In Paradise Lost, it appears Odo uses a Vulcan Neck pinch to knock out a female security guard. ( not TOTally sure if she was security or a nurse...) How does Odo know a Vulcan neck pinch and why did he use it on her?? He had just knocked out the two male guards with a punch and a throw...

Do we need to know "how" Odo knew the Vulcan pinch? He's a law enforcement officer, so probably knows all sorts of aggressive and defensive moves from various species. We don't need to know that he learnt it from some Vulcan guy a few years back, do we?

As for why use it on the female guard... I assume (hope!) chivalry is still alive in the 24th century and Odo didn't feel it really appropriate to punch a woman out. He's nice like that.

Well, my personal objections to the idea of chivalry aside, it's probably your real-world answer. Trek's odd like that - it insists that women be capable security guards, soldiers, etc, but then also has difficulty treating them like they are.

More on topic, do we even know if in-universe it's intended to be a Vulcan pinch? Surely other cultures have developed pressure-point attacks or the like that cause temporary unconsciousness?

Trek Survivor's right, though, in that we don't really need to know how and when he learnt it (whatever it was); it makes sense he would, so it's not really a "hold on a minute..." moment. :)

We how about this...? Was she a security guard? You are right about women on the Star Trek shows. While TOS had no female security guards, the others did. They did whatever the guys did but, you are right, they almost never go knocked out or hurt. I cannot recall them ever going toe to toe with a bad guy... And though they are supposed to have some kind of martial arts training or something, she did really poorly fighting Odo. A neck chop from him would have done the smae thing to her.

As indicated above, they try to keep violence against women to a minimum. Look at all the fights Kira's been in. She's able to whup most of the male opponents, but against another woman, she actually lost (Invasive Procedures). It was only when she gets outnumbered, that she gets KO'd from behind. Other than that, about the only 1-on-1 combat she was outmatched was against the Jem'Hadar in The Search, and even then he used his phaser instead of giving her a major pounding. That probably wouldn't have been approved by the advocate groups.

Odo is a woman herself, for all we know.

I think I heard that pinching nerve clusters where the neck meets the shoulder actually can briefly render a person unconscious. Vulcans just have the physical strength to administer it like it's nothing. Data used it on several occasions. And Picard used it once (on a character played by Tim Russ ironically), although with extra effort than most Vulcans.

And Seven of Nine used it on Tuvok.

I'm pretty sure female Starfleet security officers saw plenty of action.

Tasha, for one, got hurled across Stage 16 and killed.

Another woman was zapped with a phaser shot in TNG's Power Play.

Another fell through the floor and got stuck/killed in "In Theory" (I think it was that one)

Sito got killed off in "Lower Decks."
