DC's New 52: Reviews and Discussion (Spoilers welcolme and likely)

Still not enough to get me to pick up the title, after reading and disliking the first issue. I saw "The New 52" as a chance to ditch the deadwood in my pull list and both Legion titles convinced me it was time to part with them.

Which is sad, because I like the Legion in concept and I have liked previous takes on the team, as I've mentioned several times in this thread.

 

So essentially they have decided to spice up the title by getting a bunch geriatrics to write. Great idea DC.

 

Paul Levitz need to move on from the Legion and they need to get someone fresh while keeping the same roster. I decided to drop Legion Secret Origin...there's nothing really new in it even though this is what Paul stated one of the points.

 

It's not about "style," whatever the fuck that's supposed to be. It's about content. This version of Superman differs from the oldDC boy scout in major ways and it's way past damn time.

 

"Major ways" how so? Care to list some examples Dennis? I've been reading Superman pretty much consistently since Geoff Johns' run and I don't really see much difference. I dunno why you keep insisting the New 52 character is so drastically different or that he's somehow "better" when he really isn't. There have been a few surface changes and some adjustments to his back story, a redesigned suit, etc. Really not much different from what JMS, and company were doing before. As has been said glad you're enjoying the 52 Superman so much but it's not really too different from beforehand.

I will say that Grant Morrison has injected more fun in his Action Comics story that has been missing for a long time.

 

What JMS tried to do failed and was ultimately boring. Morrison succeeded. And we haven't even seen his present day version yet.

Again I'm talking about Superman in a general sense not just Morrison who I've stated is doing an outstanding job and has injected an enormous amount of fun. Perez has struck out in my opinion due to bad writing and awful dialogue. I can't wait to see when Action Comcis catches up to the present day 52'verse as I've stated many times in the thread already but in general I've not been blown away...and it's okay to disagree Hopefully Jurgens and Griffin can turn things around on "Superman". I want both Superman books to be interesting and fun, not just one.

 

Perez's dialogue is beyond terrible, but the characterizations of the relationships between Clark and his coworkers are fine. I'm enjoying his edginess and alienation in the face of the fact that the world and other people don't and never have played by the rules he believes they should.

 

But he soaked up Lana Lang's sexual energy and turned it into superpowers, leaving her withered and alone. That was pretty cool.

At this point, they might as well just give the thing to Christopher Bird and be done with it.

P.S. Chemical King sucks.

 

I'd have gone for Lana, myself. Especially in her MILFy incarnation.

 

I prefer Lori Lemaris. Sure, she's an abomination and has no identifiable, human genitalia, but she does have telepathy.

Well this is certainly the newest possible blood you could ever get. Christ almighty. Will he still be alive by issue 12? Goddamned boomers.

I mean, I guess he's "new" and "fresh" in the sense that he seems to have very little idea what the LSH is. Then again, at this point, neither do I. Objection waived.

 

Have you looked at the Superman comics that has been churned out post-Crisis? Outside of the long run by Byrne/Wolfman/Stern, which included some of the best Superman stories of the 80s and 90s, there has been very little good about the stuff that has followed. In fact I can say, there has been only a good handful of writers 1) Karl Kessel, 2) Jeph Loeb, 3) Joe Kelly and 4) Geoff Johns. That imo is a complete creative drought.

Look at Batman, in the same time frame, you have got incredible runs that even the comic created for the Animated Series has been great and even with Frank Millar's personal buttboy's personal attempt at sabotaging the books, you still had stuff like Winnick's Red Hood, Hush, etc.

 

Style as in storytelling approach. Compare Silver Age stuff to current stuff. Very different styles and approaches. As a writer yourself, I'm surprised you didn't pick up on that.

DC is approaching their stories the exact same way, yet you've previously implied (perhaps unintentionally) that New 52 is doing something new. Outside of rebooting stuff, they really aren't.

Which is obviously what I wasn't talking about.

Again, DC has been largely doing this for the past ten years. This is really no different and picks up on stuff that was already being done.

 

No human genitalia and telepathy would be a depressing combination from her POV, I'd think, in dealing with guys like Clark or Aquaman.

 

For this occasion I coin the phrase "love cloud."

Tomorrow's digital purchases (hopefully we're still doing this?): OMAC, Men of War, Action, Stormwatch, Batwing and possibly Hawk and Dove (but ONLY for the Deadman appearance - DC, just publish Deadman and Dove already. Nobody has ever cared about Hawk).

 

Well, there rumors were true, Gail Simone is leaving Firestorm and Joe Harris will step in to co-write with Ethan Van Sciver.

I'm unfamiliar with his work, but since I'm a Firestorm fan and am currently getting the title, I'll see how it goes. Despite my love for the character, I'm moving this to my watchlist for dropping, since I haven't been bowled over by the first few issues, but am pulling through because I am curious how they handle it. Unfortunately for me and my wallet, I tend to hang on to titles that are going through creative changes but that don't grab me a little too long. Especially with Teen Titans a few years ago, I hung on after Geoff Johns left to see how it would go and wasn't impressed, but every time I went to drop it, they kept announcing new creative teams, and I kept hanging on hoping that the new team would make it more interesting. I dropped while McKeever was writing, before what I understand was an unmitigated disaster of Felcia Henderson writing the title. I did come back when J.T. Krul took over and was finally rewarded with some decent stories in time for the book to be handed to Lobdell, who, as I said last week, is doing a better job that I was expecting from him on the book.

I guess I'm a sucker when it comes to, "Yeah, it sucks now, but it'll get better," whether it's waiting for a new creative team to start or giving the new creative team more issues than I should to "get their bearings."
