Just finished the series - Random thoughts

Hello all, As I mentioned in other posts I am a crazed fangirl who watched DS9 at 14. I never really got to finish the series as I went to college and such and life and blah blah blah. Anyway I have finally watched the series in its entirety and I have random reflections. Please feel free to agree or disagree, I just have to share so thanks for reading.

1. I like Martok better than Worf don't ask me why cause I really don't know

2. I like Ezri way better than Jadzia - there are too many reasons to list here

3. Kira is always going to be one of my favorite characters on television and Nana Visitor is just brilliant

4. Avery Brooks is an incredible actor! So much depth! I was totally moved by Sisko's character from beginning to end

5. "Take Me Out to the Holosuite" is a great episode

6. Vic Fontaine is a fantastic character!

7. I discovered I still have a mad crush on Siddig, considering I am married (happily) and in my 30s now, I am beginning to think that its time to let go

8. The Sisko,O'Brien, and Ferengi family storylines are one of the many many reasons that make DS9 far superior to any other Trek series.

9. I love the stories involving Cassidy Yates, Dukat, Winn, and Garak

10. The Defiant is AWESOME! (not up for debate)

These thoughts are in no particular order. Thank you for being so kind an welcoming as I recently joined this forum.

Welcome aboard! So...thoughts on Odo? Or Vic Fontaine?
2. I like Ezri way better than Jadzia - there are too many reasons to list here
Oh? Do tell! :)

Odo - I should have mentioned him, I can't believe I left him out. Rene is also an incredible actor. I was very impressed with him in Far Beyond The Stars and extremely glad that he had a huge role in that episode. I still don't know how the actor was able to express so much in all of that makeup! Odo's character always evoked emotion from me, I got so mad when he hooked up with female changeling, laughed when he picked on Quark, and smiled when he finally courted Kira.

Vic - he was a neat concept because lets face it the war was a downer. DS9 as a whole was serious, so I am very happy that the team got some downtime in a 60's Vegas lounge. I am also a huge fan of the Big Band music so it was always a treat for me.

Dax - Jadzia vs. Ezri - frankly I think Nicole is a better actress and pulled off Ezri very well. Terry had huge shoes to fill playing someone with the wisdom and knowledge of several lifetimes. I got the impression that she was trying too hard. Also, maybe I am not thrilled with Jadzia Dax and the way everyone accepted her as this wise and experienced person. She went through very little young women blues and in my opinion that takes something away from the character.

It might also be that Ezri reminds me a little of myself, minus the worm and eight lifetimes. When she says "Nothing come easy for Ezri" I totally identified, when she visited her family it almost felt like the writers had met my family without the murdering brother of course. She felt more realistic and Nicole De Boer obviously comes from a strong acting background.

Thank you for the welcome! :)

I have to agree with your first point ("I like Martok better than Worf don't ask me why cause I really don't know").

For me it was the contrast between the two characters. Worf was all about his House, honour, and the code of Klingon society. These things were central to Martok as well, but he tempered them with humour, laughter, and the ability to enjoy a party. He was not deadly serious all the time, and that made him more likeable to me.

1. I like Martok better than Worf
For the most part, I agree. Might be because of Worf-fatigue though. Eleven seasons of that guy?! Jeez! ;)

2. I like Ezri way better than Jadzia - there are too many reasons to list here
I like them both equally for totally different reasons, so I could never disagree with either choice. :)

3. Kira is always going to be one of my favorite characters on television and Nana Visitor is just brilliant
You have good taste.

4. Avery Brooks is an incredible actor! So much depth! I was totally moved by Sisko's character from beginning to end
Avery gets a lot of flack sometimes for being too wooden, which I just don't understand. Maybe his style just doesn't work for everyone? I think he's great. ...Except as himself, 'cause I never know what the heck he's talking about. :D

5. "Take Me Out to the Holosuite" is a great episode
Agreed.

6. Vic Fontaine is a fantastic character!
I dig his sound too, so...agreed.

...in my 30s now, I am beginning to think that its time to let go
Never! A celeb or character crush is not something you need to let go of. I still have ones from when I was 12. :)

...Maybe I should have just said "Agreed!" to the whole post, rather than point for point? For the rest of the list: Agreed. :)

I agree 100%! I had a photo taken with Jeffrey Combs at the Las Vegas convention, and when I last took a look through my album I found that my husband had labelled the picture "Shanndee's Boyfriend" So by all means...keep your crush, they're too much fun to let go!

If I haven't already welcomed you, then welcome to the boards. :)

1. I like Martok better than Worf don't ask me why cause I really don't know

I like them both. Worf is very ideological - he looks at everything as black and white, which makes for an interesting character. Martok is more practical - he's concerned with honor like Worf but is much more willing to have a good time.

2. I like Ezri way better than Jadzia - there are too many reasons to list here
Always good to welcome another Ezri fan! :techman: She's one of my favorite characters from the whole franchise. You'll find that Rush Limborg and myself are the TrekBBS's resident Nicole de Boer fanboys. :p

3. Kira is always going to be one of my favorite characters on television and Nana Visitor is just brilliant
Another one of my favorite Trek characters. :techman:

4. Avery Brooks is an incredible actor! So much depth! I was totally moved by Sisko's character from beginning to end
Brooks does get a lot of flack. I found his performance to be okay early on, but amazing once they let him open up and be more emotional.

5. "Take Me Out to the Holosuite" is a great episode
Agreed. Some people can't stand it, but I always thought it was a fun little diversion.

6. Vic Fontaine is a fantastic character!
I'll admit that I didn't like him at first, but he certainly grew on me. Now I really like him.

7. I discovered I still have a mad crush on Siddig, considering I am married (happily) and in my 30s now, I am beginning to think that its time to let go
Don't give it up for anything. I'm also in my 30s and still have a crush on Daphne from Scooby-Doo. Yeah.... I said it. :p

8. The Sisko,O'Brien, and Ferengi family storylines are one of the many many reasons that make DS9 far superior to any other Trek series.
The family storylines are amazing, but I have to disagree on the Ferengi ones. I simply can't stand Ishka. The Ferengi episodes without her are manageable, however.

9. I love the stories involving Cassidy Yates, Dukat, Winn, and Garak
Agreed again. Something else that gets a lot of flack is the Dukat/Winn storyline in Season Seven (and the Dukat arc following the end of Sacrifice of Angels), but I absolutely loved it and thought both storylines were perfectly in keeping with their characters.

10. The Defiant is AWESOME! (not up for debate)
Very true.

I agree with all of your points. Though while I don't have a crush on Siddig (I'm sure he's attractive, but men don't float my boat) I would agree that Bashir is a great character and I loved how he developed and matured during the course of the series.

defiantfan, as you have a crush on Bashir and are a fan of Ezri...I can strongly recommend my tales in the Fanfic forum.

"From Risa With Love" is a Bashir-centric tale, set around the latter days of the DS9-Relaunch. It's in the style of a James Bond adventure....

Heck--I have a crush on Nicole de Boer!
That's awesome!

Thank you and the Ferengi episodes weren't always my favorite, but the emphasis on family is important to me. I totally get your point.

You raise a good point, maybe I like Martok because of Worf. Deep thoughts

LOL Truth!

Will do!

Thank you all for the love :)

Definitely agree with #3. I barely remembered any of DS9 until I recently re-watched it on Netflix, and I was constantly impressed with Nana Visitor's portrayal of Kira. I don't understand why she doesn't do more things.

There are not too many women who can pull off the kind of character she did.

This might also sound odd, but I was very intrigued by Kira's constant use of the word "terrorist" to describe herself. Until my re-watch this last month, I hadn't see DS9 since before 9/11, and the word "terrorist" has come to have such a dramatic connotation in this country since then. If DS9 had been produced in a post-9/11 world, I wonder if they would have thrown that word around as much as they did.

I thought about that too, I really wonder how many changes they would have made had this been post 9/11. Would they have made the "Defiant" episode involving the capture of a Federation ship for Maquis purposes? Would they have "negotiated" so often with the Romulans, Cardassians, and even the Vorta? Would they have hired an actor that of Arab descent and never mention the character's background? Loads of questions in my head really.

I find it refreshing in this post-9/11 world to see an Arab actor/character just taken for granted.

Excellent points made, and welcome to the forum!

DS9 isn't my favorite Star Trek series, but it does have some of my favorite episodes from the franchise. Definitely.

I agree with most of your points and feel similarly about Worf as Tosk and Admiral Shran summed him up. Although Worf was a little tiring in the sense that we have the same prominent character continuing on from TNG to DS9 (it was easier for O'Brien to make the shift, as he didn't get much screen time in TNG), it was great to see him evolve. At times I tired of him, but most of the time it was great having him around.

As for Sisko, Avery did indeed grow into the role. He gave some amazing performances in the latter half of the series. I can't understand why anybody wouldn't like him.

I never really warmed up to either Dax or Ezri... just didn't find their characters well written enough.

Nana Visitor is definitely underrated. She gave some phenomenal performances in DS9, and to me was one of the critical parts of the show.

Rene Auberjonois didn't have much claim to fame outside of Benson prior to doing DS9. I thought it an odd choice casting him. But wow... did that actor embrace the role. I also agree he was phenomenal... just as critical as Kira to the success of DS9.
