Air/Space Pod Mark II WIP

Klaus

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Some may recall the original version of this one, seen here: link and link... this is a project to enlarge it and make it more "practical" than the first. This is a civilian craft for sightseeing and general touring.

Perfect to flit about your city ships as a launch. Great visibility. Airplane cockpit were even called greenhouses, before the glass was scaled back. A return to visibilitu is great.

On a side note, I have often wish that stealth could be defeated so we can go back to designing aircraft that don't have that sawtooth lok to them

I actually kinda like the faceted look to the current fighters. Sure the Nighthawk looked pretty unusual from the side view, but the F-22 and F-35 actually look pretty cool. And have you seen the competing design to the F-22? I think it was called the Black Widow. Anyways, it was this sleek fighter, which looked much like the F-22 Raptor, but with these futuristic-looking thrusters, and low tail fins. Those of you who have played Ace Combat 5 are probably familiar with this fighter concept.

The Black Widow is what they called the P-61 nightfighter from WW2. A very cool plane in and of itself. The competitor to the F-22 was the F-23. Not sure if it had a nick name.

The YF-22 was called "Lightning II" before it was selected. The service version was named Raptor is keeping with the trend of naming air superiority fighters after birds.

I can't see nothin'! And the link is forbidden at work... Porn I assume? ;)

Birds like the Tomcat, Hornet and Super Hornet? Yes, I know the Tomcat is out, and the hornet is on it's way out. I'm just busting your balls about the trend.

Note all of those were Navy birds :D

The bird of prey thing is an Air Force deal, and a recent one at that. I personally believe the Lightning II and Black Widow II names were advanced by the manufacturers A) to generate warm fuzzies in the Air Force brass by refering to their past greats and B) with an eye toward the fact that there aren't all that many instantly recognized bird of prey names and Eagle and Falcon were already taken. The F-35 was eventually named "Lightning II"

(The Army, on yet another hand, tends to name its birds primarily for Native American tribes, with the notable exceptions of the UH-60 series Black Hawks--which seem to be named for after two Native American Chiefs--and the AH-1 Cobra, which is named after its own prototype's nickname; Bell M-209 "HueyCobra.")

^So where does that leave the A-10 Warthog? Pretty sure it's neither a bird nor a native american tribe.

A-10 Thunderbolt II. Warthog is nick name because it is "ugly." (Like Huey is a nickname for the UH-1 because "Iroquois" is hard to say).

The A-10 predates the bird of prey thing. Also, and this I'm less sure of, but I think the Air Force wanted the Bird of Prey thing to apply to air superiority fighters. They have an institutional dislike (literally--and that's not literally in the miss-usage of the word meme.) of air to ground. One of the development mottoes on the F-22A project was "Not a Pound for Air to Ground."

(Despite their efforts--which they also applied to the F-15--the platform turns out to be a pretty good air to ground asset.)
