Smith resonates with me in a way that the other nuWho docs did not.

Re: Smith resonates with me in a way that the other nuWho docs did not

When people say so and so is "their" Doctor or so and so is my first Doctor, they're referring to either the first Doctor they started watching and or their favorite Doctor. It's something of a Doctor Who fandom tradition. If you expand your fandom you'll understand. :)

I believe that all the actors who have played our beloved Doctor have contributed to the greatness of the character. But I also have to say that Matt Smith has rapidly become my favorite doctor, replacing (rather reluctantly) Tom Baker as the one I identified with the most. And I have certainly enjoyed the tone of Matt Smith's episodes as well. The dynamics of the cast are awesome ... although sometimes I wish Rory had more sequences like he had in the "A Good Man Goes To War" episode. The Doctor, Amy, Rory and River seem to mesh like no other group of companions and Doctor combo before.

First Doctor and My Doctor can be one and the same but aren't always.

For example Davison is My Doctor but Tom was my first (technically Pertwee might count as my oldest Who memory is probably from Planet of the Spiders.)

^ Indeed. I should have implied that in my post. As mentioned earlier my favorite Doctor is David Tennant, but my first Doctor was Chris Eccelstone.

Started with Tom Baker on PBS back in the early 1980s. Favorite Doctor used to Davison (My Second Doctor), But as I watch more and more Doctor Who, I find I adore something about each of them, so, I can't really say I have a favorite anymore, but, on the other hand, I don't dislike any of them either, as some folks do. I'm currently collecting Pertwee Stories, so, once I have them all, I'll be watching them straight through, and he may become my favorite for awhile until I do a run on someone else :techman:

Pertwee was the Doctor when I started watching the show, and I prefer some to others, but I don't really have a "my" Doctor or consider any one of them definitive.

I guess Davison would be my Doctor but I like all the Doctors and really that character is always a constant through every story and it's the writing, production and the companion(s) that make or break a story for me.

So I'm not a huge fan of the 6th Doctor on TV but Colin in the audios with a more interesting companion than Peri like Evelyn or even just a better written Peri and in more compelling stories is a great doctor.

Or Pertwee, probably my least favourite doctor is so much better in the mostly harder edged season 7 with Liz Shaw keeping his ego in check than in the more cosy seasons 8-11 with UNIT reduced to a comedy troupe.

Tom Baker even when he gets silly at points is always great to watch but for me he's at his peak when paired with Leela in the more gothic stories.

That's why as much as I love how Smith is portraying the Doctor he doesn't have the same level of impact for me as Tennant as I have no interest in the recurring plotlines or the 'event' episodes and don't like Amy.

The Doctor will always, first and foremost, be Christopher Eccleston's haunted working-class revolutionary to me.

Oddly enough, the Doctor will never be that for me, and I loved Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor.

...I sure do miss that "I didn't go to Eton but I'm fifty times smarter than the lot of you, and you should be scared to death of me" feel that Eccleston brought.

I do, however, miss that vibe too.

Swings and rounabouts, I think Matt Smith is one of the worst Doctors ever. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt should Moffat and Gillan (can't act for shit) leave, who probably bring him down.

That's interesting because I think I miss the fallibility of Nine more than anything else. He acted in a perhaps more cowardly way than either Tennant or Smith at times (though cowardly is perhaps the wrong word.) For example he's clearly shitting himself when he realises Van Statten has a Dalek, but then when he realises it's impotent he becomes almost school bully like. Fear and vindictivness both seem more real as emotions to feel when dealing with the Daleks than the righteous anger both Ten and 11 have shown. An overlooked reason why the Daleks have never been scarier than in 'Dalek', because it seems the only episode where the Doctor himself was actually fearful of them.

Smith resonates with me in a way that the other Doctor Who docs did not. I'm pretty sure he has become by favorite actor in the role, beating Patrick Troughton.

I think it has a lot to do with Moffat being the showrunner now over Davies.

And I have the opposite reaction. I really like Matt Smith's portrayal despite Moffat being in charge. I have found that I really don't enjoy the writing half as much as I did with RTD; Season 5 I found to be especially boring.

I tend to agree. I like Smith's performances but the stories have not been of the same quality as in the past. I know Moffat can write some brilliant stories but his series direction seems to be lacking that spark.

My problem with Matt Smith, and it might not be entirely his fault, is that I don't feel any attachment to him. He seems Doctorish enough but he hasn't really given me enough to latch unto or really endear himself.

Agreed, and with that said, I prefer Smith over Tennant and Eccleston because Smith seems to be channeling a good chunk of Troughton and Pertwee (my first), along with Tennant.

Re: Smith resonates with me in a way that the other nuWho docs did not

Smith has taken a while to grow on me. I loved the danger projected by Nine, though Ten was (and still is, I guess) "my Doctor". I liked his obvious brilliance and his barely contained energy. The transition to Eleven was a struggle for me, as he seemed to be written/portrayed as a moron in many of his early episodes, as if all of his brain didn't make it through regeneration.

Baker was my first and only Doctor prior to Nine, so for much of my life, he was "the" Doctor. But it didn't take long for Nine to take his place, and probably a season and a half for Ten to take his place. Eleven hasn't changed anything. So far.

Honestly, River Song is the primary reason I watch now.

Your avatar makes me think you're all for Matt Smith, 100%.

Smith initially struck me as being Troughtonesque but that has slipped as he made the character his own.

I thought it was a funny clip. Perhaps I should clairfy "Matt Smith as the Doctor", I don't have a problem with Matt Smith himself, but I don't feel as connected to his Doctor as I did 9 and 10.

Re: Smith resonates with me in a way that the other nuWho docs did not

I've liked all the actors for different reasons. Matts Doctor hasn't totally clicked with me yet, but hes really quite close.

Part of the problem for me is that Amy and Rory have been overshadowing him quite a bit. I'd really like to see him do a solo story, or better still, with a less overwelming companion.
