TNG animated?

indolover

Fleet Captain
would a tng animated series work? most of the actors are approaching 60 now, but voice acting is not really dependent omeara age, is it?

I can see a huge opening to make strange aliens that don't fit the human parameters and other effects. Yeah, they could reassume their voice rolls. I'm just wondering how the storyline would work out. I would definantly watch the first episode.

I think that boat has set sail. The general public probably still have a bitter taste in their mouths after Insurrection and Nemesis, the best time to strike with an animated TNG would've been after First Contact.

I think that's totally unfair.

...The general public never even bothered to go see Nemesis. ;)

I can't imagine that anyone really wants to go back to TNG at this point in any case. Trek '09 was the most popular Trek product in ages, and that's likely in many respects because it explored (sort of) new territory...doing an animated TNG would be a huge step backwards.

I don't think it would necessarily be a step backwards, if you got a new set of writers/producers. I think people would be willing to watch it, as TNG is still popular enough.

But I don't see it happening. It has been too long since TNG ended, and they'll want to follow in the footsteps of Trek 11. I'd expect a TNG reboot would be more likely.

I certainly wouldn't be opposed to an animated series providing that the quality was up to par with the live action series. Unlike TOS all the stars are still with us and the age of the actors shouldn't be much of an issue (especially important for Data).

Unfortunately it's probably highly unlikely at this point due to the age of the series. Paramount/CBS no doubt is more interested in promoting the Abramsverse.

On the other hand, animated tie-ins to comic-book-based movies are generally not in the same continuity as the movies, although they might draw some elements from them. As long as it's about the same characters and premise, the details of continuity are only going to matter to the dedicated fans; the more general viewership won't care much.

I think CBS and Paramount want to promote Star Trek, period. The promotional push that accompanied the 2009 movie included materials tying into both the Abramsverse and the classic Trek continuity, and there's no reason not to expect the same in the future. Although, granted, that might mean that the emphasis would be on promoting the adventures of Kirk's crew in whatever continuity over those of Picard's crew.

 The general public wouldn't remember either movies.

I quite like to see an animated Star Trek series.

I don't think it needs to be TNG, but I wouldn't complain if that were the case. But an animated show more generally? Yes, why not? Would presumably be a cheaper way to test the TV waters with Trek again, anyway.

Well yeah, there is the Abramsverse, but I don't see how this does or should stop a TNG-based animated series. Trek is obviously not oblivious to running multiple projects at once, and frankly which organisation doesn't have a large portfolio of products at once?

The demand is still there. Syfy channel wouldn't show it almost daily, despite it being off the air nearly twenty years ago. TNG, of all modern Treks, still remains as the show most ingrained into pop culture, and because of this Sir Patrick Stewart is one of the world's most famous actors. Sir Patrick would not have to worry about being too old to do a Starship Mine-esque action Picard, as it's just his voice and not physically acting. :p

I guess it's just nostalgia in me talking, but I think it could be
viable nonetheless. And not just for TNG, but DS9, even Voyager.

I still like the idea. And it would be an endrun around the aging actors while still giving the fans what they want. I always said when I heard Spiner say he's getting too old to play Data to CGI the character while he still played the voice. This is even easier and cheaper. Why not?

I would like to see something like this! There are plenty of people out there who despise the direction that the new movie is bringing Star Trek toward. I long for the heyday of TNG and DS9. The problem would be getting people to watch it when there are other unrelated Star Trek projects out there at the same time.

I long for a return to the TOS of the sixties... but it ain't gonna happen.

No kidding.

An animated series will likely be ST09 oriented, but I could see a very tiny possibility that it would be another current ST property, like Titan, or Prometheus.
