Is Hurricane Irene Coming your Way?

Looks like the heart of it is going to move through west-central queens as it enters the NY area. I'm going to be on the outside edge of the main thrust, but still expect to see major wind gusts. Thankfully the worst of it won't start until mid day Sunday. I can't stand storms coming through in the middle of the night--very inconvenient.

Anyway, helped my neighbors put away lots of small things into garages. Hopefully minimal debris will be floating about. I'm just worried about my car, as I don't have a covered parking space. I was tempted to lash down a tarp over it, but I've been told the wind oscillation effect on it will ruin the paint. Got the grub clothes laid out for the soaking experience as the needs call for outside interventions. :)

I'm on Long Island too and the track of the storm as of right now is right through here.

I live on Long Island so this weekend should be fun. I live in the middle of it, though, so I won't see any flooding. I'll get some nasty winds, though, and it's possible some trees will come on down- hopefully not on my house.

I'm preparing for Irene the same way I've prepared for every other potential catastrophe in my life; i.e., pretending that nothing unusual is happening.
This strategy will either always serve you well, or it will kill you. I'm not sure which!

Here in Richmond, people are losing power by the tens of thousands. Somehow, we still have electricity, but with the winds howling like they are, I doubt this will last.

Chocolate supplies are holding out nicely.

My heart goes out to people who are fighting for their lives right now. I'm praying for the best.

Good luck to anyone in Irene's path. I've never experienced a hurricane, but have been through a few pretty wild tropical storms and they were more than enough.

All bars still open in Baltimore. Repeat: ALL BARS STILL OPEN IN BALTIMORE.

There was an ice storm in Indiana on January 4, 2005 (yes, I remember the date) and I was without power for 2 weeks, which was even more fun with a newborn baby to worry about.

After Hurricane Isabel in 2003, my dad (about 40 miles nw of Baltimore) lost power for about 3 weeks. My power, in actual Baltimore, never went out (shockingly enough, if you're familiar with Baltimore's haphazardly spaghetti monster powerlines). :cardie:

Eye going to pass 30 miles W of me tomorrow. We're gonna get fucked. 5-10" of rain predicted. 50-60 mph sustained winds with 80 mph gusts.

Be safe, all friends over the pond ~ Blood wine, a table to shelter under and don't forget the tin opener. Hoping it passes you all by, or at least no damage.
K'Eh.

Weather Channel streaker - mildly NSFW (you can see his ass and he turns around for a full-frontal shot, but it's grainy and far away).

I mostly just love how disgusted the field reporter is with everyone around him who isn't seeking shelter.

I'm filling up my bathtub now (for the off chance that I need extra water to flush the toilet during the next couple days). You never know if the water supply is going to need fixing after a big storm.

Having no experience with hurricanes, do they usually cause direct damage to plumbing and water supply like that?

It's much, much more likely that the water supply will just be contaminated (meaning there will still be non-potable water to flush the toilet) or that nothing will happen to the water supply at all. Though, they might have to turn off the water for a short period to fix any contamination issues (should they arise).

I'm just preparing for a worst-case scenario.
