pets on star ships?

Time for your medication?

Also, not a targ. And why the capital letter? We don't spell species names that way.

That's getting pretty old now, dontcha think?

Anyway, it's definitely a kurg. You know, the thing that eats targ for breakfast and then flosses with sehlat?

Besides, "Targ" was coined in 1987 on TNG, a full 3 years after TSFS' premiere. Going back and fannishly retconning Kruge's pet into a Targ doesn't make it such to anyone but the person doing the retconning. I used to call it Kruge's Dino Dog, but I never insisted that was the real name of it. We don't know WHAT it is other than "Kruge's Pet."

The SPFX guys on ST III called it Fifi Rebozo. The novelization called it Warrigul (Australian Aboriginal for dingo, which is a native dog.) A lot of publicity material called it a dog/lizard. When the "Star Trek Adventure" at Universal Studios was putting a child inside one, they were crediting the performer as playing the "puppy/lizard".

Surely, Kruge's pet has more in common with the snarling, white Rura Penthe "jackal/mastiffs" of ST VI than the boar-like Targ of TNG?

EDIT: Ha! I just checked Memory Alpha, and I now seem to recall adding to some of that article the last time the argument came up here.

Can we just call it the Beyonce and be done with it?
Have you tried calling Harve Bennett and asking him?
Whatever it was or wasn't, it has been reimagined since then and will be reimagined again and again until it turns out to be...

So far it's a targ.

Why would he call it a targ, though? Targs weren't even invented when ST III was filmed. It's some weird caninoid creature. Targs seem more porcine.

Surely the Klingon Empire is big enough to have more than one breed of half-domesticated animal?

Kruge's lizardlike pet (love the name Wurrigul, btw) had a forked tongue. The piglike targs do not.

I'd forgotten that Molly calls her toy targ "Piggy" in DS9. No one would she call Warrigul - or a white ST VI jackal/mastiff - "Piggy".

By the way, the pre-sculpt placeholder for ERTL's Klingon dog was this:

It eventually looked like this:

 - at both Lassie and at Scotty's waist!

That (final) Kruge pet looks really good - far, far better than the gold targ that came with the TNG Gowron (or was it Worf?) figure in the 90's.

^^^ Actually a very interesting idea. If you look at the the way the word "targ" has been used, "it is a targ," or "I had a targ," it could be interchangeable with "pet."

:)
