The real problem is that the Doctor has become a supporting character on his own show, and the least interesting.

I'm much more invested in River, Amy and Rory than I am in the dude in the bow tie they hang around with.

That said, I do like Smith more now than I did in the beginning.

I would actually be fine if in the premiere episode for the fall if we don't see Amy or Rory at all. Maybe that's part of the whole set up and why the Doctor left them. Looking forward to it, no matter what happens.

I've liked all the actors for different reasons. Matts Doctor hasn't totally clicked with me yet, but hes really quite close.

Part of the problem for me is that Amy and Rory have been overshadowing him quite a bit. I'd really like to see him do a solo story, or better still, with a less overwelming companion.

I like Smith alot. He's my current favorite. I like the sense of wonder he brings to the role. His reactions really sell it. I think T. Baker was my first Doctor, but I really like Davison, Troughton and Pertwee more.

Well this has been a problem since day 1. That's why the Doctor works as a character, you can't relate to him. How can you, he's a 900+ year old alien that travels through time and space with the Encyclopedia Universal in his head. He always seems to one or two steps ahead of everybody.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think EVERY Doctor has mentioned it and a few have complained about it (Tom Baker was the loudest).

Sadly true ^

I can see what people mean about the Doctor becoming almost a supporting character, but it isn't like this is wholly new for the show is it? Hartnell wasn't really the focus of the show, and both Troughton and Davison had to contend with a slightly larger Tardis crew. I guess Pertwee was the first Doctor to be the "star" of ths show, and even Tom could at times be sidelined, especially when Sarah, Harry, the Brig and UNIT were running around in the early days.

If/when Rory and Amy leave, and depending how the River story is handled, it might be that next year we see the Doctor travelling with a single companion again, or it maybe that he has multiple companions again, but I don't think either could be construed as neccesarily wrong or out of sync with the way the show has been in the past.

I hate Fear Her, but I quite liked the Lodger, and I hadn't expected to as I find whatsisname annoying in real life, he was quite likable in the show though.

It wasn't a huge waste of time because it featured the first appearance of the Proto-TARDIS. Also, it was great to see The Doctor try and act like a normal person without the use of the chameleon arch. Oh and I loved the soccer stuff since that is a huge passion of Matt Smith's.

Well, I was generally disappointed with the entire season (actually, I disliked almost every single episode), and The Lodger didn't help.

Really there is no debate between the two. The Lodger was light and some what fun. Fear Her was just plain bad.

It was light, for sure, but I didn't find it fun at all. I kept waiting for it to make a point.

I think it has a lot to do with Moffat being the showrunner now over Davies. With RTD it felt like a show that was going out of it's way to say "Hey look at me, this is the same Doctor Who you remember!" With Moffat at the helms I no longer feel the show is going out of it's way to say it's Doctor Who, it just is.

Having only read the first page of the thread I've no clue if anyone else has pointed this out but... Moffat's Who does indeed go out of it's way to remind us that it's Doctor Who starting with very first episode when he's telling the Atraxi who he is and we see all the past Doctor's faces. Then there's the First Doctor on the library card and The Fourth Doctor's voice clip offering a jelly baby. Just saying.

I can't recall off hand but were there visual references to the past Doctors prior to the sketches in the Journal of Impossible Things in S3's "Human Nature/The Family of Blood"

When I started watching back in 2005 it seemed like a continuation of the old series. I never question it but I am curious why others felt it might not have been a continuation.
