Is Hurricane Irene Coming your Way?

I work weekends. Depending on when the storm finally rolls into the D.C. metro area, it could impact my drive home on Saturday or my drive into work on Sunday morning. My company has decided to pay for me to stay in at the nearby Marriott for the night. That way I have no excuse to call out from work. Meh.

Also, I was supposed to be hosting a birthday party for a friend on Saturday night. That's going to be difficult to do with the impending storm coming. Plus, apparently I won't even be at home on Saturday night to host it (unless we want to party in the hotel LOL).

Bring it, bitch! LET'S DO THIS.

Here in CT everyone is talking like the apocalypse is certain, which I find confusing since it's forecast to hit as a CAT 1 . I'm taking in all my outdoor furniture and putting everything in my basement as high as it can go. Does anybody else believe the media is over reacting?
:wtf: Let us know how you make out.

Unfortunately, our house is going to see some hurricane action. I have seen some severe weather in New England in the past, but was never in a hurricane.

What about you? My wife took a lot of pictures of our back yard that we just finished landscaping and told me to buy some buckets and batteries.

How do you guys prepare?
On the supposition that it isn't too late, you need to stock up on food (that doesn't need to be cooked), water (one gallon per person per day for at least seven days). If you have pets, you'll also need provisions for them. You should also have a well stocked first aid kit (you can't count on anyone being able to get to you if someone gets sick or hurt) and fill up your gas tank.

You can get more info at http://weather.com or http://www.ready.gov/

Please be safe and take needed precautions where you should.

Whatever hits, check in when you can.

Our thoughts and prayers and Zen hugs to all in Irene's way.

I bought a bunch of food and water (plus random extras such as wipes and hand sanitizer (in case there's no clean water)).

The hardware store was out of regular flashlights, but they had one freaking awesome led work-light left. It runs on six AA batteries, and it lights up a whole room! :techman:

Plus, I found some of my older smaller flashlights, and I'm powering up cellphones/kindle. I also got a battery-operated radio/weather-alert device, and I put all my important documents/some extra cash/etc. in a zip-lock bag. I also put some more wiper fluid in my car and filled up the gas tank.

Yup, I'm sheltering some family here from a county further south, but we're only a few blocks from the evacuation zone.

Its been downgraded somewhat, sustained winds in NJ prod in the 75-85 mph range, with gusts to 100.

RAMA

Fisticoy Weather Services is already on the move. Using the most advanced quack science money laundering can buy, we've designed a wind barrier to force the hurricane to move further away from the coast. We've placed three of these in key locations, running extension cords to a house located somewhere along Myrtle beach.

In appreciation, we have gladly charged every major east coast city approximately $1,000,000 to encourage further research, to which we will eventually consider thinking about while we're on sabbatical in the Virgin Islands.

You're welcome, east coast.

(seriously though, folks, stay safe!)

I'm preparing for Irene the same way I've prepared for every other potential catastrophe in my life; i.e., pretending that nothing unusual is happening.

Here's my luck so far:
1) Discovered that a tree owned by my next door neighbor has a 2 inch cut going around it. His reasoning? "It will stop the leaves from growing". I should point out he is over 90 years old.

2) In my rush to secure my outside furniture I forgot to secure my trees. Guess what I'm doing today?

3) Just found out National Flood Insurance does not cover basement flooding. I just paid $370 back in June strictly for my basement.

Weather Channel offered this tip: If you are going to be contacting people by cell, use texting ... it takes less battery power.

Im on the south side of Long Island so we're gonna get hit. Not really worried about damage or flooding (although both are a real possibility), my biggest fear is losing power. We lost power back in '85? when we were hit by Hurricane Gloria. Lost power for

EIGHT MOTHERFUCKING DAYS.

There is no way i want to do that again.

That happened here, too. I worked in West Bridgewater at the time and they lost power for about a week. Luckily, I was living in Weymouth so I had power at home.

There was an ice storm in Indiana on January 4, 2005 (yes, I remember the date) and I was without power for 2 weeks, which was even more fun with a newborn baby to worry about.

I just checked in with the family back home. So far so good, it's just a lot of rain they're getting. The Washington Post though did just post a news update (via email alert) that over 300,000 people in Southeastern Virginia are now without power. Yikes.

Hope everyone makes out ok back east. I can't imagine what you guys go through with each hurricane or storm but I just hope everyone is safe and this thing passes with minimal damage done.
