The next villain?

Everything is better with Cardassians in it.

Seriously, if they were to make a special guest appearance, I'd be squeeing my way through life all through 2012.

Me too. I'm not sure that making the Cardassians the villains of any future films is the way to go mind you. Maybe a emerging interstellar power that has several...heated interactions with the rather different Federation of this universe.

Worthy foes anyone?

I'm one of the persons who'd rather the next film not have a clearly defined villain or enemy. But, if there were one, I'd like to see the Cardassians. They're capable of being both sophisticated, even personally charming, but ruthlessly evil at the same time. Even thought they aren't as familiar to non-fans as Klingons or Romulans or Borg, I think they'd have a lot of appeal.

I'd prefer to have some antagonistic "force" creating the conflict, but not out of some sense of malice or revenge. I've thought that the Tholians would be good in such a role. They haven't really been developed, but the episodes they've been in seem to hint that they're a major "behind the scenes" force. I doubt that they would be featured in a movie, though.

The Cardassians don't really work due to their history. In this century, they're not oppressive subjugators, so a character like Dukat could never really be unless they ignore that history.

And while everything points to Cardassians being present in this time frame and before, there was never any conflict with the Federation until after they occupied Bajor.

Besides, this is an original series remake. You're not likely to see Borg, Ferengi, Cardassians, Breen, Dominion, etc. Those need to stay where they belong, with the next gen series.

It doesn't seem like a big stretch to imagine that the destruction and chaos unleashed by Nero would've given the Cardassians an opening to become a major power earlier than they did in the "prime" universe. I really don't want to see a Klingon heavy movie and I don't think they'd use Romulans twice in a row, even with the caveat that Nero could've been from any race. In the "prime" universe, the Romulans weren't known to be offshoots of Vulcans until "Balance of Terror" so that's already one big change. Still, I agree that it's unlikely that Abrams, etc. would use a TNG-era race or villain in this TOS remake.

I dunno, I think having Tholians as an antagonist in conjunction with some natural disaster would be good for the next film. It would be a good change from the Trek films using villains to drive the story.

Also, you don't need the entire species to conform to a cliché. An individual can be a great antagonist....and maybe he/she just happens to be a Cardassian. The intriguing bit is the alieness of their mentality, that they're a complex people that produces complex individuals. There's some great storytelling potential, right there.

That may be kind of hard since the Borg time travelled in ST:FC, and drones were discovered, on Earth, in an episode of ST Enterprise. And the Narada was retrofitted by the Tal Shiar in the original universe, with Borg technology. The Klingon could have easily gotten hold of some of this technology.

That's not canon, however. The whole Borg technology on the Narada bit is from the comics, if I'm not mistaken.

There have been plenty of visual reboots in the past, yet still no deviation in the general history of things. Changing the look of things to be more modern does not necessarily mean that the bag is open to just do whatever. It's not a full on reboot.

If STTMP didn't already cement it for us...Green Lantern will demonstrate that conceptual bad guys aren't always easy to understand for audiences...in terms of broad appeal...quite frankly I would love to see Journey to Babel-esque plotlines, involving alien intrigue, the Tholians, Gorn , Andorians, (maybe even the Kzin) would not be unwelcome.

This is the only way I could see anything like the occasional desired Star Trek "west wing" even approching an interesting show.

Tough. I'd like to see the Klingons again. Or would this be for the first time?

I'd love to see Kirk go up against the Borg.

But probably someone new, a new race, a new foe, new antagonist would probably be best.

It could be the first time, a different kind of Klingon is seen though I guess.

For a Mirror-Universe Robau, I would embrace the Abomination and all its hideous brood.
I'd be afraid not to. The Tantalus Device was designed to simply mimic the effect of Mirror Robau's steely gaze! And I bet some of His operatives are...Vulcan!

I'd like to see Kirk match wits with the evil clown from Voyager's "the Thaw." Just come up with a contrivance to have him appear in the Alpha Quadrant one hundred years ealier.

I think the next villain should be a genetically engineered donkey who wears a sombrero and smokes cigars.

It'll add the comedy element that Abrams seems to be going for (and open the door for some awesome racially insensitive humor), be a "Kahn-like but not Kahn" character, and we'll finally get to see a star trek character use the bathroom (hopefully onscreen).
