TrekBBS vs. the Music

^ I will do yours too. Hold on. ;)

1. Eisley "Better Love"

Haven't heard before. Nice vocals...song is ok. I have a hard time to label certain things but female vocals and lighter alt rock music. B-Good.

2. Cake "Mahna Mahna"

Haven't heard before...but have heard the band before. Not a fan. This wasn't too bad...some strange sounds going on here. C-Average/Ok.

3. Josh Ritter "To the Dogs or Whoever"

Haven't heard before. I dunno what to call this but I didn't like it...don't really like music like it. D-Bad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M61euZg5aSg (Christian influences in this Single - got to 4 in the UK last year. I am a Christian, but I just wanted to post this for the music itself-- it doesn't sound too obvious that it is anyway.)

1. Shell "Where is my happy ending"

Never heard before. This was good rockin' jam with female vocals...nice mix of pop/rock. B-Good.

Not a very well known artist - Shell Perris. Very good music though. Sorry, it was the wrong title- I was trying to find "Where is my happy ending" But I ended up finding "Shout It Out" with the wrong title. I couldn't find the real "Where is my happy ending" on youtube.

I am now.

The Misfits - Dig Up Her Bones
Like it. Definately my type, even though the words may be a little.. Unorthadox. Talking of that... 8/10

Heaven - DJ Sammy & Yanou ft. Do & Alia
I know this! I'm sure I do, from somewhere- was this a big hit? Well, I love it. Songs like this really make the music industry. 9/10

Birdy - Skinny Love
Oh yes. I know this. In fact I've listened to it obsessively sometimes. Her voice is just so beautiful, especially for her age! I know this song so well and I'm really happy it's been posted :). 10/10.

As a side note, I'm sorry my 'reviews' are so short, I just run out of things to say :alienblush:.

Rheostatics - Claire

Another mellow rock song and coming off the last one I think it suffers a bit just because it's similar tempo and style. However, it's not a bad song, sounds like something out of the 70's to me. Also, I appreciate you bringing more awareness to Canadian music to this thread, no matter the style. So many unappreciated bands that should be shared with the world. 6/10

Heh, yeah, most of the bands that I'm a really big fan of happen to be Canadian, just 'cause I'm exposed to them a lot. I keep trying to post bands from other countries, and then post two songs by Canadian artists anyway.

Also, it was really tough trying to choose a good Rheos song to post. They were a fantastic band, but not always the most accessible. That song was their lone Top 40 hit, so I decided to go with it.

The Misfits songs are like musical equivalent of old B scifi/horror movies. So yeah you are gonna get questionable and darker lyrics.

DJ Sammy song was played alot many years back and if it wasn't that version it most likely was this one; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxINZK_MXE4&feature=related which is the young lady singing in the other version.

I only heard the Birdy song recently and have been obsessed with it. :D

Cake is more famous for songs like Short Skirt Long Jacket and The Distance. Although the Sesame Street Cover is not all that surprising given their style.

Wretch 32 ft. Example - Unorthodox
Quick comments before the song:
Wow, that's one hell of a name, there. I had to check to make sure it wasn't "Wretch 32" or even "Wretch 32 ft." BTW, radio edit?
Now to the song:
The beat is quite catchy. Almost a reggae style to the chorus. The lyrics are quite cool too (although I think there is nothing trendier these days than not claiming to not follow a trend). But the whole thing is just fun. I might check them out for some music. Definitely good fun music for a party type atmosphere. 5/5

30 Seconds to Mars - The Kill (Bury Me)
I could probably review this song without having to listen to it since I've heard it so many times. It's a solid song, but not great. I have to be in the mood for it. I love the passion in the chorus. The verses do the soft-loud thing fairly well. You just have to enjoy the high pitch whiny vocals, which I do if I'm in the mood. Since I do feel like listening to songs like this right now, I'll go with 4/5
Strange music video, btw.

The Killers - Spaceman
Yeah, this is pretty typical Killers. I posted a Killers song earlier, so I can't criticize too much. But, at the same time, their music always seems too "safe." It's catchy, but it seems focusing on the pretty pop song without taking any risks. Then again, I can't complain either. 3/5

1. The Arcade Fire - Wake Up
Well, Arcade Fire is all the rage right now, so I guess I'm supposed to give this 10/10. But while it's not a bad song or anything, I'm just not seeing how this band is 'all that'. It's a decent song and I like it okay. But I'm still waiting for this band to hit me with a song that makes me want to rush out and buy their records. So far, that hasn't happened. 7/10

2. James - Laid
Never heard of these guys. But I like this song better than Arcade Fire. It's fun and interesting and slightly quirky...and I like quirky. Quirky works for me. I definitely plan to follow up on these guys. 8.5/10

3. Stone Temple Pilots - Trippin' On a Hole in a Paper Heart
Now, no doubt you expect me to go all crazy over a grunge band. But in this case, not so much. Because while I like this song very much, and I like the band (or, at least I like the band beginning around the time their singer stopped trying to be Layne Staley and/or Eddie Vedder half the time - a very annoying tendency he had at first. One of my friends in Seattle refers to STP as "The Alice Pearl Pirates" as a matter of course in normal conversation. Apparently they are not that popular in Seattle  ), the mix on this song is just TERRIBLE. The music is too loud for the singing and overpowers it in a very odd way that makes me wonder what they were smokin' when this track was mixed. This song itself is great - love the song. But the mix is terrible - I even tried another version, just to make sure it wasn't just that copy.

Pingfah loves this band - maybe he can tell us if this song has perhaps been remixed. I'd love to hear a remixed version. 8/10...but that is because the song is a 10...and the mix, in my view, is about a 5.

Here's three from me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUIBnmdJJ50&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnM9L4vQShI (yeah, I know it's pimpin' my favorite band, but I don't care. :p 1st single from the new album)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phDVZaPi4Zg (I am hopelessly addicted to this band - I'm still trying to find something they don't do well.)

I'm pretty sure all versions of Trippin on a Hole sound the same. I joke that it's my favorite song where I don't understand a single word to it. Arcade Fire isn't my favorite band, but they're alright. I think I'm running out of bands that haven't been done yet, so I figured I'd stick them in. As for the middle song, it's been stuck in my head all day, so I looked up who they were and put it on my list.

Well, I liked that middle one a lot - that was a great pick, and the only song I'd not heard before. Of course I'd heard the STP song...but for some reason I remember it being 'cleaner' sounding - more balanced. I really like the song. It's only the mixing that bothers me. How do you feel about the balance of the mix?

I actually own that Thank You album - I am gonna go listen to that next to check it, but I can't believe I'd never noticed that before....

It was "Intervention" that did it for me. I actually heard it it in a music store one day and decided that was it, I was buying the album. And Neon Bible remains my favourite album of theirs.

"The District Sleeps Tonight" - The Postal Service

I've always enjoyed the Postal Service, though they do have a tendency to sound a little same-y to me. Most songs of theirs I've heard seem to follow the same electronic instrumentals with ethereal vocals formula, which works well, but I just feel like I'm never surprised by them. I don't want to sound too critical, though, as I do like both them and this song. 7/10

Second one was blocked in Canada. If you have another link, I'll review it.

"Sidewinder" - Avenged Sevenfold

The intro made me a little worried that this would be a screamo song, but thankfully the lead singer seems to actually be able to, y'know, sing. Anyway, this song is a little further towards the "heavy" end of the rock spectrum than I normally like (my line is somewhere around Black Sabbath, I think), but it's still pretty good. All the instrumental work is very well done, and as I said off the top, the vocals are actually pretty solid. And the little genre-shift into a rather Latin feel at the end is kind fun, as well. 8/10

Yeah...I was kind of hoping that someone who wasn't really into metal would review this. The thing that amazes me about this band is that although they are hard rock/metal...they can do all kinds of things well. Everything from something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAyz-u5ma0o
(metal)

to something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzX0rhF8buo
(almost country)

to the song I posted (rock moving to Latin at the end).

There is one song on City of Evil (same album as Beast & Harlot and Sidewinder) that requires a full choir and orchestra.

And they still have some screamo stuff on the menu also.

Mind boggling - it really is.

I am a big fan of any band that displays massive talent in their ranks. And these guys absolutely have it. They have some incredible writing ability and ability to perform cross-genre...and Synyster Gates is a breathtaking guitarist. City of Evil (which illustrates all of these points) might just be the best record I've encountered in MANY years.

Record companies are weird. I once queued up a Barenaked Ladies video on YouTube, and got the message that it was blocked in Canada.

Anyway, the song is "Longing to Belong" by Eddie Vedder, and it's pretty enjoyable. I have to confess I don't know his solo stuff very well, and this song is a very pleasant surprise. It's a well-written acoustic ballad, which almost reminds me of Automatic for the People-era R.E.M. That's always good, in my books. ;) 9/10

^ What's kind of too bad is that the video that is blocked for you is a REAL music video - the sort of thing that Pearl Jam just doesn't do. In fact, that video is probably the only music video they have outside of Jeremy (done in, like, 1992) that is not based on a live performance. Even the video they did for The Fixer (on Backspacer) was based on a live performance. But this video has lots of thematic imagery...something that Pearl Jam has adamantly refused to do since the earliest days.

Maybe Ed's getting soft in his old age - picking his 'hills to stand on' more carefully.

1. Mike Doughty "Looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well"

Never heard before. This was alright...not too bad. Kinda quirky pop/rock sound. B-Good.

2. BRMC "Berlin"

Never heard before. Very rock and roll. Not too bad...but really didn't grab me either. C-Average/Ok.

3. Sloan "The Other Man Video"

Never heard before. Light alt rock/pop sound. Wasn't feeling the song. C-Average/Ok.

Yeah, that song is great. I think I wanted to do something off of Funeral (don't know why, Neon Bible is my favorite album of there's as well).

I have never had any problem with the mix on Trippin'. In fact, the whole album, produced by the peerless Brendan O'Brien, I have always considered one of the best produced albums of all time. It is also my favourite album of all time, that isn't made by Queen of course.

Are you listening on a good system?

Mind you, I haven't listened to the exact clip Alidar posted as I am at work, but it's worth bearing in mind that Youtube videos are significantly worse sound quality than a CD, and O'Brien's work is extremely delicate.

And how's that downloading going? :p

Pingfah, I think my CD version was a bit better. I'm blaming youtube, since I really can't find a better clip.

"Third Eye", Kellee Maize. Unless you count Natalie Portman, I've never heard a woman rapping before. I enjoy the instrumentation -- it's varied, and I liked the flute-like beginning, and I can follow the lyrics, unlike a lot of rap songs. "And yes I do know that I don't sound Caucasian" amused me. I liked the bridge most. 6.5/10

"Armatage Shanks", Green Day. Ah, here's a band I have some familarity with. The music's fine for driving, but the lyrics are on the...angsty side? I think I would have liked this more back in 2005 and 2006, but these days I'm fairly content with what life is sending my way, and happy with myself as a person. 5/10

Belinda Carlisle, "I Get Weak". This has been an interesting trio of songs -- I appreciate the variety. I've heard a bit of Carlisle -- I'm a sucker for eighties pop. If I heard this on the radio, even without hearing Carlisle's voice, I'd recognize the general era. I'm not sure how: maybe the synthesizers they used back then have a distinct texture as compared to their successors in the 90s and 2000s. Nice little love song. I remember the feeling of helplessness all too well. 8/10

"She's Some Kind of Wonderful" - Grand Funk Railroad

This one's a classic, for sure. Suffers from a bit of overplaying on classic rock radio, but there's no denying that it's a great song. I've always loved the groove in this one, and the bridge is fantastic. 9/10

"Patches" - Jerry Reed

Never heard the song or the artist. Kind of hard to classify this one, it's kind of like soul with country elements. It's interesting, but I'm finding it a bit hard to get into. It sounds a bit disjointed to me, I guess, which is why it doesn't work as well as it could. 6/10

"The Poetry of Reality" - Symphony of Science

Nice. :D These autotuned scientist songs are a lot of fun, though my favourite is still the original ("A More Glorious Dawn") but this one is great too. What I've always liked about them is how well they actually work as songs, as well as tributes to great scientists. 9/10
