Personally I like the new movie suit and the way Cavill looks in it just fine.

That nails it. Looks wrong without the shorts. The added red creates a better visual balance.

Maybe the suit is some sort of organic-tech thing? I'm trying to think what the non-buckle does - maybe he presses that and the suit morphs to/from his street clothes, or emerges / retracts somehow?

I think this demonstrates that at least for this design the new suit looks better without the red trunks.

That's awesome. He actually looks powerful, unlike Routh. Sorry Routh fans.

The difference is in the way they padded the biceps and other areas.

If the Superman Returns suit was designed differently Routh could have looked like Cavill's Superman

The suit just downplayed the muscle definition.

All of this banter about the costume. Rao...I can only imagine what is going to happen when we really have something significant to talk about like when the plot is finally revealed. Or the first poster, or teaser trailer (which I suspect probably won't happen until the new year sometime).

Agreed. Of all the looks there, the official one looks the best to me. The brighter blue looks too comic booky, and the trunks just look silly-- at least on this particular suit.

Heh, those altered pictures, the ones with the added bangs, makes him look quite a bit like Ben Browder.

Moving on from the costume topic for a moment...since this is an origin story I was worried we wouldn't see much of Superman in costume and action until near the end of the film. Despite the pictures of Supes in his suit I am more hopeful that this will be more than a pure origin story and we will see more of Superman in action that I had feared.
