It's never even occurred to me to answer someone else's phone. When someone calls me, they're looking to talk specifically to me. When someone calls one of my colleagues, they're looking to talk specifically to them. We each have entirely different roles and expertise-it's not as if I could help someone trying to get in touch with our statistician and vice versa.
Of course, we're a policy research center and don't deal with customers and whatnot, so 99 times out of 100 it frankly doesn't matter whether a random phone call gets picked up or not. They can just email, which comprises almost all of our outside communication anyway-I probably get 3 phone calls a month from people outside our group and hate it when I do. Shit, none of us come to the office every day anyway, and when we are in the office, we're often in other peoples' offices (yes, we each have our own with a door that actually closes and a window that actually opens
).
