to rig up special quarters for him. Definitely NOT a pet, anyhow. Very good book, I thought.

They would have to limit it somehow. Imagine if everyone on a Vulcan ship brought their sehlat with them.

In the alternate timeline of "Yesterday's Enterprise" there is a Cetacean Ops. Perhaps there is one in the real timeline as well.
