TrekBBS vs. the Music

Are you listening on a good system?

Mind you, I haven't listened to the exact clip Alidar posted as I am at work, but it's worth bearing in mind that Youtube videos are significantly worse sound quality than a CD, and O'Brien's work is extremely delicate.

And how's that downloading going? :p

1. Yeah, it might well be YouTube. Because as I stated, I don't recall that song having problems when I listened to it in the past. I have that Thank You album...and although I haven't listened to it in a while, I don't recall thinking there were any sound issues. I usually listen to Thank You on my iPod, whereas I was listening to the YouTube video on my laptop speakers. So that might well be a factor also.

As I said, love the song. But it sounded unbalanced when I was listening to the YouTube video.

2. Not very well on the downloading. ;) I will try again tonight. I think I have to actually be around to tend to my machine if I download it like this, and I recon it will take a while.

3. Finally joined 10c. So bring on a concert schedule announcement (or at least something for PJ20)! :techman:

Pingfah, I think my CD version was a bit better. I'm blaming youtube, since I really can't find a better clip.

Yep. That might well have been it. Or who knows? I might have accidentally fucked up something on my laptop. It has this touchbar above the keyboard that you use to regulate that stuff, and sometimes I hit it by accident.

1. Michael Jackson's "Beat It"

This was done by a group of musicians. I was actually looking forward to hearing his version. I wasn't feeling this...kinda strange...some might find it charming...not me. D-Bad. Bad? :p

2. Harry Chapin "W.O.L.D." original with sad ending.

Never heard before. I don't know about this...it was very 70's and I really don't like alot of music from the 60's or 70's. It was too bad. C-Average/Ok.

3. Thou Shalt Always Kill (Original Video) Higher Quality - dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip

I have no idea what the hell to call this but it wasn't for me. He is like talking to really quirky electronic music...has a strange accent...whatever the message was it is lost on me. Not feeling this. F-Horrible.

^ The "Beat It" cover was actually done by a duo called Pomplamoose. I know it's not terribly clear in the video.

^ It seemed like there were more people in the video...I was mostly listening and not really watching. :alienblush:

^ It's two people, but they edit their vocals and instrumentals together to sound like a large group.

Well, of course he lost ME when he tried to make the utterly ridiculous assertion that Nirvana was 'just a band'.

Yeah, the thing before that was about not putting bands on ridiculous pedestals. All those bands were larger than life, but were just bands.

Anyway, I liked the line "thou shalt not read NME."

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - "Wild World"

This is one of those bands that gives me flashbacks to when I was just starting high school, as I had a friend who was really into punk at the time. I remember liking this band for their rather unique takes on classic songs, and a punk cover of a Cat Stevens song definitely qualifies. It's something I definitely appreciate a lot more now than I think I did at the time, as it's a lot of fun, so 9/10.

I think one of my favorites is probably "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

Van Morrison - "Brown-Eyed Girl"

Hm. This song sounds vaguely familiar. Was it used in a movie or something?

Seriously, it's a classic, and it's still a great song, but I think I'm a little over it by now. It's one of those songs that has the bad luck of being suitable for classic rock, oldies, and easy listening radio stations, so it can be hard to avoid at times. So marks off for having heard it too much. 7/10

Yeah, I suppose I was reaching a bit, but I do so love Brown Eyed Girl.

Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name
I'm no expert on RAtM, but I've always liked this song. It's hard enough to have some good driving energy, a good beat, but is still melodic enough to be enjoyable to somebody like me. The music is nothing complex, but it's well-executed, and the singer does a good job with both the ocassional singing and more often switching to a more "talkie" way of deliver the lyrics. On the one hand, the song's kinda repetitive, but that's of course nothing new in popular music, and this a good enough song that I'm not actually bothered by it. Good energy, a nice "fuck you" attitude, good instruments. 8/10

Madonna - I'll Remember
Madonna's one of those artists that I'm very familiar with on a "general cultural knowledge" level, but I know almost none of her work, so I'm glad to actually take the time to listen to one of her songs. This is... more peaceful than I expected. Nice low-key electronic instruments in the background, and Madonna's got a very pleasant voice. This is a very upbeat "goodbye" song; things are changing, nothing will be the same anymore - but this isn't so much a mournful lament song as a "thanks for the memories" type of song. The tempo
and tone pretty much stays the same throughout, maintaining a nice pleasant soft-rock/pop sound that would make great background music or something to listen to for just chilling out I liked it, and I really should listen to more Madonna. 8/10

Better Than Ezra - In the Blood
Have I heard of this band before? I feel like I have. I like it right from the outset, good guitar work, good singer. It's hard for me to pinpoint what specifically it is, but this song (this band?) is really working for me. They remind me a lot of LIVE actually, if a bit faster paced and less esoteric (at least in this song). I like the offbeat-sounding guitar work around the 2:45 mark. Is it possible to be nostalgic for something you've never really heard before? I'm going to make a point to check out more of this band, thanks for pointing them out. 10/10 seems a bit high maybe, but what the hey.

Erm...you guys DO realize that I indeed 'got it' and was just making a joke, right? :p

^ Yes. The winking smiling was supposed to be me going "I get it! I get it!" but the Internet doesn't always work well for that.

I'll take Kestrel's.

Old Crow Medicine Show - I Hear them All

I'm not sure if this song is supposed to be depressing or happy. The lyrics are simple, about a man observing tragedy in the world. It's nice enough, and it's rare enough for me to find country that I like. It sounds pretty good for a live show, pretty much exactly the quality you'd find if you listened to a studio recording. I probably couldn't stand listening to it more than once or twice a day because of the repetitive lyrics, but it's enjoyable. I give it a 7/10.

DJ Earworm - United State of Pop

It could have been good, if it wasn't so damn chaotic. It's impossible to tell what they're saying, because they switch singers almost between every other word. There's no organization or unifying theme, which at least keeps it interesting. 3/10.

Voltaire - Death Death Death Evil Evil Evil song

Hooray! Another Voltaire fan! :D I love the happy beat and plain, no-nonsense lyrics. You've got to love the message; the world sucks, you've got to find your way through it. Voltaire at his best. I've never heard this song before, so I'm glad you posted it as one of yours. 8/10

And now time for my three. I found all of these songs just today, and I'm glad I've found them because they're all among the best of their genres IMHO:

I think both; if you notice, the lyrics switch partway through to being about what could be instead of what is, but it remains melancholy.

Yeah, I can see how it would be chaotic. It's an end-of-year mashup of many of Billboard's Top 100 pop songs from 2009; since I listen to pop music, it's a lot easier for me. I figured this one would be pretty rough for people, but I love it.

Voltaire - Death Death Death Evil Evil Evil song

Hooray! Another Voltaire fan! :D

You can thank the Nostalgia Critic for that one - he included Death Death Devil Devil in a Top 10 video. :techman:

"I Saw My Lady Weep", John Dowland. This seems like medieval folk music, which is not a genre I've seen a lot in this thread. The subtle instrumentation make the human vocals most important, and I'd say the singer here succeeds brilliantly. She pours herself into the song, and her body language while singing adds as much to the performance as the background lute. 10/10

"Blind Guardian", A Voice in the Dark. And now for something completely different... The theatrics in the video amused me. The music is very energetic, but the vocals are not nearly as harsh or discordant as I expect from genre. I can actually make out the lyrics, which makes this power metal song completly different from any other I've ever heard. 7/10

"If I Ever Leave This World Alive", Flogging Molly. Beautiful instrumentation from the start, and it continues to ramp up throughout, gaining energy. I think I've heard this band before, though I can't remember which song. I'll be listening to more of them, though. 9/10

The magic of subgenres, my friend. This band actually wrote a song for two acoustic guitars and one vocalist, it's very nice and a lot of BG fans consider it to be the most "metal" thing out there.

My favorite thing about the video was Hansi's giant gold lollipop.

And John Dowland was the composer of the song (I Saw My Lady Weep), not the other way around. Johnnie-boy hasn't been performing music for rather a long time

"End of the Movie" - Cake

Man, I love Cake. :D And this comes off my favourite album, Comfort Eagle, so... yeah. This one is short and sweet (well, musically, at least, the lyrics are admittedly depressing ) and it's pretty hard not to enjoy. I've always loved the banjo line that goes through the song. 9/10

Fire in the Sky - Jordan Kare

Interesting song... it's kind of like Celtic folk meets space flight. It's got a nice slow build to it, and I really like the leader singer as well. The overall arrangement seems right up my alley, too. 9/10

"Breathe" - Télépopmusik

A shift to some low-key electronic music here. This is nice stuff, though it's not a genre I listen to a lot. This is spacey, but it's got a great beat and drive, so it's pretty listenable on a number of levels. Good stuff. 8/10

Luke Doucer & Melissa McClelland - Un Canadien Errant
I started thinking it was a Shins-like song. Lyrics seem very patriotic and, uh, Canadian (as well as French, obviously). Has a bit of folk song charm to it. I like it, although I can't say I love it. 3/5

Pirates of the Saskatchewan
I get it, you're Canadian :p
OK, it's amusing. Well, at first, I thought it was just stupid, but it grows on you. Musically, it's nothing special, except Pirate-y. But it does have evoke an interesting image. 3/5

Metric - Stadium Love
I've only heard one Metric song before. Good mix of dissonance and melody. The guitar tone is quite cool. The last song had a bit of an edge to it, but this song is even less polished. It contrasts well with the vocals. I might have to legitimately check them out. 5/5
