"historical" episodes of The Vampire Diaries?

Bumping to see if Temis has watched the end of season 1 - beginning of season 2.

I need to know whether to try this thing on my friend Toad or not! :)

I've caught up thru "Masquerade."

I appreciate the improvements to Caroline and Tyler, who till they were supernatural-ed, were eminently skip-able. Here's hoping they don't get killed off too quickly - that does seem to be the fate of non-main characters in their shoes - but being in the opening credits should provide some defense against that.

I'm finding Katherine and Isobel to be pretty damn boring. I dislike one-note "I'm a big bitch" type characters. Isobel no doubt will get staked pretty soon but Katherine is too integral to the central conflict for her to die without something changing.

I'm staking (no pun intended) my hopes on the mystical connection between Katherine and Elena leading to a situation where their personalities merge into one body (is the point of Elena looking identical that she's a way for a vampire to jump bodies? is there a time limit to how long a vamp can live in one body?) That way, at least more Katherine will automatically mean less Elena. Funny how my two least favorite characters in this show are played by the same actress. :rommie: And this show could use a Jeckyl/Hyde character.

Stefan is a bit of an idiot, his Katherine problem is easy to solve. Clearly, she's incapable of loving anyone but herself, so her obsession with Stefan is caused by the fact that he never loved her, and that tweaks her ego.

That's the same reason she kicked Damon to the curb - seducing a pushover does nothing for her ego. Stefan should just start acting like Damon did back in the day, and Katherine will kick him to the curb, too. I guess that issue is moot for now since she's locked up in a tomb rather than dead, gee I wonder if she'll get out.

All the convoluted mythology is fun - here's a doohickey, there's a curse, this is how it all fits together. It's just a big rube goldberg of a plot, but it breaks the tedium between musical montages (which I always skip - I react to that style of teenybopper music like a vamp reacts to verbain). I liked the detail of the moonstone curse being Aztec - nicely imaginative, will we get flashbacks to ancient Mexico? - but if they'd made it Mayan, they could have tied it in with the end of the world next year. :D

And I've been meaning to ask, is there some reason that all witches in this show are black? Are they all members of some extended family descended from a certain progenitor back in 17th C Salem? I noticed that Gena Torres looks a lot like the witch who turned out to be related to Bonnie - another long-lost cousin?

I was in the same boat Temis. Caroline and Tyler lacked purpose until season 2. I actively hated Caroline in season 1 and was pretty meh on Tyler. Their storylines were a great addition to season 2.

Katherine's motivations will be explained a bit more.

Isobel always left me cold. I never really felt compelled by the actress.

I loved how the curse, doppelganger and all things began to swirl together in season 2.

Your questions is dealt with somewhat. We do see more people with the same capabilties. Certain persons and/or places are in common. However, I think some of that is on the slate of things to come...

More questions, are these addressed in S2? Is it possible for a witch or werewolf to become a vampire? Does this show adhere to the "rule" of a werewolf bite turning a person into a werewolf? Is werewolf blood poisonous to vampires, because that would be cool. :rommie:

Just. Keep. Watching. :D

Yes, you will find those answers in S2

I'm liking Caroline and Tyler as a couple, nice Romeo & Juliet thing going there. It would drive Damon nuts, not that it's any of his beeswax. Also, Caroline can't have kids but I sincerely doubt Tyler would want to - passing on the curse and all (that explains why werewolves are practically extinct) - so they should get married. That's what this show needs, a big fancy wedding where all hell breaks loose! :rommie:

The mythology is getting kind of redonkulous now, with the original vampires, dopplegangers, curses requiring a whole circus to do or undo, and what have you. My theory is that the original vampires are aliens. Or maybe they were invented by some Aztec priest who drank a little too much mescal.

You'll get that/those answer(s) by the end of Season

I did not care for Tyler and Caroline as seperate characters but I love them together, so go figure. :rommie:

They will explain a lot of what you are asking Temis:
1. Original Vampires - Where did they come from?
2. How you become a werewolf?
a. Why are there so few werewolves?
3. How you become a vampire?
4. Why the two don't seem to get along -
a. Who trumps who in might/fight
b. Who is the more dangerous...
5. What the curse and doppelganger are all about.

I was really suprised by how well the show kept up its different threads and really tried to anwer its own questions.

They hid the moonstone in a basket of soap? Even Scooby-Doo would know better than that. Why can't they hide it in a barrel of vervain or just go bury it in the woods? What's Katherine going to do, dig up the whole woods?

The basket of soap would be a clever and ironic stratagem if Katherine were well known for her slovenly habits. But she doesn't appear to be noticeably dirty and even complained about being dirty in the tomb.

I just took it as a nice throw back to Damon's comment. He said something along the lines of thank God we got the soap back.

I had always thought it looked like a bar of glycerin soap so I laughed my backside off.

I could not decide if it was too silly for words or devilishly awesome.
