here's my favorite version of her outfit from the comics.

Red-haired Scarlett Johansson? Goddess.

In the first pic above is she wearing body paint? Why can you see her belly button?

I think the debate about the costume is... odd.

I mean aside from variations of material, neckline and belts and such how is the movie version any different than the comic version? It's a black, body-hugging, jumpsuit in all versions.

Re: AVENGERS - movie Discussion, News, Interviews, Pics till release 2

I cant help but feel this discussion is only an excuse to post pictures. I mean is anyone really going to be sitting in the cinema (watching Avengers) moaning that Black Widows costume is wrong by some small detail?

If people are going to do that, could they please not do that whilst I am in the cinema. Scarlett Johansson looks stunning and the costume seems to be basically correct, anything beyond that seems pointless.

As I said in the Young Justice thread, each movie, comic or TV series is its own corner of the DC (or Marvel) verse, and should use the characters based on whats best for it.

This also applys to Superman Returns, a good or bad costume does not make or flop a movie. Avengers is going to be MASSIVE, nitpicking Black Widows costume does not seem worthwhile to me.

However if this thread is an excuse to post pictures, carry on.

Plus, I think the Batman, X-Men and other movies have shown that movie-makers can make a superhero costume that's different from the one in the comics and it doesn't mean that the world comes to an end.

Come think of it why be so accepting of the fact that Nick Fury is black, and then go nitpicking the outfits worn by the cast.

I dont know if Samuel L Jackson is the first Black Fury, but im sure the character has been white in the vast majority of comic book history.

Re: AVENGERS - movie Discussion, News, Interviews, Pics till release 2

Fury is white in the original Marvel Universe and black in the Ultimate Universe, bar one or two anomalous appearances early on where it was the MU Fury. (Originally I think they were going to make Ultimate Captain America black.)

In an early issue of The Ultimates there's a scene where most of the characters discuss who would play them in a movie, and Fury (who already looks exactly like SLJ) says that in his case it's not even open for discussion; Samuel L Jackson is the only choice. Mark Millar isn't exactly the most anti-commercial writer you could imagine. :)

Just read this article, looks like SLJ was cast with good reason, but its still a much bigger change anything that can be done to a costume.

Her costume is hardly the worst; Cap's a disaster.
My issue is not that they have to adhere to the exact specs of the comic, it's that the move away from "superheroey" costumes bespeaks a certain lack of faith in the source material. It's no coincidence that those films that really capture the spirit (note, not the letter) of their sources are the most successful - Superman the Movie, Spiderman.... even Thor, while not successful critically, really captured the look and spirit of Jack Kirby's work.
When a movie is embarrassed by its very premise, it cannot succeed.
I'm not saying that's the case with this Avengers movie; I don't know enough about it. But moving away from the costumes is one of the hallmarks.

of course it maybe a symptom of a movie that isnt going to match the source material, but its not a problem all by itself.

I have yet to see the Captain America movie, but I understand the Howling Commandos were in it, minus Nick Fury. This is the much bigger issue to me. Now, if Fury were among the HC, then his color would certainly be an issue, as a black sergeant leading white troops in WWII would be noteworthy.

On the other hand, if Fury is relegated to SHIELD (Supreme Headquarters International Espionage Law Enforcement Division, damn it!), then his color is irrelevant. His background isn't important.

The X-Men series not using spandex was met with near-universal approval.

if I understand the situation correctly
there is really no reason why Nick Fury would be involved with "Howling Commandos" seen in the movie, given that they appeared in the 40s, were hand picked by Captain America, and Fury would not yet have been born.

This is a prime example of "use the comics to fit your story" not fit your story around the comics.

Never mind Nicky Fury being black, he wasnt even alive to lead it. I wont lie I thought we might see a little more of Fury in the Captain America movie, but we didnt.

'kay, thanks for that. My mistake; not the MU Fury but a little more like him than the SLJised version is.

Re: AVENGERS - movie Discussion, News, Interviews, Pics till release 2

Yeah, I don't think the Nick Fury in the movies has the semi-immortality that comics Nick Fury has. Without that, there'd be no reason for him to be in WWII since they introduced him modern-day.

As for SHIELD's name, SHIELD has changed its' name a few times in the comics so changing it again for the movies is no big deviation.

Heck, if they want to include aliens like the Skrulls and Kree they should go ahead and introduce SHIELD's sister organization SWORD (Sentient World Observation and Response Department).

that feels like something that could form as and when its needed, or possibly grow our of a small department of the current S.H.I.E.L.D.
