Watching Voyager for the first

I've seen every Star Trek series except Voyager. I've loved them all even Enterprise. I've only gotten as far the The Cloud and it's pretty good but I must know. Will Neelix get better? I can't remember the last time a TV character has infuriated me so much! I can't stand him and every scene with him makes want to throw something at the TV! Will he improve? Or am doomed to 7 seasons of this?

Ah, new Star Trek for you. I'm envious!

I enjoy Voyager's first season. The Starfleet/Maquis divide is pretty much lost as a concept after a couple of episodes, but besides a couple of duds, the first season is pretty good. I'm rewatching the show at the moment so I've had the pleasure of seeing all this again.

Neelix is a pain. The first season is probably where he's best defined, unfortunately, and he goes downhill from here. I'd hoped that his moment in Parallax, where he questions the Starfleet way of stopping off at every nebula, would have evolved him into some better. Really wasn't the case though.

Inspite of this though, he usually had one emotionally involving episode a season, which is a pretty amazing record for such a horrible character.

I disagree. Neelix was fairly one dimensional during season one (mostly due to Kes), but once he shook loose that burden, he really opened up during later seasons. He has several defining episodes throughout the series.

I know a lot of people love to hate on Neelix, but he's by far not the worst character on Trek.

I agree, beyond the first season when it's not so much Kes/Neelix his character gets better and they both actually start to become individuals and thus makes for a better Neelix and Voyager for that fact. I had the same feeling towards Neelix when I first started watching it but now he's not so annoying. He will grow on you, trust me, but there will ALWAYS be a small part of you that will be really annoyed by him. That's just his character, can't change that lol, he's Neelix.

Ah yes, I remember my first time...the anticipation, the anxiety, finally understanding all the innuendoes...

Anyway,

Both of these sum up my response as well. Also, and I've mentioned it before in other threads, I love the friendship Neelix and Tuvok end up forming.

Neelix wasn't really annoying until season two. Apart from the excess of gaseous anomalies, the first two seasons are pretty good, season three is where the shit hit the fans for me. Just don't expect to see more of anything interesting besides the Kazon.

Oh, and Neelix does improve, just not until season four to five.

Okay, to be fair, Neelix does become more tolerable, but I think it's only because the writers toned him down a bit, and because he didn't get as much screen time.

Like I said before, he's an odd one. Despite his annoying tendancies, I love Jetrel, Fair Trade, Mortal Coil, Once Upon a Time, Riddles and Homestead, which are all Neelix-heavy episodes. I also find it ironic that Neelix had the best sendoff of all the characters! :D It's just a shame that the writers couldn't have made him this interesting throughout the entire show. I understand why they shied away from him though, after his misuse in the first couple of seasons.

The 3rd season episode Rise is probably my favorite Neelix episode. It shows him portraying a skill that no one else possesses, which ultimately saves them all. I was a little disappointed that they added a plot point of him lying about his knowledge, but I suppose that's in character for Neelix (he never wants others to know that he doesn't know the answer), and he still saves the day. It's also when he starts to gain Tuvok's respect.

This is similar to his actions in Fair Trade. It also influences his coaching of Harry Kim in Nightingale, when he provides the feedback that a captain always has the answer, regardless if its right, and never shows wavers or shows uncertainty.

I don't know if i found him less annoying over the 7 years but I think I learnt to tolerate him more!

Never had a real problem with Neelix, personally.

.... Though I agree that both he and Kes became more interesting when they were no longer a couple.

Actually, I quite enjoyed how he would keep driving Tuvok nuts with one thing or another.
