SW blu-rays have changes to the films again

would'nt george be grooming his children to take control of buisness aspects of skywalker ranch and star wars franchise?

When you think about the buisness mind of Lucas as opposed to the creative side, releasing the original trilogy as they originally appeared in the cinema in 1977-1983 would make sense; people would buy them.

Well, on the bright side, Lucas isn't immortal. He's going to eventually pass to the great canteen in the sky, and when he does whoever ends up with control of SW will probably have no emotional stake in seeing the originals released and thus will do so.

I don't think I'm the only one who has become extremely jaded after the special editions, the prequels, constant edits and "enhancements", and the constant fights and flame wars among the fanbase to the point where I honestly do not care for Star Wars one iota. Lucas could release the originals in super high-def 15532p resolution 3d where the characters literally pop out of the screen and slap the viewer around a bit, and I wouldn't buy it.

Indeed. I really have no interest in Star Wars anymore. If anything, I've grown to dislike it a bit.

Why? Just because their his children? I would hate to be his kid. "But, I want to be a doctor!" "NO, you're going fucking take over this kiddie empire and you're going to fucking love it!"

I like it. sort of how there are four different versions of The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, (radio, tv, book, movie), but Douglas Adams made efforts to ensure that all four of them told the story differently!:guffaw:

Personally, I disagree with anyone who says that Lucas has made any truly significant changes to any of the OT. Just minor stuff that only the geekiest of the geeks will complain about.

Take the Greedo scene for instance. No matter who shot first, Han still killed a man in a public place, calmly stood up, stared down the crowd, tossed the bartender some coin and apologized for the mess and calmly walked out as if it were an everyday occurance. That still more than sufficiently establishes Han as a badass.

I don't mind color corrections or adding in new digital characters in the background. I don't mind sound corrections either. I certainly don't mind them fixing Yoda from TPM, that has always bothered me. What I do mind is the the ridiculous and unnecessary extra scenes with the new digital character we never saw before ie. Jaba's palace. The minor tweaks are fine and I would argue needed for blue ray, but all the other bullshit is just that, bullshit.

Hey.. i'll bite

While he still comes off as a badass after the revision as you said him shooting first added a totally different level to his character. In the new version it was self defense.. Greedo may have gotten more money from Jabba if he captures Solo alive but dead would be fine too so we didn't know if he'd actually kill Solo.

However Solo didn't wait for Greedo to decide his fate and just shot him on the spot thus displaying the whole creed and vibe of Star Wars' underworld.. be first or be dead. The new version is kid friendlier and not as controversial (the same reasoning why Spielberg exchanged shotguns to walkie talkies in ET but i've never heard Lucas explaining why he changed his scene) but it also took away a bit from Han's character.

While the latter scenes and movies do show him as compassionate and decent under all his rogue exterior we also knew that he could be ruthless if the situation called for it making him, at least to me, a more "real" and well rounded character with edges and some darker aspects.

Not to mention the most obvious reasons.. Lucas most likely wanted to "sanitize" Star Wars and make it more kid friendly and a hero who shoots some guy in cold blood just doesn't fit in there.

There's that ansd Greedo - a bounty hunter- showing Storm Trooper levels of aiming and just the very horrible way Han "dodges" the shot.

Though, we never, EVER see him be that ruthless ever again. So, one could argue, Lucas was making Han more consistent.

Precisely. I've never had a strong preference one way or the other regarding the various editions of the original trilogy. I can probably pick individual moments that work better in one edition or the other if I think about it (by default, CGI Jabba in A New Hope works better on the 2004 DVDs than the 1997 Special Edition, for example), but mostly it's not a big deal.

As far as the notorious Han-shooting-Greedo business goes, Lucas' excuse that they didn't have the time or money to insert the last blast showing Greedo firing is at least plausible - watching the original blast, one doesn't actually see Han's muzzle flare either. But it was added a trifle awkwardly in the special edition, was improved in the 2004 DVDs, and is not profoundly upsetting to me either way it's done.

Oh, and replacing the Phantom Menace Yoda with a CGI equivalent is long overdue, if anything. That puppet was distinctly inferior to both the puppetry of the original trilogy and the CGI model of the subsequent films, and the clip I've seen of the re-CGIed Yoda... just reacts bloody better than the puppet did.

I agree that most changes to the OT have been minor, at worst they unnecessarily change the flavor of scene. However the original Han / Greedo scene did change an aspect of character development

I dunno man, let's throw Andy Serkis back in the mocap suit and start working on a CGI Harrison Ford, grab some voice acting from whoever did the best job of Han in the various video games? Radio dramas? Cartoons? Wherever!

George, there is work to be done!

I've only even owned Star Wars twice:

- The VHS release in the late 90s (silver box, widescreen edition I think). Didn't watch it that often, sold them eventually.

- The DVD release in 2007 with the Special Editions and the original editions, which i still own.

I don't own a Blu-Ray player yet, so won't be buying this set. If I did I'd consider it.

Just out of curiousity, Blu Ray players are $100 now. What's holding you back?

Eh...letting Greedo fire the first shot shows Han as even more of a bad-ass, because even if you get the first shot off, Han still lives and you still die ;)

Dammit! Don't give him ideas!
