Benicio Del Toro to be the villain in the Star Trek sequel?

Anyone remember this rumor: http://trekmovie.com/2010/10/25/rumor-no-khan-for-star-trek-sequel-but-known-tos-villain/ ?

If there was actually any bit of truth to it, most of these could be ruled out.

Obviously he's not Horta. He doesn't have the right build for a Talosian.

He could be Mudd, but I think that's stretching it. His typical roles don't really line up with that character. Trelane is kind of the same way.

Mitchell is probably the most likely of that group, but even still that doesn't seem appropriate.

So I guess that rumor is likely busted, Faraci?

I believe that same "informant close to the production" told AICN how he saw footage of Trek 2009.

Even though they could do weird shit with the Talosians, and Abrams, Lindelof & Co like weird shit, don't they?

Devin Faraci may not be the most reliable of sources. I think I'd treat anything coming from that quarter with a certain degree of skepticism.

would Del Toro agree to use a Klingon mask and spend hours and hours in a makeup chair?

Abrams had no hesitation in throwing out the Romulan ridges, I can see his Klingons being closer to TOS looks, or better yet a mix of ridged and non-ridged (get some Ford style Klingons going on, multiple races comprising an empire kind of thing.)

The issue with the Romulan ridges was, there was no reason they should have developed them in a couple thousand years separated from the Vulcans. It was just the TNG fascination with forehead ridges.

I preferred the ridged Klingon heads to the smooth ones and had no problem with the ENT explanation.

As far as Benicio in a role, sounds like a good idea. I'm just glad he's no longer involved in that abortion of a 3 Stooges movie.

The AV Club knows what we want.

According to Variety, Benicio Del Toro is director J.J. Abrams’ top choice to play his next Star Trek villain, whoever that might be. Even Del Toro apparently doesn’t know, as Abrams’ paranoid secrecy has reportedly led to him meeting with the actor about taking on the role but never explaining fully who it is—which must have been sort of daunting for Del Toro. After all, that’s how you find yourself in a giant space sombrero playing The Andromeda Bandito, the rootinest, tootinest outlaw this side of the universe. Still, assuming J.J. Abrams isn’t crazy, Del Toro’s role probably won’t be that.

Doubtful it'll be Mitchell, since he appeared in the recent NuTrek comic. I suspect that his character would have been nixed by TPTB if they were going to use him in Trek 12.

Honestly, I am actually really excited for the prospect to have Mr. Del Toro in Star Trek. I am an admirer of his work and find that he brings with him a sort of intensity and reserved demeanor that could easily suit a villainous role. Bana's Nero seemed kind of like Rocky Balboa in his portrayal (his mouth was doin' funky things whenever he spoke), so I am excited to see what Del Toro (could possibly) bring to the role. Nero was kinda... one dimensional despite the whole revenge plot device.

Yes! NuKahn! I can't wait! Or a klingon, but I really prefer nuKahn as the next villain.

Abrams would not kill Kor or Koloth. They are classic characters.

It's Abrams' movie and he can do whatever he wants with them. Even if these characters were in ST XII and were killed it's an alternate universe and has no affect on prime Kol or prime Koloth.

Time to get back on the boards. I love speculation! It gives all of us a chance to show how brilliant we all are. ;)

Is it bad to say that based just on how he looks, especially with a beard, I'm hoping Del Toro plays a Klingon? Kor, Koloth, someone new. Doesn't matter. It just seems to make sense (to me, anyway) that with the crew brought together in the first movie, the second movie would establish Kirk's primary atagonist or (dare I use the word) nemesis.
Playing Kirk off against a worthy opponent with his own principles and motivations could be very high concept thematically or in the nature of the conflict. Like "Errand of Mercy" or "Balance of Terror". And, the character does not have to die (or even be in a big overt space battle with Kirk) to resolve the conflict.

Wasn't something said ages ago that the villain in this movie would not be the crazed Nero or even Khan-type?

I think Khan has been a red herring as the villain. The problem with reprising Khan is everything about what made him such a great villain in TWOK hinged on events that do not apply at all in the JJ-Verse. There was a past between Kirk and Khan that mattered. Time mattered. TWOK worked on themes of aging (Kirk), vengeance (Khan), and sacrifice (Spock).

Wait until we all find out that Del Toro will be playing a horta. ;)

That past is still ( potentially ) in the future of STXI. The Abramsverse is only different from the past of the Prime after 2233, which should mean that the Botany Bay is out there somewhere waiting to be discovered. If nuTrek was going to do Khan, it would likely start as a rehash of Space Seed rather than a rehash of TWOK. Even the STXI DVD commentary seems to imply as much.
