The Internet Reacts to the Upcoming 'The Wizard of Oz,' 1939

Yep. It's dead on.

This one caught my eye:

I don't care what the haters say, TWOO looks epic. Judy Garland is hot, the action scenes look incredible. This is gonna be a favorite for decades, especially for heterosexual men.

Even funnier: if you go back and read some of the original newspaper reviews, they weren't all the different. How dare they turn Baum's beloved classic into some vulgar Hollywood musical? And a Cowardly Lion with a Brooklyn accent and plenty of vaudeville schtick? Disgraceful!

Seriously, as far as some scandalized reviewers were concerned, Lahr's Cowardly Lion was the Jar Jar Binks of 1935 . . . .

I heard that some critics hated Artoo and Threepio when ANH was first released. They were considered characters solely aimed at children. Doesn't that remind you of anything?

It makes you wonder how The Phantom Menace will be thought of in 70 years...

Pretty much like it is now, if it's thought of at all. Not everything improves with time. ;)
Unless of course the first world turns into drooling idiots due to the build-up of food additives in our diet. Then, it could look like Citizen Kane.

They changed Dorothy's silver shoes to ruby slippers!! It's like they're TRYING to ruin my childhood!!

Thank God! Thank God I'm not the only one who thinks this way. Let's face it folks - a true classic is royally FUCKED!

:)

And yet now, according to my friends who have done stage versions of The Wizard of Oz, the Cowardly Lion is the one character where you're pretty much required to play it exactly the same way that Lahr did. You get a certain amount of leeway with Dorothy, Scarecrow, & Tin Man but audiences are very quick to revolt if you don't exactly replicate Lahr's Lion performance.
