TrekBBS vs. the Music

I don't like Candlebox very much. I think the singer's new band is considerably better, and for some reason his voice sounds a lot more powerful now.

The voice he is using in that song there sounds like an affectation, and quite an annoying one at that.

Time to give this thread a boost again.

1. Ill Nino - Unreal

I definitely see what you mean about the dreads. Lots of them flying around, slow-mo, being all dread-like.

As for the music, it's something I would've listened to several years ago, not so much now. I don't mean that as a slight, there was just a point where this style all started blending together for me. It's good for what it is, though. 5/10

2. AFI - Medicate

Awesome riff and beat. I really liked how this song kicked off. I remember I had a friend try to get me into these guys years ago, but I just couldn't get into them. This song might've worked better. My only criticism is that it goes on too long and doesn't sustain the intense and catchy vibe it starts with. 7/10

3. Disturbed - Decadence

Yeah, too screamo for me too. It pairs well with the visuals from The Matrix, though. Just the sort of music for crazy action scenes like that, not so much for listening on my own time. 4/10

"War of the Worlds" - Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.

First of all, points off for the annoying band name punctuation. :p Seriously, it's not a bad little song. The guitar is quite nice, but the vocal performance feels a bit off, at first. It works quite well at the end of the song, the singer sounds like he's trying way too hard for the first minute and a half. 6/10

"Chicago" - Sufjan Stevens

I've got to admit that I don't really know Stevens' stuff very well, despite the fact that I tend to like folky, singer-songwriter types. This is a very nice song, too, and I love the choruses, though I want to sing the lyrics from Arcade Fire's "No Cars Go." 9/10

"World Spins Madly On" - The Weepies

This is a quality acoustic ballad. First I've heard of this band, and probably not the best song to be introduced with, but I like it all the same. Weird ending, though... it just sort of stops, instead of having any sort of proper outro. 8/10

1. Chilliwack "My Girl"

Never heard before. I usually don't mind 80's music but this was awful. F-Horrible.

2. The Good Lovelies "Lie Down"

Never heard before. Liked the guitars and their voices aren't bad. Seemed like 3 regular gals just have fun. :) C-Average/Ok.

3. Joe Bataan "Subway Joe"

Never heard before. It says latin soul on YT...but not feeling it. Seems like soul though. C-Average/Ok.

"Say Anything" - One Star Story - Very good. It was a bit repeatative when it got towards the end, but it reminded me a bit of 'Fall Out Boys' with a female vocalist. 8/10

Betty Curse - "Do You Mind (If I Cry) - A nice voice, but not much was done with it. I kept hearing the same notes. 6/10

The Fire Restart - "A Secret Worth Keeping" - I only have a few songs with this kind of "Singing" in it, and that doesn't take up the entire song, it's not as bad- and I don't really like much of those to be honest. The blonde sings really well (Brilliantly in fact), and if it wasn't for the other guy, I'd rate this much higher. 5/10

2. Evanescence - My Immortal
I can't recall ever listening to Evanescence, so this will be interesting. Wow, this is beautiful. Really beautiful. I need to listen to that more. 10/10

While I do encourage listening to more Evanescence, most of their stuff doesn't sound like that. My Immortal showcases Amy Lee's amazing voice, but their work tends to be a lot heavier (though still with her great voice). The more commonly heard version of this song (I had to dig for the original album version) actually adds in the band near the end, giving it a boost in terms of power but IMO losing some of the ethereal quality.

The Wombats: Anti-D
You know, for a song about being an anti-depressant it starts off pretty... depressing. I kid, of course, I get the point of what he's going for here. I like the background music and the singer does a good job though he seems kinda similar to the singer of Third Eye Blind (honestly, this kinda reminded me of a 3EB song in general just with different instruments). Course for all I know the influence could go the other way... The song grows on me as I listen to it, getting bigger as it goes along. I enjoyed it but probably won't seek out more specifically by them, though I'd be happy to listen to more of them that's pointed out to me. 7/10

Madcon - Outrun the Sun feat. Maad*Moiselle
Nice sounding club/pop music. Not terribly deep or unique, but it has a good beat, good music, and good singers/rappers. It has a good sound and keeps my attention. Sticks with mostly real-sounding voices instead of going overboard with distortion like, say, the Black Eyed Peas. I don't know Madcon or Maad*Moiselle specifically, so I don't know if they're an older group or getting started, but I could see them being included in a club rotation today. Sure it's nothing outstanding, but it's fun to listen to which makes up for a lot. 7/10

Joe McElderry - Superman
Ahh, I know this song. Well, not this version specifically, I know the Five For Fighting version, and this guy Joe McElderry's doing a cover. Does a pretty good job of it too - he does a mostly straight cover, but also puts his own touch on it. I've always liked this song, and whereas Five For Fighting have something of a raw, rough sound, this guy's doing a more polished, stylish version with more swelling instruments and a nicer, if somewhat less powerful, voice. Both approaches work just fine; McElderry's got a nice voice, and when I'm not comparing him with the original in my head I can appreciate what he brings to the song. The idea of a powerful but lonely figure like Superman taking time for himself is a good one. Solid cover, lets call this 8/10. Though everybody knows Axis of Awesome's version is the best. ;-)

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - "Wild World"

This is one of those bands that gives me flashbacks to when I was just starting high school, as I had a friend who was really into punk at the time. I remember liking this band for their rather unique takes on classic songs, and a punk cover of a Cat Stevens song definitely qualifies. It's something I definitely appreciate a lot more now than I think I did at the time, as it's a lot of fun, so 9/10.

Van Morrison - "Brown-Eyed Girl"

Hm. This song sounds vaguely familiar. Was it used in a movie or something?

Seriously, it's a classic, and it's still a great song, but I think I'm a little over it by now. It's one of those songs that has the bad luck of being suitable for classic rock, oldies, and easy listening radio stations, so it can be hard to avoid at times. So marks off for having heard it too much. 7/10

Franz Ferdinand - "Take Me Out"

A song that gives me flashbacks to when I was just finishing high school. You did this deliberately, didn't you? :p It's tough to say too much about this song, but it's definitely still fun. I can't help but groove along and sing to the choruses. 8/10

"Hasn't Hit Me Yet", Blue Rodeo: I'm enjoying the sound: it has a wistful, nostalgic feeling to it. There's a lot of interesting instrumental interplay around the two-minute mark. It reminds me -- bizarrely -- of country-western music at one point, specifically starting three minutes in. That adds to the wistfulness, which is a little difficult for considering that a bunch of my friends graduated from our mutual alma mater yesterday, and so there's less and less to tie me to the university I loved so much. Everyone's moving on.. 9/10.

"The Pass", Rush. Rush is one of those bands I've heard of, but never heard. The opening has this...desolate feeling to it, as if I'm driving through a part of town that's been largely abandoned. (Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" has the same effect.) The vocals are a bit more subdued than I'd like, but this forces me to pay more attention. As I listen, though, I hear a good message -- that everyone goes through difficulties, but that there's nothing to be gained in giving up or surrendering...that we must continue to strive. (8/10)

"Ordinary Day", Great Blue Sea. Not a band I've heard of, but that is the merit of this kind of thread. :) Very interesting start; the beeping makes me think of Morse code, sounding out distress. Good message about mental resilience, taking things in stride. Good driving pace. This is a song I can see myself coming back to listen to again and again. (10/10)

It's actually fairly slow paced for a Wombats song- most are much more lively.. Such as "Jump Into The Fog", IMO they're both great, even though they're totally different.

Elis Paul - "The World Ain't Slowing Down"
Not usually my type, but it sounds like he's got a nice voice. It's kind of relaxing, and I like the way it just goes round in circles without repeating itself. - 7/10

First Aid Kit - You're Not Coming Home Tonight
Love the harmony! They both have really nice clear voices. Although again, not usually my kind of music, I could learn to like this if I listened to it a few more times. 8/10

Duke Ellington & Org. - Harlem Nocturne
While this is great in it's own way, I'm really not into Jazz, or much purely instrumental music, and it sends alarm bells ringing "50's!!!". Sorry, this is only my assesment, but I don't see myself getting into this. 4/10

It's not shocking you got a country vibe out of it. Blue Rodeo are known for straddling the line between country and rock. It's a very classic sort of country sound, though, which I've always appreciated.

Good call. It is, in fact, "SOS" being repeated in Morse code. :)

@JayTrek: "Harlem Nocturne" always brings to mind a picture of a huge '40s car roaring through a rainy New York city street, driven by a film noire detective.

The author of "The World Ain't Slowin' Down" is Ellis Paul, by the way. :) Not sure if the video mentions that or not..

^Oops.. Sorry, the video title wasn't very clear. I did think it was a rather strange name though .

"If You Ever Come Back", the Script : I'm liking the interplay of mellow rock and a rapid, hip-hop like recitation of lyrics. The background strings are especially sweet, which is appropriate for a song about picking up where things left off when someone in a romantic relationship changes her mind and returns. (8/10)

"Alligator Sky", Owl City: I have no idea what this song is about, but it's definitely an interesting mix of genres. The rap/hip-hop genre is one I am only just beginning to explore, though I'm mostly concentrating on the stuff with a political point. I looked up this song's lyrics after listening to it twice to see if I could get a better handle on what it was saying. Tenantive guess: something has ended between two people, but one perceives it as freedom or the chance for an energetic new beginning. I'm not sure, though. It's an energetic song, but I don't quite get the meaning. 6/10

"Kryptonite", Three Doors Down. This is another band I've heard OF, but never heard. A friend of mine was obsessive about them in high school, though. Actually, as I get further into the song, I'm realizing that I HAVE heard this song: I just didn't know the name. I like the sound: my music tastes have softened in recent years, but I still enjoy music with a..harder tint to it like this. I'm not quite sure what it's about, but it's definitely enjoyable to listen to, especially while driving. 7/10

Susan Tedeschi - "Hurt So Bad"

The sound isn't great on this video, so it's hard to get a proper read on this. I like blues if it's done well, and perhaps if you know the song this could be quite good, but honestly it just sounds too muddled, and I can't really appreciate it. 5/10

Billy Bragg - "The Saturday Boy"

I've heard of Billy Bragg, but I can't say I've ever listened to much of his stuff. It's interesting how strongly his accent comes across in this song, I have to say, first of all. Overall, it's a nice little stripped-down number, and it's pretty pleasant to listen to. I also quite liked the horn solo during the bridge, and then again in the outro. 8/10

Sara Bareilles - "King of Anything"

Catchy female piano-pop. It has to be pretty terrible for me to dislike music in this style, so that's an automatic point in this song's favour. ;) It's a pretty nice song, too... she has a good voice, and as I said, it's quite catchy. I could definitely see myself listening to more of her stuff. 9/10

"War of the Worlds" - Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.

First of all, points off for the annoying band name punctuation. :p

 Yeah, I like the name, but I don't think anyone else does. The punctuation is a downside of it.

"World Spins Madly On" - The Weepies

This is a quality acoustic ballad. First I've heard of this band, and probably not the best song to be introduced with, but I like it all the same.
Oh? I'm not sure what you mean by it not being the best song to be introduced with. This is actually by far their most popular song, and they tend to stick to mellow acoustic stuff, with the female and male singers trading off lead vocals. I'd recommend pretty much any of their three albums, they're all very listenable, though not terribly distinct from one another.

Onto Smellincoffee's selection!

Susan Tedeschi - Hurts So Bad

This is a fantastic, swingy tune. Very old school. Nice vocals too. It's something I feel like I've heard many times before, maybe on the Back to the Future soundtrack, but I don't think I've actually heard this specific song. That's not a knock against the song, it's like a good home cooked meal. 9/10

Billy Bragg - The Saturday Boy

Also very fun song, though more singer-songwriter than the last. I like it that it tells a story and how stripped down it is. I also like the trumpet instrumental breaks, makes things more interesting musically. I don't think it caught me as much as the first song, though I suspect that's a mood/context thing more than anything. 7/10

Sara Bareilles - King of Anything

A solid piano-pop song. This sound like a radio-friendly song that you would not necessarily ever hear on the radio. Just wait, now someone will tell me this gets played all the time...don't really listen to much radio anymore. :p Anyways, perfect background music for a summer afternoon. It's pop, to be sure, but good pop. And with a little research, turns out I have heard her before with the song "Love Song." Thought the name looked familiar. 7/10

ETA: CanadaDave's picks, cause I'm slow.:

Guster - Satellite

This song reminds me a little bit of One Headlight by the Wallflowers for some reason. I like that song. I like this one too. This is exactly the sort of style I spent most of my late teens/early twenties listening to...and I suppose I still do. Wouldn't mind hearing more from them. 7/10

Rheostatics - Claire

Another mellow rock song and coming off the last one I think it suffers a bit just because it's similar tempo and style. However, it's not a bad song, sounds like something out of the 70's to me. Also, I appreciate you bringing more awareness to Canadian music to this thread, no matter the style. So many unappreciated bands that should be shared with the world. 6/10

William Shatner - Common People

You're just being mean now. Shatner is the man, though. He should cover that Sunscreen Song that was popular a decade ago. It would be right up his alley. 10,000,000/10

1. Eisley "Better Love"

Haven't heard before. Nice vocals...song is ok. I have a hard time to label certain things but female vocals and lighter alt rock music. B-Good.

2. Cake "Mahna Mahna"

Haven't heard before...but have heard the band before. Not a fan. This wasn't too bad...some strange sounds going on here. C-Average/Ok.

3. Josh Ritter "To the Dogs or Whoever"

Glad you liked it. Also, trivial fact, the band name does indeed come from Mos Eisley. Not really apropos to anything, it's just sort of fun and random.
