Total fail on the costume without the trunks. If they broke the blue down into parts I MIGHT be able to live with it. That along with the golden age or Earth 2 style emblem that I have never liked.
I just don't understand some peoples opinion that the "TRUNKS" are fucking underwear. his costume with it has lasted more 70 years for Christ's sake!
I don't know about anybody else but his costume is iconic as apple pie and the american flag. What is next? Changing the colors on the american flag because they are boring or just want to change them?

Well Batman has had trunks for most of HIS comic history, and yet I don't remember people throwing a fit over those being gone from the movies.

It definitely takes some adjusting to on Supes, but I've really grown to like the look myself. We probably shouldn't draw any firm conclusions based off these small, blurry shots though. There's lots of detail and texture we just aren't seeing here.

Exactly so. Although I knew a Hollywood agent - of all people! - who refused to see any of the Burton-era movies because the idea of Batman wearing armor offended him.

it looks pretty stupid just being an endless sea of blue. maybe he should considering wearing something a different color, to break up all that blue. I'm thinking maybe some trunks, or shorts or something.

Yeah I never completely understood the "wearing underwear on the outside" bit either. The costume was originally designed to emulate the type worn by professional wrestlers of the time.

With the crummy leaked photos out, I anticipate TPTB releasing a publicity new still by next week.

Trunks are essential, and, yes, they look silly, but it suits a man who is all-boy scout and stands up for all that is good. Chris Reeves wasn't shy at all despite the costume as he found a way to dismiss any cynicism (something no one is able to do today) and inhabit the character.

How in God's name does a man wearing trunks equal "all-out boy scout" and standing up for all that is good? Last I checked, wearing a pair of red briefs on top of blue jeans doesn't mean you're a paragon of society ... if it does, I've been doing things all wrong.

It's not a "good" thing but hardly a "bad" thing, either.

It's just that what Superman wears is not underwear. It's part of a unitard/costume that's common for people to wear in a few different -granted rare- situations.

I think the biggest problem I might see with this costume it has that heavy rubber look to it that super-hero costumes have had for the better part of the last 20 years or so. Would it be that bad if the costume was made out of some-sort-of cloth or fabric? I don't think the heaviness and shininess works well or looks good at all on film. And Superman, obviously, doesn't need the padding and protection from weapons.

The Spider-man costume from that series of movies probably did things the "best" in terms of costume design but I really don't think a simple spandex wrestler's/gymnast suit that's been well designed would look that bad.

As noted above, the suit Reeves wore in the '79 movie was probably the best. I think it still has some flaws, I'm not a fan of the shades of the colors uses or the size of the shield but overall I think it looks fine.

Also, I'd prefer no \S/ on the cape, personally. But I can go either way on that one.

The trunks are not essential, but the purpose they serve (breaking up the sea of blue) is fairly essential from a design perspective imo. The reason "trunk-less Superman" looks stupid is they didn't adjust the rest of Superman's suit design to compensate for the loss of color.

The only 'color' in Superman's suit is the big S, which is at the top of his suit. This is different than say Spider-Man, whose entire top half is taken up by the red spidery design, which makes the bottom of the costume free to be blue. No trunks needed. The change from red-to-blue switch at the waist accomplishes the same effect naturally.

(for my money Spider-Man's costume is by far the best designed superhero suit of all time, I could go on and on about it for paragraphs and paragraphs but I won't. It looks fantastic onscreen as well as in the Raimi movies)

Yeah, but it was also the 70s.

I certainly wouldn't have objected to seeing the trunks again, but I also think it's probably time to consider something a bit more modern for the character, and to move away from the circus strongman look of the 30s.

I mean, Wolverine often wore trunks in the comics as well, but can anyone seriously imagine Hugh Jackman running around with those in 2011, or in the kind of simple tights Reeve did? If he had to move forward with the times, maybe Superman should as well.

That's why I pointed out, earlier this morning, how a red or gold belt would have been a pretty smart move -- something to give a little contrast and a little break from the dark blue.

Yeah it DOES look kind of heavy for some reason. It almost reminds me of the overly-padded Flash suit from the 90s.
