The BBC has confirmed what a lot of folks had expected, that the fifth and final season of the Sarah Jane Adventures will debut in the UK on Oct. 3 after Doctor Who finishes its 6th season on the 1st:

Looks like they're sticking to the traditional 2 episode a week format, so with only 6 episodes it's going to be a short season. Presumably here in North America we won't see it till the DVD comes out, presumably sometime in 2012 (Series 4 has yet to be released over here, though from what I hear it will not include Season 5 as well).

I've still gotta see Series 2-4 (SyFy only showed Series 1). I've watched the Death of the Doctor and Sarah Jane's wedding on YouTube, but, that's it, other than Series 1.

But, hey, that means I've got 3 1/2 seasons that will be almost all new to me :techman:

Exactly, and the first 3 seasons are on DVD so you should be able to get caught up. The 4th season comes out on DVD over here early in the New Year, and presumably Season 5 will follow later in 2012.

I could easily obtain Season 4 (and 5 when it airs) through the usual methods, but I'm content to wait for the DVD as I treat these as bonuses (OK I confess I didn't wait for Death of the Doctor!).

I'm both looking forward to the new episodes and deeply saddened. I watched Babelcolour's tribute video on YouTube again last night and was bawling by the end.

I wonder if they'll do a complete show boxset next year. I'd definitely buy it.

Problem is, the DVD's are the usual over-the-top BBC pricing method.

I had the S1 DVD's, but there was some sort of glitch with one of the discs. I never got around to getting that set again after I returned them.

Maybe with some of my profit sharing check later in the year....

Any plans to do SJA on blu-ray?

I thought the prices were fine. Now charging $40-50 Cdn for the 3 episodes of Sherlock - that was a bit much (and I've never bought the set as a result). $30 for a season of Sarah Jane works for me. Presumably Series 5 will be considerably less expensive, while if the Series 4 set is the same in Region 1 as it is in the UK, it'll include Pyramids of Mars as a bonus and that's a $24.95 value right there by Canadian pricing.

The UK release of Series 4 is supposed to be both DVD and Blu-ray. Apparently Series 3 was shot in high-def too but they only did a DVD release. No word as to whether the North American release of Series 4 will be out on Blu-ray (but expect the usual highway robbery markup for that one, if price is an issue). Presumably Pyramids of Mars will be presented in standard def, because the upconversion of a classic-era story shot in the usual film/video mix of the 1970s would be big news.

One other thing to watch for: considering 2 Entertain has put out box sets including a complete David Tennant era set (it comes out in a couple months), and a "catch up" set of the first 3 seasons of Torchwood, I'm assuming that sometime next year there'll probably be a "complete series" set for Sarah Jane. If they do that, it might be a good excuse for them to do Blu-rays of the first 3 seasons (upconverting Seasons 1 and 2 the way The Next Doctor was upconverted for the Specials blu-ray).

^ Correct me if I'm wrong (like I need to ask that ;)) but SJA eps are roughly half the length of a DW eps., right?

And there's 12 of these half length episodes per series, so basically half as much total time as DW series'.

I would hope they weren't as expensive as whole series' of DW, but even at $30, they would seem to be as expensive per/hour as DW, give or take.

DW has been starting out around $50 per series (pre-order), with the claim of $90+ for the regular price.

One of the main reasons I usually wait a few years to buy any BBC disks. Or else pick them up used off Amazon.

But yes, its going to feel strange watching brand new SJA's knowing Liz isn't with us anymore. I'm really curious though if they're going to do any sort of series wrap up, or just have it stop after the third story. The series has never been big about doing anything special for season finales.

Sarah-Jane eps are 30 minutes as oopposed to the 45min typical length of a Who episode. and they are 10 or 12 episodes a season.

So? I buy based on quality, not quantity. I spent $25 once on a copy of David Lynch's animated series Dumbland which had a total running time of about a half hour. And $30 is only a few dollars more than the average price of individual classic Doctor Who stories, some of which consist of only 4 half-hour episodes. And not all of them have extensive extras. I have my limits (repeating my earlier note regarding Sherlock) but I'm willing to pay $30 for Sarah Jane, especially since the episodes are, in addition to everything else, brand-new to me having never seen most of them. As opposed to buying anything from Doctor Who or Torchwood which I'd already seen on TV. If anything, value for money is increased with SJA because it isn't being shown over here (or if it is, it's on some pocket network I don't receive).

Alex

And yet some folks not in the U.K. will mysteriously have seen the episodes shortly after they air.

I actually read that as some folks in the UK will mysteriously have seen the episodes...I was about to point out that that wouldn't be particularly mysterious

I agree with the "quality" statement, I own all the DW.

The bitch is, why are we paying twice as much for half the minutes as pretty much anything else?

It's greed. The blu-rays (at least) are distributed by WB in America, so they're not "imports".
