The comments about Cooper in the role of Lex echo pretty strongly with the comments made about Ledger as Joker when it was announced. And look how that turned out.

If anything it's the studio going, hey lets add that up and coming guy who's a big name in our other franchise into Man of Steel somewhere.
It's the ole "Hey lets add Eddie Murphey to the next Trek" schtick from the 80's that Paramount wanted to do.

...or, closer to home, "let's turn Superman III into a Richard Pryor movie."

That being said, Cooper doesn't seem like a bad actor. If he shaves his head and plays Lex as, well, Lex, I don't see a problem. If he goes on a "star trip," and insists on playing him with a full head of hair and a personality like an overgrown frat boy, that's a problem.

They use a tweet to debunk it though...and I don't recognize the person except they say he is respected in the industry. LOL. Take it with a grain of salt. I also did a google search and some other sites have picked up the rumour now but haven't confirmed it.
