I'll take CGI over matte paintings any day.
You realize the original mattes were still there? Just cleaned up and extended with CGI.

I suspected that was the case but I wasn't sure. I still prefer the CGI enhanced mattes over the originals though. If anything, Remastered Trek didn't go far enough. Newer isn't always better, but more often then not, it is.
I didn't care for the CG design of the planet-killer either. I've seen better done by CG hobbyists.
I don't say that often, much as I admire a lot of the CG you do see online.
"The Doomsday Machine" in general was one of the Remastered episodes that disappointed me. It's hard to say which was my favorite - probably "The Menagerie" or "Amok Time." I admired what they did on COTEOF but it was mostly subtle clean-up and corrections of things like matte lines, etc, and didn't make a distinct difference in the experience of watching it.
I found DDM mostly "okay," but the strafing run just made me go![]()
An aside that has nothing to do with the remastering or the CGI: It occurred to me watching DDM a few years ago, that the E and the Constellation would have probably been perfectly safe if they'd stayed BEHIND the goddam thing. It obviously couldn't turn very fast!![]()

^^^Different styles of fake. Neither looks real. In 20 years they'll both look equally as laughable.
