ALPHA's a new series on sy fy: disscussion and comments *spoiler*

Any speculation as to what the siren chick's limitation is? She mentioned she had one, but I don't recall it ever actually coming into play. I imagine it's more than eye contact (especially since we saw her initiate it without eye contact on the Luke Cage wannabe).

she couldn't do it on that one hotel security guy

I thought they mentioned something that it doesn't work as good on "well-ordered" or "well-controlled" minds or something like that. Which would include a decent security guy ... who then gets ordered around by a less-well-controlled guy like the desk clerk.:lol:

This show wasn't even on my radar, but after finding out that David Strathairn is in it, I'm gonna check it out. Laura Mennell is in it too, so that's a plus.

I also got the impression that even though it's set in NYC, they filmed in LA or Vancouver
Based on what little I know, I'm guessing Vancouver.
The Audience would never buy NYC standing in for NYC, you kinda have to do it in Vancouver, because the audience knows Vancouver as NYC ;)

^ Looks like you're right. According to this, it was shot in Toronto.

Alphas is executive produced by Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun for BermanBraun Television and will be directed by Jack Bender (director and executive producer of Lost). Gene Stein is also executive producer. It is slated to commence production next month in Toronto.

OK forgive my ignorance, anyways, movie and TV audiences know the Canadian location that stands in for NYC better these days than they know the actual NYC.

Pretty decent start, so Strathairn, Wolfe, and Behr will keep me around for at least a few more episodes to see how things start to develop.

[...] (was this previously a Web Series?) [...]
I don't believe so, though I could be wrong. I do know it was previously at one of the broadcast networks, but that network passed on it.

The reason I suspected Web Series, is because IMDB shows the actors in only 4 episodes, suggesting 4 episodes were done first. Sanctuary's first Season looked similar, it showed them in fewer episodes than S1 was, because a few extra episodes were made for Syfy airing.

Ugh, that's it for me. The show was even worse than I expected. It was exactly the type of drab, boring, formulaic cop show with sci fi window dressing that I expected, but David Straitharn and Keith Callum Rennie didn't manage to salvage things as I'd hoped.

Straitharn's character was too much of a cliche (like all the other characters) - a kindly, doddering old professor type - I really was hoping for someone with a bit more of an edge. He's being completely wasted. I guess things must be tough for older actors when they have to slum like this just to make a paycheck. (Maybe he suggested something more sinister towards the end of the show - after 40 minutes, I was so bored I just gave up on it.)

Rennie was wildly miscast. The lines he was given suggested an actor with a knack for comedy, which Rennie clearly doesn't have. His delivery was painfully off. He's been great in everything I've seen him in, but come to think of it, I've never seen him try to play a character with a comic side, and he shouldn't ever try to do that again. It's out of his range.

The fact that the characters are boneheadly obvious cliches was a real problem. You have your angry black cop, your cute, nerdy girl, your sexy bad girl, your scrawny white nerd boy who acts practically autistic, and the tragic loner-hero type. Even good actors would struggle to make characters like that come alive, and this show isn't cast nearly that well.

Malik Yoba as the angry black cop does manage to break through and feel like a real person. The cute, nerdy girl might have potential. Sexy bad girl and nerd boy are gratingly obnoxious and kill every scene they're in. Tragic loner hero is just boring.

But I'd hate to see better actors in those roles because good actors deserve better than such uninspired writing. Compare these character types to Heroes, which at least put some effort into not doing the most obvious thing. The cop wasn't an angry, macho type with super strength powers. He was a schlub with a "girly" power - mind-reading. The super powered character was the sexy bad girl. The tiny little teenage cheerleader had Wolverine's power. See how that mixes things up from the expected? I appreciated that about the show. Alphas does exactly the kind of stupid thing than Heroes pointedly avoided.

SyFy continues to be a disaster. They should stop trying to do sci fi at all and just become The Wrestling Channel.

Plenty of shows are shot in NYC, but they have to have a decent budget that a SyFy show shouldn't afford. I've been to NYC once in my life but I can damn well tell when they're not shooting there, and it's another demerit against the show.

Having seen nothing, and with no intention to do so, it is worth pointing out that Behr and Wolfe didn't join this thing until the first regular episode, so it might improve next week.

Oh, and it's Callum Keith Rennie, not the other way around.

Too late, the pilot episode already has driven me away.

After 35 seasons of Law & Order the wrong NYPD uniforms said generic city to me until I saw a public park sign identify the place as New York.

Callum Keith Rennie played a comic-relief type character on Californication. I think it was the second season where he played an aging rock star who liked the cut of Hank Moody's jib. Checking out his IMDB now, ironically he did an episode of Mutant X too, haha.

As usual, you have nothing useful or intelligent to say. :rommie:
Oh, I'm sorry, let me bitch pointlessly about the absolute HORROR of a television series taking place in a city different than the one it was filmed in. Such AUDACITY! Clearly, it is a MAJOR reason for a show's failure.

I... I just can't BELIEVE they would do such a thing! OH MY FUCKING GOD! How... how... how DARE they! I... I think my blood vessels are near bursting just thinking about it! Why, God, why?! WHY WOULD THEY DO SUCH A THING! Clearly they simply weren't thinking!

Okay, I took a moment to calm down. Phew. Anyway, I'm glad this is the only show in the universe to do such a tragically horrifying thing. A show like, oh I don't know, Heroes would clearly never do it. And even if it did, my heavens, it's a good thing you didn't use that show as a comparison to your worthless bitching just a moment earlier. Because, golly, that would be pretty fucking hypocritical all around. And we simply couldn't have that. No sir.

Glad to see you spending so much time bitching about a show you're never going to see again, though.

See you in next week's thread.

Oh, and P.S.: Archetypical characters are fine. And the oh-so-awesome mixing-shit-up ones you listed from Heroes were amongst the most boring fucking characters to ever grace television.

TLDR:

A Speedo makes someone think of a kindly old doddering professor?

That must have been a hellish school to go to. My deepest condolences.

Wow, you're such a quitter. Plenty of shows improve over time. Hopefully the show has more staying power than you do. Syfy needs something decent to show.

RAMA

I think I'll be giving it a miss after that too. I'll maybe revisit it if I hear good things later on.
